View Full Version : MOD Challenge - TOW or SCUTTLE

I am late in the war, doing brilliantly, but bit off a bit more than I can chew. Found myself in the Celebes Sea with a broken starboard prop shaft. Repaired port side but sub is unsteerable. Otherwise my crew did an excellent job against 4 destroyers and a sub chaser and managed to sink 6 ships in a convoy of 10. I save often but that's the easy way out.
So here is my MOD Challenge: Arrange for a tow to nearest base for drydock repair or an Abandon Ship MOD with some sort of court-martial scenario (to make it fair... "as ye sow, so shall ye reap" lol)
I know it is easier to just play over but I think it would be interesting to have an option to tow or scuttle/rescue/court-martial.
If no one is interested can someone point me in a direction that I could try and develop myself???
Thanks
Jack

The problem would be solved if we could just recreate the 'Teleport Home' function of SH3.

Only sail where you see this logo.

I don't think it's possible, basically. This part of the game is completely hard-coded. The only thing that COULD be done to simulate it is something like what we had in SH4 commander, where you could change the status to "surrendered" instead of "sunk" when your career was lost.
Alternatively, damage mods should prevent these types of parts from being destructable. But that still might leave you without enough fuel to reach base... So another option is some kind of savegame editing.

it would be nice to give you a tow option though...

Provided that the tow option wasn't available ten nautical miles from downtown Osaka. (Unless it was the IJN towing home a prize) That would be somewhat gamey too. ;)

I figured it went without saying that if you are in the Japs backyard you wouldn't get a tow. But a scuttle/rescue seems appropriate. Actually, this late in the war there are temp tender bases nearby as well as Allied controlled waters/bases so I wouldn't think it out of the relm of possibility. No worries... Thanks to all for the comments.
Keep your save game, give us time. SH3's been out 3 years. hehe, who knows what we'll have when SH4 has been out that long. :D
Seriously, I like the sound of this . . .hmmm . . .
How about this as an idea. The "mod" for this could be, an outside program that randomly determines what happens, whether your get towed home, rescued by an allied ship, or captured by the Japanese. This program would then edit the save game you pointed it at to either "kill you" if you were captured, retire you if you were court marshalled (dramatic failure), or relocate your vessel within 25 miles of the nearest port (or your home base, if that was all that could be read from the save file). We've got some tallented programers in this group. I think we could pull this off. At least after seeing some of the programs they've written, like SH3 Commander, and the SH4 Menu Maker.
So who's up for it?

I thought about something along those exact lines. I think with some ingenuity you could actually do it internally. I was wondering if you could point me too or tell me more about the menu mod for SH4. What's it about--just eye candy? Also, how hard is it to mod SH4? There are some ideas I have. Thanks.
Best

Wouldn't a modification of the 1.5 Strategic Abilities to call a Submarine Tender work?

This has been looked at over and over. There is no recourse other that starting a save or starting a new game. The sub tender only give fuels and torps. No repair as far as I remember.

Isn't 1.5 the expansion pack? I don't have that yet if it is. Since I don't have that I am not familiar with its upgrades/addons. Thanks

1.5 (The Expansion) has a feature that allows you to call patrolling Ships/Task Forces/Scout Planes to assist you in a certain radius of their Patrol zone, I was wondering if it was possible to mod it so you could a Submarine Tender to assist you (I can't really remember if those only rearm/refuel you or also repair you...)

Ok, but would an outside program that rewrites parts of the save file be feasable or possible?
Menu Maker is found here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=131625
Wonderfull tool for anyone who plays SH4

Like I said, it has been looked into quite a bit without any viable results. I do not know what to tell you. I think as far back as SH3 it was looked at.
