Okay...I have had SH4 now for almost a year and believe it or not have never played it! What I have done is let it season...patches have come and now the add-on is here, so hopefully the bun is now out of the oven.

My question is this. Is there a mod pack (or set of mods) that will give me the following?

I want the sim to be as fixed as possible with graphics and function mods that enhance the stock version but without the super realism stuff such as manual targeting only, limited info on the tactical map, and sea traffic reduced to the point you feel great when you find and sink a fishing boat.

That's it. I know many here love the above but that's not what I bought it for. On the other hand, I don't want it to be a shooting gallery either...something in between would be nice. It seems like the super mods all have the features I don't care for built in. The mods should be scaleable I would think, so everyone can benefit...not just the extreme realism fans.

Thanks

I've been browsing the mods list and reading what they do and such. Hard to make sense of what I can use to achieve my goal. Everything is in such a flux with all the versions for the various SH4 patches. Many of the individual mods do not indicate if they are compatible with the later patches. The super mods don't always explain what mini-mods they incorporate or duplicate. The threads seem to be all focused on current issues as if the earlier issues are now history. Nothing is very explicit and many of the modders appear to be burning out. Wasn't like this with SH3...not sure why.

Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me.

To all the modders out there, I appreciate your work whether it's something I would use or not.

Thanks anyway.

If you don't want ultra-realism, the best one stop shop is Trigger Maru Overhauled with the Run Silent Run Deep campaign.

The environmental mods are seperate for a good reason and you have a choice of 2. The first is ROW / Pacific Environment mod that Kriller2 has taken over, and the other is W_Clear's Pacific mod. Which one to use depends on your system specs and personal taste.

You can also take an in between route by using the stock version, one of the environmental mods, and Run Silent Run Deep for stock. Or go to the ubisoft forum and download Trigger Maru Overhauled With Training Wheels and run RSRD with it

Ducimus has done an incredible job with TMO, and lurker's RSRD campaign is fantastic.

Thanks for your suggestions. I thought TM was an ultra-realism mod from reading the FAQ. A lot of the questions there are about turning things off. I will definitely check it out now. RSRD also has my attention. I realize any of these mods will be a work in progress.

The Trigger Maru Overhaul with training wheels turned a lot of those things back on.

I can add my recommendation for TMO/RSRD. Just spent a glorious cruise in The Slot during the Guadacanal/Coral Sea battles.

Intercepting the intial cargo-ship resupply sorties (still moving at 20+ knots!), Battlecruiser sorties (scratch one IJN BC and a Chitose seaplane carrier), the impossibly intimidating destroyer resupply sorties (think 15 destroyers doing 28kts in line-astern) and finally I caught a BB group trying to recover to Truk (added a Kongo and escort DD).

All the while this was going on I was getting flash traffic messages that meshed with what I was encountering. Unfortunately it all occurred during massive swells which made periscope ops bloody challenging...
