Nisgeis apparently used the photos I provided and was able to create this photo realistic skin. Even down to the dent she sports on the bow. We have a new modder here fellas:rock: IT ROCKS! Now some paint on the sail or maybe she looks cool just like this!

:yep: a great skin! Now we need a photo realistc looking skin for standard boats..

Shouldn't the bridge be light gray like the sides of the hull? A black superstructure would be easy to spot on the horizon.
Other than that, I really like the skin and the realistic metal look.

Work in progress! Nesgies put in over 10 hours on this alone. I PM'd him on getting the sail gray as well and the dive plans as they look a bit blue.
As a side note, he did use the photo and was able to get the photo realisitic look. Look closely at the bow and see the weld lines. Also the dent she has in the bow. See the indentation on the metal skin from pressure of the water and normal wear. Very cool way to make as skin really. If Nesgies is up to it, perhaps some other colored photos of subs could be used.
I think once he has the basic skin without the painted mouth he could probably start replicating it to other boats.

I woud like to download it just as a generic skin without anything extra added to the bow or bridge. I definitely noticed the weld lines and dents.

I will get with Nisgies to see if he can make the basic template

Wow, that is a beauty. Great job on the lighting and metal textures. Can we get this guy to redo the S-Class, P-Class and so forth?
I imagine he could do a hell of a job on the early Measure #9 boats! Particulary the Sugar boats.

Yes and he did a great job. Check this out....see the weld lines and dent? Now look at his photo realistic creation off this pic: http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/IMG_02031.jpg
It is dead on and includes the draft numbers on the side. Very cool way to skin a boat. Compare the two, real pic here and creation on first post!

Hello everyone thanks for the comments, I will be working on this some more, once I have finished working out which bits of the texture are mapped to which part of the model. There is probably a really easy way to do this, but I'm doing it the way I know how, so it will take me a while, almost done though. After that I'll see about a conning tower. The drainage holes in the side are not right and I will fix this eventually. I wanted to get the hull to AVGWarhawk fairly quickly, so I did not have time to change all the particle generators for the Balao, so I added the stock Balao skin's drainage holes so it would look right in the interim.
I have first to work on a skin for the Balao class boats by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Compnay in Wisconsin for a project I am working on. After I have done that I will return to this.

Hello Gimpy, I haven't used photoshop for years (although it was extrememly powerful even back then), coincidentally enough, I downloaded a copy of GIMP, as it's free and then worked out how to use it whilst doing this skin. Yesterday, I figured out how to use layers - hurrah!
I have absolutely no artistic ability at all, but I'm OK with editting software.

My thoughts aswell.....
Why are some of the shadows from the ropes missing?..

Because there aren't any ropes?

The rope shadows need to be gone and one heck of a job also! The ropes are not part of the skin. Nesgeis has done great work here and I'm very impressed. I can not wait for the finished product and if Nesgeis feels froggy enough, perhaps he can do some other boats:D It is does look realistic to me down to the welds. Currently the stock skins show rivets on the boats. These boats were welded steel, sheet by sheet.
I was sailing last night in the new skin. She looks mean and nasty when surfacing:up:

I would like to know if it's not to much trouble, how you're figuring out which parts of the skin are mapped onto the model and if there is an easy way of doing it?
Keep up the good work Nisgeis, it's very impressive.

Well, it would look a bit silly out in the middle of the Pacific with shadows of mooring ropes that are attached to a non-existent pier. :hmm:
I jest. It just jumped into my mind when I saw the posts :D

If you mean without nose art, then yes, I'll be doing a clean skin. It probably won't look like this skin though. I'll see what happens, but personally i think the bow on this particular skin is the soul of the boat.
I didn't like this particular shark mouth at first, but after a few hours it grew on me and now I think it looks great.

I would guess Nisgeis would have it for download for all. I'm sure it would find it's way into games of others beside mine:up: A lot of the guys who work on the Torsk with me hate the mouth. It was not original in any theater she served. The city of Baltimore had it painted on to attrack more visitors. It does work so they put up with it. Personally I think it is cool and love it in the game.

I know you were jesting but I was perplexed myself when that question was asked. Perhaps the poster of the question did not have enough coffee in him yet.
Any news on making this skin available? It looks great!

Nesgeis needed some more photos of the Torsk to use with this skin. Today after scraping paint and assort gunk off the differential temperture panel, I went topside and took some shots down the starboard side. Nesgeis needed more photos as he was limited to what he had to run down the flanks and a pattern started to emerge. The pics from today will help break up the pattern.
Todays shots Nesgeis is working with:

Poor old boat, looks like she's been battered about a bit.
Wonder how long it would take for a mechanic to pull out all those dents :rotfl:

No time at all with photoshop.
Nisgeis got talent, that is for sure. Can't wait for this skin. Any historical photos of her back during WWII? Usually with modern day pictures, they paint the sub differently than what it looked like during it's heyday.
