View Full Version : Moderator bio
I think it may help a few people if we had a bio on some of the moderators especially in this forum. Is Takeda Shingen our moderator really a Japanese man of over 400 years of age? I would like to know more of the man behind the mask so that I can evaluate his moderating decisions.Sometimes he does not always walk the middle road and he has a strong Victorian idea of what is prurient.
My initial impressio is that he is also very pro-German and anti-British.

I disagree.I think a little biographical information is usefull especially for new joiners.
Why?
So they can judge the moderators?
What kind of criteria do you think they should be judged upon?
Nationality? Age? Education?
I am happy just to judge them on their actions as moderators.
If I was a moderator, which incidentally I believe is the kiss of death on this part of the forum,I would have a sticky with my biographical details and a short note covering my ethos. This would allow new visitors to see something of me and my position as moderator.I would try to be impartial at all times and maintain a detachment over all the issues that are raised.I would not have a personal opinion.I would offer encouragement to those that are being unfairly flamed and douse the heat of those that try to do this.

Why? how would that help anyone? What would it achieve?
Curiosity is not a good enough reason.

Who are you??A new person would be asking the same of the moderators in any part of this forum!!What I am suggesting is merely a polite introduction.Something that gentlemen do when they first meet.

Seems kind of silly to me. Moderators need to be able to do their job without question, kind of like military officers giving orders...or forum discipline is nonexistant. As was said before, this isn't a democracy. Understanding why the mods locked/edited your thread just isn't part of the process.

A silly idea. Moderators are beings at the edge of things, to stop us falling off.
Also, there's a certain amount of private data that you have to hand over to SUBSIM at the beginning, namely an email address. That should be it.

:)...
Well i got asked on a kiwi site to be a moderator i kinda freaked out as i was not expecting it at all, they wanted a moderator that wasn't into wild debates and arguments - besides whats the point l always come out the loser in arguments anyways :)
Anyways abit worried about moderatoring a site with 40,000+ members but only a few hundred using the forums i thought the best place to get some good advice and tips was from the subsim moderators so thats what i did. I PM one and this is the wise words i got:yep:
KP might like to read it too.
First, let me officially welcome you to the global brotherhood of moderators. The paddling will come later. :p I had a real advantage when I started on <snip> because I had moderated for Neal on several different forums over the past few years. I knew what he liked and how he wanted his boards moderated. That should be the first thing. Either observe the webmaster in action, or ask him what how he wants things approached. Moderation is like being between two parties: The Webmaster and the members. You have to keep both satisfied while maintaining order. It is a tricky tightrope. You won't always be able to keep the members happy, but you must always keep the Webmaster on your side, as all of your authority will, ultimately, stem from him. As it relates to SubSim, I am powerless without Neal, just as you will be without your webmaster.
With the members, you have to let them get to know your style. One of the biggest problems that I have is that I had when I took over <snip> was that I approached it as though they already knew me as a moderator. This was a mistake. Everything changes when you get that little asterix next to your name. Your friends will drift away, and you will be regarded as the cop; an outsider and one not to be trusted. I did the worst possible thing: To go in there like gangbusters on my first big flare-up, and I got egg all over my face. I toned down the rhetoric and got much better results. Once they get used to you, you'll only have to post the occassional 'Hey knock it off', and the members will respond. Really, I only lock threads as a last resort.
Moderators on SubSim do not have the direct power of suspension. I can enforce a 24-hour ban, but that is it. All of our brig time and bans must be appealed through Neal. I prefer this system, but if you have the power to ban, be sure to use it only as a last, last resort, and have a clear and systematic system of warnings in place to cover yourself. No issue is more contentious.
Finally, be aware that moderation is a lonely job. As I said before, you will be stuck in the no-man's-land between the webmaster and the members. You will lose a lot of friends, and you will not be able to participate in the discussions like you used to. You have to really like the website to do the job. Otherwise, you will start to wonder what you are doing there in the first place.

I think it would work the other way around. People would look at their bio and explain the mod's actions by it, claiming unfairness and imbalance towards members with different bios.

Yep, every board needs moderation, and no one likes to be told to ease up. The moderators here and me try to use a light touch, acting only when necessary, as best we can judge. We're not perfect and we cannot make everyone happy all the time, but with the cooperation of the members here, we've earned a solid reputation as a good, civil, and fun community.
As for moderators listing their "biographical information", I think everyone should use their real names and list their true background. :ping: What have they got to hide? I'm always amused at some people who worry their real name will get publicized  So, what?

This is not necessary, the forum is not a democracy or a public service.

The subsim Moderators are by far the best out there in my view. I was honored to take the role when offered to me by Neal, and I've just had to step down due to real life getting in the way.....for now anyway.
Neal selects the Moderators. This is his house. The criteria he uses is based on his sense of what's needed in a Forum in order to keep it a place where all can flourish and take part in useful and sometimes spirited discussion.
Sometimes, a member may feel that a Moderator is not being fair to them in some way. On those occasions, if you take a time out and then look at the issue in its entirety in the cold light of day, you'll see that the Moderator wasn't as unfair as you thought he was.
There's a fine line between spirited discussion and a thread getting out of control and off topic. The Moderators walk that line every day. If you want to see how good the subsim moderators are, check out some other Forums. :D
And now we bring you more of the same, over to the next poster.

That is one of the highest compliments that I have ever been paid. I thank you.
You can read my bio in my profile and in the bio thread. Also, Kiwi did not want to say so as per ettiquite, which I appreciate, but I will reveal that the quoted text is mine.
More effective than moderator bios would be member bios. After all, new members will spend more time interacting with the general membership than they will the moderators. Thus, the individual could get the name of that guy that flamed them, look up the bio, and decide for themselves whether or not to respond based on personal preference and ideology. It would lighten my work load. :p Of course, then we would have nothing buy 100 pages of member bios, and room for no discussion. Maybe not such a great idea after all.

Anglo-Saxons?!
The Anglo-Saxon traditions ended a few hundred years after the Norman invasion of
1066 and the Anglo-Saxon gene pool is indistinct in England and makes up only a tiny
proportion of the country, the mainly Anglo Saxons areas in 1066 and before being
confined mainly to the South and East of England and acounting for a fraction of the total population.
If it is true that the admins don't like Anglo-Saxons, I demand to know if they also
dislike Jutes, Bemicians, Britons, Celts, Surreymen and all other past peoples.
Anyway, didn't you say they where Pro-German?

My thinking is that if you are a member of Subsim you have agreed to the terms and conditions of this site.
So for me I think its a case that each and everyone of us are moderators, if you see something happening that you believe to be against what this community stands for then you should inform the person/s responsible of their obligation to withdraw comments, pictures or gestures that are against Subsims terms.
If you have no joy then you simply move it up the chain of command - official moderator who has the ability to close posts/threads, keel haul, or in extreme cases ban.
But for me they are a good source of help and information and I have used them on many occasions to help with my account/faults with posting etc.
I think they should remain silent and let their actions do the talking.

well yes, the Scots still exsist as a distinct genetic group, but that is distinct from the Scottish, like Brown, who may or may not also be a Scot.

I agree we should be more helpful to the mods and I think in many ways we are ...
We should also be kind to the newbies, before Sailor Steve gets hold of them on their spelling and grammer ... just kidding.
The Navy had a way of taking care of the weaker sailors, especially on submarines, just make fun of them till they change.
But that was in person, not a message board where people are even more easily offended ...
Lets try not to cause a grudge that sticks in people's backs till they explode ... I've seen that happen before.
One guy on the USS Ethan Allen had a girlfriends picture on the wall of his bunk, like many sailors do ...
He use to brag about her and talk about her even though she was not that attractive.
One of the sonarman had to wake this guy up for his watch and noticed the picture of the girl he had always been bragging about.
The sonar tech gently lifts the picture and frames it with a toilet seat that he found in the supply cache between the missile tubes.
He then hangs the picture in sonar and waits for the poor unsuspecting sailor to come through the door.
SSBN's had their own sonar room in those days ...
The guy comes in see's the picture and explodes ... real anger too.
The two sonar tech's got seperated and never made another patrol together again.
You got to learn how to handle yourself, roll with the punches ... what better place than a submarine or a subsim forum to do it in?
A foxhole would be too late with the other man having a weapon too ... that would be scary.

You know, none of the Moderators want to intervene in any thread. To a large degree, subsim moderates itself. The vast majority of the members here are here for the right reasons and they engage in positive, constructive dialogue......a few have personal agendas. Personal agendas usually lead to personal attacks, and that's the point where a Moderator will step in.

The vast majority of the members here are here for the right reasons and they engage in positive, constructive dialogue......a few have personal agendas. Personal agendas usually lead to personal attacks, and that's the point where a Moderator will step in.
And what book did that quote come from?
The one on the shelf called "STEED needs to be a good boy and take these things to heart"
(its a bit dusty)

Precisely....not even John erm...Marion Wayne used his real name :p
You mean Marion Michael Morrison? And what about Archie Leach? Ramon Estevez? How about that famous British actress Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg?
My real name is well hidden and will never be revealed...except to anyone who reads the 'How Did You Find Subsim' thread.:rotfl:
