[WIP] USS Baya SS 318 Skin

This is my first attempt at posting embedded images to a forum, so this may go wrong... Edit: It did go wrong, I wonder if this will work...

This is my first attempt at doing any modding, but here's what I'm at so far.

I have some things to sort out before it's ready, like the drain hole details on the Baya is more like a Porpoise class that the stock Balao class holes.

Oh yes and the water does come out of the drain holes, looks like it's coming from between the teeth, but fraps didn't save it. (Boooo!)

The Torsk was not painted like this during the war but I would like to have it in my game like this.

Can you send me a picture of it side on? It would be nice to work from a colour picture, instead of black and white and guessing at colours.

The Torsk is a real beauty!

This mod is pretty nifty. I have the .dds plugin for Photoshop and I can open them up, I just have to learn what I'm doing. :)

Yes, in 1986 she got a full coat of black. She now sports the 1960's colors of gray and black. The teeth were not original. The city of Baltimore though it would be cool and attract more visitors if the mouth and eyes were added. It is pretty cool and yes, the people get attracted to the long sleek shark hanging outside the aquarium.

I'm not trying to be a critic but I think you make the whole boats paint scheme black to give the boat fierceness.

That's a great suggestion. I'll try that and see how it looks, as an additional. The original art looked like this, which is what I've based it on:

There are multiple version of it, with each one being slightly different. I tried to maintain the imperfections in it (the mouth isn't a smooth curve for example). Some versions show there being a little hump behind the tail, which makes it look more like a shark jumping out of the water, in a Jaws way. Original paint scheme was grey on the hull, with black saddle tanks. I got the pictures from the website www.ussbaya.com (http://www.ussbaya.com), which is a very nice site for this sub and well work a visit. It also has abridged war patrols, which are quite hard to find. It has the following story from Commander Ben Jarvis:

I was away from the boat for the day and the crew gave a guy a bottle of 3 Feathers rotgut to paint the snark on the front of the BAYA. The guy got so drunk he ended up falling off the stageing three times. I came back, liked what they had done and said "let's go."


I'm new to skinning, so I'll keep going and see what comes of it. Now I need to find out how to get JGME to work.

And AVGWarhawk, I'll work on the Torsk's skin.
