Wouldn't it be more realistic to 'unlock' some of the upgrades before a career began depending on the start date?

Of course it is. The limits of the game to reward someone for his achievements is limited, so the developers chose to use the "renown" system. In real life, promotions weren't enough, and metals were hard to come by.
I suspect, the new subs were fitted with the latest and best equipment, so those older (and successful) subs were probably the last to get the goodies.
My solution the the renown problem is to edit the renown requirements for new equipment in the config file to zero, so I can get anything I want, whenever I want it.
I feel the renown system is like getting stars in kindergarten.

I change the reknown rewarded for naval academy in the config file from 500 to 200,000. That solves any purchasing problems when starting the war late. :)

edit renown for GWX 2.0? umm, not much upgrades early years to spend on. I earn more renown in GWX 2.0 than I ever did in stock. Right now I have around 70,000 renown and I am in October 1941. When 1945 comes up, I would probably be able to afford a several XXIs, but too bad I can only have 1.

back to topic:
Removing the renown system comnpletely is not good imho... there is this little bug or whatever where you can get as many torps of any type you want... now imagine a type VIIc loaded fully with T-Vs ....
I would say go down with the cost for some upgrades etc... but real high for the "not so common" ones...
Or maybe restrict Torps by number? Well after all it is the Players choice I would say...

Individual choice of the player I suppose....spme prefer realism, spme not http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
