SH4- U-boat Missions Speech FIX v1.0
Introduction:
This mod is used to replace American voices from the original stock sh4 and replace them
with crew voices taken from Silent hunter 3 so you will have true German speaking crew
with the new U-Boat expansion.
Installation:
Use winrar to extract the folder "Spaxs SH4 Uboat SPEACH FIX" to your MODS folder.
This mod is designed to function with the JSGME Mod manger. So just enable it and you should be good to go.
After Thoughts:
I may be release some sound effects from sh3 such as crash drive
and surface the boat in a later release.
Thank you and enjoy,
Spaxspore

Thanks, Spax. I used to use several sound files recorded from the Das Boot sound track CD for things like crash dive in SH3. I never got tired of hearing "Alarm! Fluten!" with the bell ringing in the background.

Are these voices taken from a stock SH3, or from - for example - a GWX-install?
Spaxspore

stock sh3, as far as i know, i jsut grabbed them real fast from a backup install of sh3 on one of my Terabyte hard drives

Great job m8. When you dive do you get the US whistle or German ALAAAAAAAAAAAAARM? That's what annoys me more then language

yea i noticed that, after i posted the mod (havnt had a chance to play to much) not sure where the game is grabin the other lang files at since i took out all the english files from the speech directory

The other files are probably sound effect files with the speech added into them. You should be able to replace the dive horn with the alarm bell and Germans shouting orders in the background.

....and suppose you want to sail in a US-sub again (or continue your old USN career), you need to disable this mod, I guess?
Just got a confirmation, that the expansion will be in the mail tomorrow.

Yeah. I'm guessing that you will need to disable it for US missions.

Strange, last modified 22-Mar-2007 ???
This is new patch? I'm confused :o
So, with this patch I have different folders for US and German voices ?
Can I play US and German campaign with proper voices ?
Too many questions, sorry, I'm tired today, too much work :yep:

Sorry, but these are not all the stock German language files from SH3 (e.g., "torpedo in the water" is still in english), and some of them have been modded from the original (such as the "new message received" one).
Now, with that said, does anyone have the complete set of stock, original, unaltered set of German voice files from SH3?

Just bought the addon CD, but not installed it yet. What an oversight to use US voices, as if using several voicepacks in a sim is new ground. IL2 has had different speechpacks for the various nations for years! Hope that if/when an IJN/RN/RNethN addon appears, they will include Japanese/British/Dutch speechpacks, or at the very least the possibility to add a community-made speechpack where required.
Downloading Spax's speechpack now............... will use this with JSGME.

On second thought, I will copy the GWX 2.0 speechpack.......................
Thanks is very good! But all is translated not :hmm:

Tested three German speechpacks using JSGME: The Spax pack, the original UBI SH4 pack and the GWX 2.0 speechpack. While all three are great improvements, none is fault-free. I get "Torpedo in the water" and "Torpedo impact" rather than "Aal inst im Wasser" and "Torpedotreffer" for instance.
The GWX 2.0 speechpack is the best bet in my opinion as it has "ALAAAAAARM!", alarm bells etc. when crashdiving.

I deleted the original SH4 speech folder and replaced it with the spaxs speech folder (which is simply the SH3 speech folder) and then added the GWX2 speech to it.
Next I deleted:
Submarine_GQ_secure_battle_stations_INT.wav
Submarine_passing_thermal_layer_INT.wav
Submarine_relieve_watch_INT.wav
from the main sound folder
(C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Sound)
Result= no more American voices at all in your U-boat campaign
downside is that the voices are German in your US campaign aswell, but since the add-on I only play U-boat so that's fine by me;)

A thought just occurred to me: what if I put both US and GWX 2.0 speechpacks into JSGME with an empty speech folder in the "Sound" folder (though this might not even be necessary), and use JSGME to switch as required??????????
Will test and post results if any.

Not quite.......... the US "Torpedo in the water" and "Torpedo impact" have disappeared but replaced by total silence. Will try again with the German SH4 speechpack- the GWX pack is apparently not completely compatible with SH4.

I 've found what's wong with the sounds in "Spaxs Speech Fix". It seems that the torpedo announcements in a US Submarine are performed by a different officer than in German U-boat. That means that the names of the german files are not the same with names of the English ones and so the sounds like "Torpedo Impact" "Firing Tube One" allthough there are in the speech pack are not working. I am in the proccess of making a small fix that hopefully will do the trick.
Nevertheless I am frustrated that the german voices weren't included in the add-on. And I am pretty sure that that's happened because the whole thing would be more than one cd....which means additional costs for Ubi ...
- Edit - Does anyone know if the german install of SH4 have the complete set of voices in german? It would be much easier to take the sounds from there....but I don't want to uninstall-reinstall just to see that the sounds are not completely ok in the german install as well

Hello, today I try, install sh4 stock in German and then I install patch "silent hunter the 4 german voices" and I copy the folder speech, later on I remove of new the game and I still install it in English with the addon in order then to replace the saved folder speech ;)

Well I managed to make the following sounds (which didn't work with "Spax's patch" )work in German:
Torpedo in the water
Torpedo Impact
Torpedo is a dud
Torpedo Missed Sir
Firing Tube 1.....to Tube 6.
I suspect that more sounds will be revealed to be in English but those are very common..
Just enable this little mod on top of "Spax's" and it should work.

If you don't want to take any chances that in the middle of a battle you will hear an out of place English voice you should delete ".../Silent Hunter 4/Data/Sound/Speech" folder (backup first) and then install those two mods. Off course if a sound was in English, this way you should not hear it at all.

At this moment the only way I can think of doing that is doing a multiple install...One with German voices and one with English. There is a little utility for that called MultiSH. You can find it in the forum. Or alterntively tou can enable/disable the German voices any time you want to play with fleetboat/u-boat respectively. Not the best way but....

At the moment, it seems to me that the best way to get both US and German voices working in one install is by using JSGME to activate (in my case) the GWX 2.0 speechpack and the file made by Prologos when playing U-Boote and de-activating them when you want to play US subs. When using a German speechpack (Spax pack, official SH4 German speechpack or GWX 2.0 speechpack) with the Prologos files, first activate the speechpack, then activate the Prologos file. It isn't perfect, but MUCH better than having US voices on U-Boote with an occasional US voice thrown in......... until this combination is fully sorted. Hopefully, we will have a GWX 2.0-based fully working German speechpack for SH4 before long.
No need at all for a second install!
Thanks to Spaxspore, prologos and Rolf Eschke!
I agree with Stabiz, thanks to the three of you!
i downloaded all three, combine them @ my desktop level by hand then installed one mod into JSGME, seems to be working just fine. I got a real kick out of the "ALLLLAAAARRRRRM!" that was great!
certainly beats them speaking English!

Hello,
MANY THANKS for all your efforts!
I'm manually installing your fixes over the german speech files and they work just fine.
I only have a problem with the download link for the last fix.
Doeas it work for you? All I get is the filefront home page....
EDIT: the link works now!
I love your efforts on the german voices and sound effects. If I may, I would like to suggest something for the Relieve the Watch sound and the Battle Stations sounds. In the film, Das Boot, they annouced watch change like this, "Stand by for watch rotation", without the piping in. As for going to Battle Stations, Das Boot also showed this. They all did is annouced "Go to battle stations" over the ship's intercom and all you hear was men running on the metal decks. No Alarns or sirens. I hope it helps you.

Here's another correction, works with the GWX 2.0 pack and should also run with the Spax pack: http://files.filefront.com/Torpedo+reload+speechzip/;9747262;/fileinfo.html
This one activates "Tube ... ready" and "Reloading tube......" ("Rohr ... feuerbereit" and "Rohr ... wird nachgeladen")
Pack is JSGME ready, just activate after activating the main speechpack.
Have fun!:D
Just a couple of questions. First, although I have GWX2.0, it is currently not installed yet. At present I'm still using 1.3. Would the speech from GWX1.3 work as well? Also, is it just a matter of placing a copy of the speech folder in your Mods folder and activating JSGME? Thanks.
Fish,
i downloaded the FIVE mods that are spread throughout page 1 and 2. on my desktop i merged them all together into spaxs mod, mostly additions into the file structure. activate that you'll only be hearing German, and there are only a few very minor sounds left out. no other issues.
I think spaxs used the latest GWX sound FX? dont quote me on that though.

HI guys...after playing sh 4 u-boat missions ...i already miss the germans voice and the sounds (all of them) of the gwx 2.0 in sh3....for now i will try to reinstall sh4 until patch 1.3 then instal the german pack voiçe from ubi...and after that install the rest...i hope this works...
by the way....i m new here :D ....but i have been reading all your post since 2004....and must say that all you made a funtastic job...keep going :) ....

Would it be possible for someone to put all the "fixes" together into one download for us "file challenged" folks?
Thanks!
GerritJ9
03-03-08, 04:23 PM
capt_frank, I was already thinking along these very lines, but it will take a few days to do this as I would also delete the redundant files. Furthermore, this would be a "Work In Progress" as I am not under the illusion that we have fully corrected all speech faults. Plus, I will have to ask the GWX creators for permission to publish a modified version of their speechpack.
Fish40, the GWX 1.3 version should also work- I'm not sure if there are any differences in the two speechpacks, but if there are they are probably minor.
Philip Heinrich, installing the official SH4 German voicepack in SH4 v1.3 will merely overwrite the original US speech, so you end up with US submariners speaking German as well......... not quite the intention I presume. The ONLY way to use both US and German speechpacks as required is by using a German speechpack with JSGME, until the SH4 developers add multiple speech options as available in IL2 Sturmovik for example; for now it's activate the German speechpack with JSGME before starting the sim when you want to play with U-Boote, and de-activate when you want to play with US subs.

GerritJ9 ...thanks for the explanation.:p ..i will do that later...because right now i m doing a campain in a u-boat and what i did was instaling with german language then ,before instaling the patches 1.1 ,1.2 , 1.3 , 1.4 ,i instaled the german voiçe pack from ubisoft ...then i copy the speech to a diferent folder...uninstall the game....and install again this time with english language....after all patches instaled including the pack u-boat missions i overwrite the speech folder into the game folder...and it works very good....the incovinient is if i play the game on the americans side...but for now i will keep this....
( sorry for my english....:D )
now i would like to put the sounds of the submarine (like the sound of torpedoe in the water and crash dive alarm etc) just like in the sh3 with gwx 2.0....but i dont know if its possible ...need help
and thanks for the feed:D back

I've made a little sound mod to replace the american general quarters on/off and watch change files in order to compliment the existing sound mods in this thread. It's JSGME ready, so just drop it into your mod folder and activate.
So here it is. It's my first go at modding, i hope you enjoy it. :)
Download link: removed, now bundled up into ATR's one stop compilation mod
Guys here's what i've come up with. its a full sized download, none of its mine. It's Completly based on Spaxs work, with all the mods in this thread, plus Maat's. i just cleaned it up.
- changed the volume of engines sound
engine sounds used were from another mod
- cleaned up some of the ogg files, meaning, crash dive INI file is just the bell with the AALLLLAARRRM! scream set in the speech file but i used a trimmed (shortened) version used from yet another mod, so the sound is no longer cut off mid dive.
- changed the emergency blow speech file to remove the nasty high pitched hissing sound, so it plays the speech with the deeper toned air sound
- put in a periscope sound from another mod
- removed the "whistle" from the watch rotation.
- adjusted battle stations, secure from battle stations to not include gongs, just intercom chatter also from another mod.
heres the deal, i dont want to just go putting this up for download as these sounds have been such a cluster to get sorted it. what i have compiled works 100% but its a combination of all the mods in this thread by the authors, which was based off of other stuff from GWX, as well as including Maats stuff from his mod that had some technical issues.
to be honest, with work right now ive been on the road for 7 days, and have two more days looming, i dont have the time to go back and compose an exorbitant credits and history file.
If i put it up it has to be at the blessings of Maat, as well as all the guys here...
im sure most of you already found work arounds for this but it maybe helpful for those that have not.
thoughts?

Well, enable this when you want to use Uboats. I tried to list all the contributors in the shoddy excuse for a readme file. If there are any objections i will remove the link and the file. otherwise for right now i just see it as the community working together to resolve an issue. i take no claim to this, other than the fact i put all this stuff into one, and made some very minor adjustments.
if i forgot a name in the readme (very likely) let me know i'll make an adjustment to the one line readme file.
Just enable this as the a lone sound entry in mod enabler when you're using the Uboats, if you switch to fleet boats remove it out.

Great work guys  I recieved the add on today and I started a new career, and was immediately dismayed to hear American voices  When will Ubi get it right? I can't believe they missed this one out.
Anyway, I'm downloading the 2nd version of the speech fix now.
Many thanks for your hard work :)

Just got the u-boat missions and the first thing I noticed were the american voices. Couldn't have that. Was about to request german voices or try to figure it out on my own.
Nice to see this here. Thank you so much.
:damn:
dammit! just got shot at by a liberty ship and Mr. Bjorn K. Hahn informed me; "We're under attack, Sir!" ...in English
maybe hes been getting lessons since we left port but something tells me i let one slip by! i'll report back with any changes/findings.... let me know if you guys find any more too.
I just searched and played each of the "we're under attack" speech files, they were all in german???
can you guys think of why my system said it in english? is there another file i can search for and check?
The only thing i can think of, the "we're under attack message" may have been played from a US track, which is supposed to be said by a different officer than the German one. In any event, im going to use the german speech file, rename it to replace the US Voice when the mod is activated, while keeping the other ones and see if that works.
this should be a fun one to test out
while im at it, adjusted the crash dive and regular dive sound to a hair under 8 seconds and included a fast fade out to clean it up.
and last, there were one or two emergency blow speech files left with the nasty high pitch hissing sound that i edited as well.
i'll report back.
====
Edit
Discovered. "Flak gun ready, and Deck gun ready" sounds SH4 was using the english files, so i have also adjusted them to be german.
SH was also using the english files for "were under attack" those have been corrected
Schultzy got back to me with the secure from battle changes
updated credits file, so now i can sleep at night :)
expect update shortly.

Are ya shoor dis time? :rotfl:
Great job!!!!
Are ya shoor dis time?
LOL yes!
these guys keep sneaking english in on my patrols! I think i got them all though this time. no more english lessons on this uboat! :o
i could have just issued a 'patch' but i like to just keep things simple with mods, one mod per 'subject area' :smug:

ATR-42, good work, but "we re too dep to launch, sir" is still english.
P.S. Sory for my english.
RATS! Confirmed here as well....
thank you! i'll fix it at the next release. All those finding english please post, when i get three changes or more i'll update!
 :arrgh!:
PS. for some reason the game calls on some english files regardless of their german counterparts, when i find one the game uses i take the german file, rename it to the english file its calling on and switch them out. Usually there are three per speech subfolder.

Does this new Mod include the previous "German Voice Extra" Mod?
It does not, if you wish to use his sounds you can enable it after this speech fix, he just changed some sounds. All the fixes are included into this compilation.
EDIT=========
I think i may have misread the above post, this mod includes every mod in THIS thread by each author, all piled up into one. There was another sound fix released in another thread with some sounds, this compilation does not include that one.

Hi Spax every time i try and enable your spech fix through jsgme it seams to run jsgme twice take for ever as the hour glass stays on then it comes up with jsgme not responding.....
i have tmo 1.5 latest
pe 1.1 plus patches
RSDCR
ROW sound v9
i really need this sound pack also can i play american side with this add on or if i can get it working do i have to take it of.:p
Its normal. Its just checking and then loading HUNDREDS of files. when you hear your computer "beep" you may need to click the desktop or click out of JSGME to move the window, once you do it will expose the "overwirte caution", accept, allow it to overwrite give it the time it needs to load all the files and it will work.

I installed the newer FuMo-30 radar last night and I can't remember if I was getting German or English radar reports. I haven't installed the latest version of this sound mod, though. It was just a thought off the top of my head.
Another thought is damage reports.
M. Sarsfield
03-20-08, 09:58 AM
I verified that the radar contacts are in German. A while ago someone fixed the "Destroyer Making Attack Run" sound. Has this one been converted to German, too?

Last night i was getting a good working over by escorts, i heard 2 reports of deck gun damaged in english, so i need to look at those.
then i'll update this.
as far as attack run, i havent had that sound feature activated, i didnt think it worked....

I have been looking into modding this myself as I too enjoy the german voices when playing in German subs. While I, for the time being, will just rename the speech folders when I want german, I feel that is really low-tech. I would like to incorporate a toggle in the sound options. Besides the speech file, there is a .cfg file in SH3 that sets a numeric value of 1 for english voices and 2 for German, and 3 for French. I copied that file over to SH4 as well as the speech folder with the german voices. I simply have to find a place to put a toggle switch to set the value of voices to 1 or 2 and then make it all work. One more thing, in the main folder, there are two files called sound.act and shsound.act How do I open them and what do they do. I tried moving the ones from SH3 to 4 and I had no sound, so they have something to do with the sounds, but I don't know what.
I am only a low level modder though. I dealt mostly with sound files and very small graphic changes in SH2 and 3. I don't know how to use photoshop at all, and that is what I have to open DDS files. So if any of you expert modders and photoshop artists could give me some pointers I would really appreciate it.

You need to d/l and install the JSGME: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123908
Install this utility to the main SH4 root folder. You will see an icon that looks like a "gear" wheel. Double click on this gear, and the utility will create the Mods folder. When you want to install a mod, simply unzip the mod to the newly created Mods folder. Next, create a shortcut of the gear icon to place on your desktop for convienience. Click on the gear to see the available mods. This is the utility interface. Here is where you can activate, deactivate, or uninstall your mods. The beauty of this utility is that it backs up all files for you. If you deactivate a mod, the utility replaces the original files for you. Truly a must have!

is there a way to make it so this mod dynamically switches between langauages depending on what nationality you're playing as. that's the way ubi should've done it anyway..
not without major code changes i think... for now you need to exit out and let JSGME do the work...

My solution: I have two SH4 1.5 Installs....one has English Speech MOD(s), the other German. Also some other Fleet Boat-specific Mods for the English/American Install.....and Operation Monsun, for example, only for the German version.
In a nutshell, when I sit down to spend some SH4 1.5 Quality Time, I decide before loading whether I want to be American or German. The dual Install doesn't really eat up a great amount of Hard Drive space. Actually, I also have a separate SH4 1.4 Install as well.
Version Eight
June 5 2008
Replaces v7 completely, beefed up to 178 meg.
This version includes all the changes in v7 but adds/adjusts...
- modified the "blow ballast" voice to exclude the nasty hissing sound but still includes the better 'air release sound' effect
- blow ballast voice tone now adjusted to meet the current tone of the active crew members under all conditions.
- reduced over-modulation of 'dive' sound
overall very minor adjustments but just a basic clean up. The blow ballast was really bugging me...

steed,
as stated earlier in the thread, its not locking up its just loading the thousands of files. It will even beep at you. what you need to do is tab through teh windows or click the desktop, or main window to get to the pop up window from JSGME to Okay it.
about the english files,
In order for me to fix those sounds i need to know the exact phrase. i will look around though see if i can find something similar.

ok, will try to recreate, but I will need some extra deck gun crew as mine looked like swiss cheese after the PBY fired on them.
When I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to call up the windows task manager it always shows JSGME is not responding and there is a general lock up on the mouse as well which results in calling up the W.T.M. to clear the problem. I have put in other big sound mods to try and no problem.

I get the same exact thing. My JSGME fails to respond when I try and load this sound pack. I thought that it may be lying and I let it go for 5 minutes but no luck. Task Manager as well as the JSGME window itself both say [Not Responding].
not sure what to tell you, JSGME handles this mod fine on my end and for most others, its a massive amount of files to move though.
i even found the new version of JSGME seems to do an ever better job activating it.
you will get a not responding window while it works through it, and with older versions of JSGME sometimes the overwrite window will be hidden as well.
good luck
I'm not bothered about this small problem as I play the German side the most these days. I will give the new JSGME a go when I change sides, when I don't know.
The manual swap over only takes me a minute. ;)

Thank you so very much for this careful work, i am just done now reading all the way up to here. i was so hopeful to see U boat operations correct and historic. This will be a great happiness to have.
btw, a small historic note, sometimes they used gongs and sometimes not, as sound travelled a long way thru water, depended on where they were and the Kaptain. Also the whistle of the Stabsobersteuermann Quartermaster might be used or not.....
this is great work and i am very grateful to all who are doing it to make this much more real.

Hi All,
Just want to say a big thank you for all the work on the mod.Like so many others it used to bug me not having the crew speak german on a uboat.
Much appreciated :salute:
For those of you experiencing "hanging bug" during the install, i want to emphasize something...
I never experienced this until i upgraded my OS to win7 but now i see what ive gotten a lot of PMs about, and it just dawned on me that they were likely reports from vista users...
when you enable the german speech fix, JSGME will appear to "hang". it wont appear to be doing anything, even the hour glass will look frozen. I had to wait and FULL 1-2 minutes before the dialog box popped up to enable the mod. And id like to further emphasize that the dialog box appeared BEHIND the JSGME window, i had to move the mod window to get to the enable popup dialog behind it. This was all before JSGME would show the green progress bar in the bottom right...
moral of the story, be VERY PATIENT! :) happy german sailing...

Concur, I have also had the same behaviour with Win XP Pro SP3, JSGME is comparing and pulling hundreds of files during this process it is intensive and with my now ageing AMD X2 4800 it takes a while.
