View Full Version : Returning from SH4 - Mods that will work with GWX

Well now that I have returned to the cold, dark waters of the Atlantic after a prolonged tour of duty in the balmy Pacific in SH4, I really need some help to make the best that is to offer with GWX.

Thus far I have completed a brand new install of Silent HUnter 3 and patched it to 1.4b. Next and the excitement almost caused palpitations, I installed Grey Wolves 2.0.

A quick test run, by playing a couple of the training missions, shows that all is working well.

There has to be a but & the but is; I have been searching this forum to try and find which of the countless other mods, that have been developed, are recommended and will not cause any issues when run with GWX.

I hope this topic has not previously been launched, when another thread gives this advice, but it would be helpful I suspect to others who swop oceans and sides, after commanding a Gato against the men of the red sun.

Seriously I fancied a change and would be grateful for any pointers to make the transition as painless as possible.

Many thanks,

John:up:

They always come home......the young commanders never stray too far from SHIII.

All my mods are compatible with GWX. I must inform you though, I'm currently transfering all my mods to a new host site. This site is located at the bottom of my sig.

I have added your site to my favourites and will doubtless be making many visits once I am able to complete the registration process.

I have to admit that having commenced my first patrol out of St Nazaire, that I had forgotten what sheer fun SH3 is, especially once one adds GWX into the recipe. I enjoy SH4 but did miss SH3 and once I had completed a complete re-install of my PC, found that I was drawn to getting back into a U-Boat and getting my feet wet in the Atlantic.

So I shall examine your site in depth, thanks for the heads up and see what else I can add, before immersing myself back home into SH3.

I think anything can be made to work with anything, if you pound on it hard enough.

What specific kinds of mods are you interested in? Graphics? Sounds? Realism? Unrealism? All I'm saying is, there are mods that will accomplish just about anything you want, but you have to know what you want, rather than just loading up everything.

But you probably know that already. I'm just trying to find out your interests so I can recommend something.

In truth having not touched Silent Hunter 3 in any meaningful way for almost 12 months, I guess it would be true to say that I wish to take suggestions from others as to which of the many mods, will add to my enjoyment, on top of GWX, which already offers a fantastic environment and realism to the challenge of commanding a U-Boat.

I know that that statement might be a little broad in its expanse, but I find the advice of others is invaluable at seeking those mods to add to my simulation, whether they be graphcal, environmental, or even those tiny cahanges that make it all the more real.

Any advice is welcome as I can always try things to see what they do, by using JSGME, which makes life easier than manually adding things. It is also the advice as to what will function with GWX 2.0, so as not to get problems halfway into a game, normally when you have not saved for some time.

Without a doubt, I and others I am sure, who are less knowledgable, find help on these forums, without any worry of being ridiculed/ignorerd, like takes place on some sites, when you ask for advice.
I have always found that people will take time out to welcome and assist those who are new or need advice.

for starters get Venatores stuff.
then Capzap1970 does have some good emblems for you
AOTD Madmax adds ships to your rooster that you do not want to miss.

and then there is this user interface mod... OLC or something... never used.

if you are using manual targeting, the olc gui is absolutely recommended. try it once and you never want to play without this new interface. it gives you a new experience in manual targeting. new ways to get the data with historical instruments. no sliding instruments any more. this is amazing, try it yourself! in my view, it is the best mod for sh3. gives you a complete new feeling and lots of atmosphere.

No need to be embarrassed about that. Back when I played Silent Service it had all ships shown on the map, all the time. I had a blast 'dogfighting' with destroyers I never actually looked at through the periscope. "That looks about right. Fire one!" Worked every time.:rotfl:

I still use the Weapons Officer. I just take several readings anyway; act historically even if I'm not actually doing it historically.

OLC is a must, its just the bees knees..not sure bees have knees to be honest but you get my drift.

Now if anyone could give me a clear answer on whether SH4 effects for SH3 will work with GWX 16K scene then I'd be very gratefull. I've scoured the forums and so far I have two answers, NO and MAYBE.....any advance on the MAYBE would be great. Feel free to comment anytime racerboy:yep:

they work, as in "you do not get a CTD"

that is my experience. i used them for 48 hours, and am waiting for a compatible version. lotsa potential, and people say there are a few drawbacks and bugs.

bottom line:
try the 2.22 version and make up your mind. no harm to be done.

I must admit when I played SHII, I used to just guess the right time to fire, and I got about a 70% hit rate, not bad i must say for pure guesswork!

OLC is absolutely a must if your for manual targeting. I can't play without it now, with the "aim-bot" that is auto-aim theres no real satisfaction when you hit something. When you've worked everything out yourself, there is a real sense of satisfaction when you see those fish hit home! Also a sense of frustration when you find yourself in rough seas which makes it bloody hard to get the data with the sea, and sometimes you make a mistake like do the speed etc wrong and its just like god damnit!

GWX 2.0 is a must too! can't forget that!

Well fellow sailors of the deep, dark and stormy Atlantic,

Thanks to you all as you have given me lots to think about and to try out, to make my experience even better.

I agree that I am glad that this has not turned into an SH4 beasting as I guess that whichever version we choose to play, keeps all of the submarine simulation alive, something that hopefully the developers will observe, when they look to new versions in the future.

I do enjoy both, but persoanally feel that I enjoy the U-boats more as they pushed the technology to the limit and had to play catch-up in relation to the money and development that was shared amongst the Allies throughout the war years.

I value the time that fellow captains spend in adding their thoughts and have created a thread that I can use to extract mods from their experience and give them a try.

Thanks,

Hey mate!

For what it's worth, my recommendation is:
-GWX 2.0
-Combined Scene and atmosphere by Reece
-Realweatherfix

Reece's mod contains a SH4 scene.dat of some sort and a well done reworked atlantic ocean color, really nice...
Haven't noticed the effects from Realweatherfix yet, but apperantly it should be effective and be working fine together with both Reece's mod and GWX.
Lot's of great mods and WIP's out there! Gotta love the modders of this forum!

Following conferences with GWX hex editors Privateer and Ref, and in keeping with previous statements made by myself and Racerboy elsewhere:

The answer to your question concerning the SH4 effects for SH3 mod is most definitely "NO." It is not fully compatible with GWX and given the right circumstances may even cause CTD's when elements that are called on by the engine and/or the GWX mod are not found within the SH4 effects for SH3 mod.

The impression that some users may give, that SH4 effects for SH3 is indeed compatible, is erroneous and based on temporary luck rather than knowledge.

Users may of course continue to use the SH4 effects for SH3 mod enabled over GWX against our advice, and do so at their own risk.

OK.
Here are the facts.
You can run the Sh4 to SH3 effects if you wish.
Just like I can put Aviation fuel in my Dodge Pickup truck.

Sooner or later?
POOF!
CTD, lost Career, saves corupted, etc, etc.
Then you whine that GWX is screwed!!

I know for FACT what will happen.
And before you ask,
YES!!
I tested knowing exactly where and when this would happen.

I can reproduce it on demand!!

I say,
Roll the dice!!
But don't come crying when the DoDo hits the fan!!

If RB wants to fix HIS mod?
More power to him.
I offered to assist him and THAT is posted!
For someone who claimed to be so
"For the People"?
Where are you now?
