I now have GWX 2.0 running fine now but the load time is excessive. Not one cup of coffee but two. What can I do to minimize load time of a saved mission ?

Hi!
i visibly shortened my loading times when i upgraded my pc memory from 1024 to 2048MB.
But you can reduce it a bit adding Lite Harbour Traffic mods, too; or disabling what on your pc uses memory, for example antivirus background running, internet connection..

bye!

Without knowing how your system is set up, it is hard to tell...

GWX is load intensive - meaning it has to load an awful lot of stuff into it to get it all to run. Having said that...

Put as much memory in the machine as it will take. At LEAST 2 Gig worth if not more.
Make sure all of your unnecessary processes are shut down.
Make sure that your hard drive is defragmented.
Load as few a mods as you can.

A more 'drastic approach' would be to look at the speed of your hard drive. If you have the money, it might pay to upgrade it to a faster one - perhaps even with a SATA interface.

Hope this helps.

Neal, I have all of the above and do all of the above so that doesn't help. What about this merged campaign some people are talking about. How do you disable that ?

It is one of the optional mods in your GWX Install, disable it ( if activated ) with JSGME. Make sure you are in port when doing this.

Neal, I have all of the above and do all of the above so that doesn't help. What about this merged campaign some people are talking about. How do you disable that ? Hi!

The default GWX configuration contains all the campaign elements for the Arctic, Atlantic, and Mediterranean theaters, with specific elements to support those single player missions that occur in the Indian Ocean. There is an option for a Black Sea-only campaign for folks who are in the Black Sea, and an Indian Ocean-only campaign for those who are already in the Indian Ocean and who aren't planning on returning to Europe on the current patrol.

There is also a "Merged" campaign that includes the default campaign, the Black Sea, and Indian Ocean campaigns in one file. This option has to be specifically enabled, and is used when you are planning to transit between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean, or if the longer load time doesn't bother you.

The Silent Hunter III game engine loads in every campaign action for the entire war, and World War II was a big war; for example, it will load in the D-Day invasion even if you're still in September 1939. It's my understanding that Silent Hunter IV only loads about six months of the campaign, so its load times are much shorter, but until and unless GWX switches to the Silent Hunter IV engine I'm afraid there's not much we can do beyond what folks have already suggested.

Jib are you talking about a Career game or single mission games?
because if its a career game I cant help you but if its a single mission
this will help you. just be forewarned that some of the GWX included
missions are overlayed on the campaign layer for participant units so
those missions would not be compatable. this is true for gwx missions
as of the 2.0 release I dont know if it is true or not for earlier missions
I never had any trouble with the 1.03 ones I played though.

I have a campaign loading time of about 3 minutes which I think is long but I read somewhere that one Kaleun has a loading time of 20 (!) minutes. So I guess it's not too bad for me. Not sure I would play the game at all if it took me that long.

Right then....:D

Here's the vital stats.
View these and then try to argue that the load times are unreasonable.

Stock 1.4b:
Air Units = 13
Sea Units = 49
U-Boats+Subs = 8
SCR Campaign = 19249 lines
RND Campaign = 402082 lines
LND Campaign = 11968 lines
Total = 433299

GWX 2.0:
Air Units = 40
Sea Units = 182
U-Boats+Subs = 24
SCR Campaign = 486859 lines
RND Campaign = 629050 lines
LND Campaign = 53925 lines
Total = 1169834 :o :rotfl:

Thats a 169.98% increase in campaign scripting alone. Don't forget, when you click START, all the items above are loaded each & every time into your PC's memory.

:hmm: Are you starting to understand why GWX takes a bit longer to load?:arrgh!:

For those wishing to reduce the loading times in GWX, I recommend total removal of the campaign files so all that data doesn't have to pass through the bottleneck.

You young whippersnappers have it easy (really, you do!)

I had to beta test GWX on a 1ghz processor with 1gb memory, and not only did I have time for 2 cups of coffee, I had time to do the shopping too...

But did I complain.... no, no sir, I persisted, and loaded up the game, again and again, and got all the laundry done too, and the dishes, and, and...

and I ingested more coffee than can possibly have been good for me, :o :o

can't you tell? :arrgh!:

Well in my current computer, its exactly 4 minutes to load the main screen and 7 minutes to load the carrer. I double click sh3.exe and go to the bathroom, comeback to my room and change my cloathes. The screen loads, I click load game or start patrol and go downstairs to prepare my dinner.

If you are reeeealy geeky and have plenty of RAM and can great a 1GB RAM drive (and still leave your system with 2GB RAM for playing) you can use a program like Junction to create symbolic links (NTFS junctions) to the RAM drive. Then copy the campaign files to that location on your RAM drive. When your campaign loads, its limited by the speed of your CPU and RAM. Goes from loading times measured in minutes to times measured in seconds....

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Junction.mspx

I've used this techniques in various games. Use a utility like Filemon to find out which files take the longest to load, and simply put those files on the RAM drive, create the link, and watch it go.

Well... It's simple. Never run GWX2 on this coffee-mill you have)) Throw it out, and buy normal PC. What do you like more, coffee or Silent Hunter?)
I have loading time 5-7 minutes with merged campaign on, and high-res skin pack included. If you're not loading a save each time you missed a ship, and play normally without loadings (realistic way, i think) it doesn't bothers a lot. The result is worth for waiting...
