:up: Thats an excellent idea! Introducing the I type jap sub and the midget submarines,why not.But if the comunity modders allow me we can go further forward,could be achievable a great mod implementing these new units and adding more compartments for ALL the existing ones?Imagine the 3D enviroment if some more stations were implemented,I dont know,Officer or Captain quarters,machinery or torpedo room.....,figure out.
So,we have now something to discuss about in the next months.

Yes, and with the air recon ability introduced with the upcoming expansion we could create a mod wich allows the sub to surface and launch its own recognition seaplane!!:arrgh!: :arrgh!: :arrgh!: :arrgh!:

In general, I would like to see these Jap boats roaming the Pacific as an added threat to the US missions, as well. You never know when Bungo Pete might have an underwater helper waiting to say hello.
The KD classes were based on German WWI designs (U-139) and the L4 class were based on the British L Class design. These would probably be easier to model, since there's probably more information on their european counterparts.

It is inconceivable to me that nobody has ever tried to mod them as human-drivable, so anybody who has attempted same is free to chime in here with a list of obstacles, bugs, and missing features they encountered.

Will they have the correct interiors? Voices?
UBI did the German boats because their patterns were already made, therefore easy to transfer. I think it's a preliminary to a new Atlantic campaign, with SH4 standards.

They have made playable cold war subs so why not a japanese WWII one.:yep: I personally thought they would have made a japanese sub add on instead of a U-boat one, U-boats belong in the atlantic.

I just had an idea, using Pack3D we could replace the 3D model of a current US sub with the Sent-Toku class sub 3D model.

i tested it but it doesn't work because the sen toku has no nodes for conning,the player and the crew dummies...

I just had an idea, using Pack3D we could replace the 3D model of a current US sub with the Sent-Toku class sub 3D model.
Nope... SH4 .dat files are different. Pack3D doesn't work properly with 'em. You should look for Skwasjers' S3D utility but I don't think it packs .dats as far as geometry is concerned yet. And, creating new vessels is more complex than that because you have to contend with all the other support files that describe the new sub. You might modify existing US sub files like we've looked at doing for new IJN vessels.
I started creating new surface vessels months ago as did a few other guys, but as far as I know, we still can''t pack sh4 .dat files yet...

hi, would it now possible to mod a fully working japanese sub, as they were used to shell santa barbara and bomb the us mainland too ?
The I25 (see below) has six forward tubes and none aft, had a floatplane on board and bombed the us mainland ! One of these sunk the carrier wasp...
looks like the ijn workhorse. It would especially go well with the uboot mod since we get to use airplanes..
can anyone tell me which programs to use to make such a sub in 3d and how?
to miner 1436 : could it be possible to have a copy of your current jap sub ? I'm dying to play one !

The line dictating the skin to use is in the Roster .cfg file. The tga should be in the .dat file. I think it is called a material?
I have only linked tga's to small things that reside in the .dats like torpedo's and bombs. Linking torpedo's and bombs to an object requires linking it as a material if using S3D.
I don't know if any of that information helps, i'm pretty noobish at all this. But I love the model of the sub, be great to see it working. Good luck :)

@miner1436... How did you manage to get all the geometry and texture chunks packed into an sh4 compatible .dat? I know that it was possible to use Pack3D to get *some* of the textures, etc in, but how did you handle the occlusion maps? :hmm:
A number of us tried this some months ago, and Skwasjer's been trying to get it into S3D...
[EDIT] AH, I see You modded the Tambor files... Ok, you're taking the same route we looked at, modding an existing file. Well, hey, that's cool too! :up:

So guys
We got some main Problems:
-the main conning of the tambor class isn't hide by the 3d model
-we don't get the textures working
-we need 3 flaks and one big deckgun
I know...:
-we can use the Uboat2A conning from sh3 as model and then we can move the flaks to their slots
-the textures are there, but they are in the sub hull with the form of a tambor class, but I am not sure, cause i want to make this with a DD and there i saw them
-We can rip the 3 flak model form the addon, so it would be the best when we hit it in the german campaign
Is anyone able to texture it??
I test the thing with a small conning, but iam not sure wether it works

Unless you find a way to pack the necessary geometry and texturing files into an sh4 compatible .dat file, you're not going to succeed... Sh4 .dats have extra information in them that sh3 .dats did not. As you said, once patched the tambor sub still shows, from all sides..
Maybe we could ask help at ubi directly to patch the jap 3d model ?
Also : is the forward boom always in this position?, because it sticks out of the water when at periscope depth.

I use pack 3D ,Silent 3ditor and wings3d
My situation with our Sen toku:
-I used the Tabor late war conning , it is not completely hidden by the ijn 3d model but when miner gots the textures u don't see it
-two of three flaks are on their positon and working
-the Deck gun is on its position, but it is upside down and i don't get it in right position although i tested it all
-the dive planes are not moveable
now I wait for the textures because when everything is black u can't see anyhing wich means I can't work

When u want a second deck gun i could make it, because in sh4 there are two deck gun slots!
In career u can get a double deck gun(bow and stern) and i know how to make it but we need 3 flaks!;)
So...i think I am able to add another deck gun but first we need textures...

At least with fleet boats any kind of gun configurations are easy to achieve via editing the unit's .upc files. You can even separate the double deck gun slot(it's one double slot by default) to two single slots, place any gun in any slot etc.

as an alternative you could give it the twin deckgun upgrade pack
and just swap out the second deck gun for your missing third flak
I put a twin forty on one in testing.

The model is better than the model in the stock game

Not sure if Pack3D is 100% compatible with SH4- after all, it was developed for SH3. Better bet is probably Silent3ditor, when full import/export features are ready.

Pack3D seemed to cause the skin problem, I am close to getting it to work, this means the skin is there but covered by caustics. Seom other guys had the same problem but got it solved, im no good at HEX editing but if someone here could actually get it to work then you would have my thanks!

I made a small mod changing the specs of the mk14 and mk18 into the ijn type 95 and type 92(e) respectively. It gives them the range and explosive power of the ijn torpedoes.To be used with the sen toku modded out of a tambor. I'm still trying to get the textures to work too.

Once you get the skins fixed you could initally release this as an AI sub. A mod was just released for an AI DIX2 and it would be nice to find and target a Jap sub, also.

same goes... but it misses nodes to make it functionnal, and I couldn't find how to export the parts I wanted to the tambor file, so I'm back to square one, trying to "fix" the stock non functionning Sen Toku. I thought of filling the sub with the uboot as well, then we need to remove the extra tubes at the rear, add two up front, and it doesn't solve the skin stuff.
If we could just add the missing nodes : weapons etc.., and fit it with a coning tower at the right place..
Is there any way to contact the two guys who built those subs for the game ? couldn't find an email at ubi.
in the meantime there is an ai "jap" sub made by nautilus:

But there was a good skin of a I-400 submarine made for SH3. I do not remember where I've seen it but maybe you could use that skin...it was reallu good..

Due to the nature of how SH4 renders it's models, you can't reuse SH4 models/dat files with Pack3D. Pack3D (developed for SH3 back in 2005/6) will simply screw the file up, afaik. You can however, try to abuse a SH3 model/dat file as the game still accepts the old style controllers. That said, you'd end up with a SH3 style rendered unit in a SH4 environment, not really worth the effort.
As said by someone else, model import is coming soon. I'm just very limited in my time so I haven't been able to complete this functionality yet. But I've made some succesful imports locally, just to give everyone some confidence. A little bit more patience, once it's out you can all go nuts of the hundreds and hundreds of models in the game. :smug:

to our russian friends : which files do wee need to change to clone a sh4 sub, then integrate it to the german campaign, the rest (boat specs) I can do alone but have been hitting a wall, since the game crashes everytime I try to patch in a sub mod which would add a jyunsen B type to the german campaign, the boat itself being a balao clone. I think the porpoise could also be implemented as it resembles an early war japanese type.
I'm still trying, I got the russian 627 files and hope to do what they did with the tambor but would like to know what exact changes they made, so as to be able to do the same with another american or german sub, at first using the german complete type 9 and then later on, as skwaster will have completed the import of a 3d file, change it to a real version of the jyunsen.
I got real good blueprints from zaza, a plus a couple good pictures as well, thanks!
If anyone can help, please do.

in RL subfight did occur, but mainly on the surface : one sub spots another first, fires a salvo and that's it... That we already have with the JAP AI subs, I'd like to see AI fleetboats though, for the axis side of things ;)

The I-400,I-401,I-14 all had2 periscopes. One approach scope and one attack scope.
The attack scope is the taller of the two and smaller in diameter to make less of a wake in the water.
