View Full Version : @ Meridian Please read....... ? Regarding Res Fix & Monitor refresh rates

Hi Meridian.
Hopefully you're reading this. Didn't want to take this to PM without your prior consent, so here it is. After reading your comment regarding res fix not working with screens below a 75hz refresh rate, I'm looking for a new flat panel. The question is should I be looking at horizontal or vertical frequency ? I think I may have found a nice Samsung but if the latter applies I think I'm still stuck. Any advice is greatly appreciated. BTW you have at last cleared up the matter as to why I couldn't get the fix to work since changing my screen, saved my sanity there mate
After some searching early results appear to suggest larger screens = lower vertical refresh rates....... it almost seems I'm doomed not to have my dear old resfix to ever work again :( !!!!!!
Best regards.

No - I'm sorry. Perhaps I misunderstand your dilemma. But my ResFix runs 1600x1200 @ 60HZ on a flatscreen....
Terrible banding sometimes a day, but looks very good!

Seems kinda strange. Some people get it working, others not.
All I know is as soon as I drop my screen rez down to one that sets a 75hz refresh, it will work.
As soon as it drops to 60hz it wont even load and I get a DrWatson pop up error box. It's driving me frickin nuts.
EDIT: If it was this one you were looking at it's the same one I was just about to get.

Well I'll be damned. I just got it to work.
I set my desktop to 1024 x 768 first. Then loaded SH3 with the resfix installed and it worked.
Subject, what resolution is your desktop set to?
I run the game (and my desktop) at 1680x1060x60hz, and I've never had any problems at all.

Must be a driver or DirectX issue then. Other than that I can't think what would cause it.

Hi Meridian.
Coincidence or what that is the very same panel I had in mind
My desktop at present is set @ 1600x1200@60hz using a SyncMaster 214T. Perhaps the drivers may have some bearing on things, tho I've rolled them back to so many others in desperation I've lost count.
Specs (in case this throws up anything) are:
Asus P5N32-E SLI
Intel Core2 Extreme CPU QX6700 @ 2.66GHz
2xGainward Bliss 8800GTX 712mb ......... (tried this combo in SLI and single card mode) using Forceware version 169.21
2GB Crucial dominator @4-4-4-12
X-Fi Fatality
XP Pro SP2 fully updated
November 2007 rls DirectX9c end user runtime
plus the usual hd stuff.
I've tried this with and without using the ACT method so I'm really stumped.
Best regards.

Just try an experiment first.
Set your desktop to 1024x768 @ 75hz, then try to load SH3 and see if it works with the ResFix installed and these line in the D3D9.cfg file set:
resX=1680
resY=1050

OK tried single GPU mode, and in the words of Muttley (Dick Dastardly fame).......
"Rassen Frassen locked resolution !!!!!!"...
As you may have guessed it's still locked @ 1024x768 :damn: Seems I'm doomed to wander the seas in low res  Any other ideas ?
Best regards

P.S Just placed my order for that 24" Samsung beauty £291 inc VAT & shipping

Subject, what resolution is your desktop set to?It's fixed resolution for flatscreens. Running 1600x1200 for both game and desktop.
Re. monitor: I looked for finest/smallest pixelsize and wanted a 4:3 ratio screen (not too keen on these wide ones  ) and found this baby http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/L2000CN.jhtml

Fubar:
When you set your desktop to 1024x768 does SH3 actually load up or do you get an error box?
If it loads, hit the menu button on your monitor and check to see what it says for resolution.
Make sure you have the Resfix installed correctly first and that you have definitely edited the D3D9.cfg file and input your screen Rez.
I have one quick question regarding this issue. I use the D3D9 file but I never seem to notice any changes to the resolution of the game. My desktop changes and I have to make sure my X and Y are recorded in the D3D9 file or I have a crash but the game resolution never changes. Am I doing something wrong?

Meridian.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Deskop set at 1024x768@75hz (man it's yak !). SH3 loads fine. On menu check monitor says 1600x1200@60hz :hmm: .cfg is fine and installed correctly shipmate. Does this all sound right to you?
@Q65 easiest way I found to see if things is as they should be is take a screenshot, then, take a look at the properties. Hope this helps. If it crashes then you have the fix set up wrongly or a bad install.
Best regards.

I know where your coming from Subject, but not strictly true. Screen res is optimised for flat panels, not fixed, as far as I'm aware.

Sounds as though SH3 is running at 1600x1200@60hz on your set up then.
Load it up and take a screenshot, if the screenshot comes out at 1600x1200 then you should be good to go.
You just have to do the same as me. Set the desktop to 1024x768 before loading SH3. Pain in the neck I know, but, it works, so what the hell.

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you Meridian. Already did the screenshot dance and .bmp properties are telling me it's running 1024x768.

Fubar2Niner:oops: you're right!
I can select any desired resolution, but if selecting anything but monitor's native solution (1600x1200) the screen is scaled by either monitor's built-in scaling or nVidea panel's scaling... and - to put it frankly - both looks like crap to me.
Good luck!
