Model+textures are my own with the exception of the bridge characters and UZO models which were "borrowed" from sh3.

Very nicely done, flakmonkey! :)

But...

The parts of the u-boat facing away from the sun should be more deeply shadowed. It's too well "lit" from all sides. Combine that with the off-kilter focal blur and it gives the look of a "toy in the bathtub", similar to the miniature model effects used in older movies.

Unless your POV is supposed to be mere inches from the sub, there shouldn't be any blurring. A slight softening of detail the further down the line of sight you go would work better, but only if used very subtly. Same goes for the waves.

It looks as if the camera lens was covered with a fine gauze due to the many vertical lines across the picture, a pattern like a half-moire or fresnel effect.

Overall it makes for a very unnatural feel that is jarring to the eye.

Your attention to detail and color is excellent, although the clouds have a flat, 2-dimensional appearance. The sun ought to be coloring them as light is filtered through and reflected from the clouds.

The ocean to the left is too dark. Again, the way sunlight interacts with the scene has to be considered. It's as if the u-boat is the dividing line and everything to the left of it is unlit.

It appears the sun is merely a single, directional light with lots of bloom added. Sunlight in nature is very pervasive and lights up nearly everything, except where an object casts a shadow, but don't forget about ambient light that prevents even shadows from being completely black.

Try to imagine it, instead of as a single light, more as a ball covered with thousands of incredibly bright floodlights that shine in every direction.

Now, before you get too upset, I have said this with the intent of offering constructive criticism to help you improve as your work progresses.

It is still a well done piece of work and shows great promise. It's only the effects that need to be rethought.

Cheers all, its actually a composite, the background (sky/water) is from the freeware app terragen, the rest is maya.

The OTT depth of field effect was copied from an sh4 (uboat addon) screenshot that i kind of liked (even though it makes the sub look like a toy in a bathtub!).

Graf Paper:
Renderman gets the blame for the overly bright look since it was just a basic GI render + the sun was an area light with soft raytrace shadows.

+Ive been doing this for almost 10 years now (mostly as a freelance modeller) so this is probably as good as im ever going to get:cry: .

It was not my intention to hurt your feelings, flakmonkey, and I sincerely apologize if I have.

As I said, my observations were only intended to point out some areas where you could focus your efforts toward improving the picture.

You did good, I was just nudging you to do better. I know I surely could stand a great deal of improvement myself!

I used to be a very talented artist but working with this digital art and 3D stuff makes me feel like a 5-year old kid making crayon drawings. The kind only worthy of display on the refrigerator by a loving parent...in other words, it's horrid. :rotfl:

I'm am far more comfortable working with the old-fashioned tools of brush and canvas or pencil and paper.

It's still a very impressive piece of work that shows excellent imagination, an eye for composition, and attention to detail. :know:

Keep up the good work, fm! After 35 years of drawing, I can tell you that technique is something you'll always work on improving.:yep:

Now, post us another one! :|\\

Andy Warhol would have been proud!:|\\

Truly inspired nuttiness, fm!

Although you could say it's a socio-political satire of the commercialization of warfare by the military-industrial complex. :hmm:
