View Full Version : DW2: Will it ever be made?

Hello! first of all, i'm a SH3 player and realism freak. I calculate all things from AOB to range and speed using charts and manual actually used in the WW2 instruments. But one thing i miss from SH2 was the possibility of controling other machines (destroyers, airplanes, so on) and you can find that in DW. However DW is really outdated in it's visuals and i wonder if there are plans for something like a sequel. What do you think?

I doubt so. DW did not sell well. SCS has other projects now (non-games). Even DW was just an extension of older games, sometimes it looks like quite minor extension in fact.

So much potential, what a waste. I'm sure there will be 5 huge 3-DVD releases for hugely demanding games that are nothing cept for pretty visuals and no market for a good sim? The ultimate naval sim has not been made yet and we will need to wait even more.

Don't believe we will ever see the "ultimate" naval sim........at least not a civilian version of one. It's been years since I've played it but Harpoon seems to me to be the only sim that might fit into that category at least from the perspective of being a naval strategy sim where you command fleets and not singular platforms. DW is at the top of the "individual platform" list. And even though I know that the eye candy isn't what the sim is all about it still would be nice to marry up the graphics of SHIV with DW. At least for the those times I'm leaving port and just before I dive.

Why looking for DW2 when there are so many things to be improved/corrected in DW? If SCS decide to release the game's core files to the modders, the game's experience will definitely take to another level. Like a previous poster said "...so much potential"

Unfortunately they've made it very VERY clear that they aren't going to release the source code. I think there may be some "CLASSIFIED" stuff in there or something that they use in the actual navy training sims that they make that they don't want to get out.
I'm not entirely sure of the reasons, but they've made it clear that they don't want ANYONE modifying their source code.
Anything not source code (New ships/aircraft/models/weapons/sensors/database stuff is okay. Drivable platforms though, they made it VERY clear that adding those is a BIG no no.)

I would LOVE to see a Dangerous Water II, but I doubt it's going to happen considering what's going on with Sonalysts now. I don't think we can expect many "public" sims released from them anymore. Unfortunately, Dangerous Waters also flopped on the market so there's not much finacial push for another one either.:nope:

Classified ? Now you made me laugh :rotfl:
But then again, US do classify some really funny things (RSA for example).

I think they just don't care. Why would they ? Project which does not sell well, it's just a bother. Something you want to forget.

RSA? Sorry, not up to date with the jargon...

DWII would be a nice idea, but like others have said DW has a lot of locked up potential. To be perfectly honest, I'm no master at this game (oops! I meant sim!), in fact I'm pretty ****e at times lol. Saying that a small graphics update would go a LONG way, especially the ship models/textures/water etc etc.

Just a question by the way, where can one find a copy of the Dangerous Waters manual, is there a place I can buy one from? Such things would really help me on my way to getting to grips with the sim! :ping:

AFAIK its not free to download it. You can buy it from the net but then again why not buy the whole game?

For me, it's a wait and see. But each passing day where there is nothing forthcoming, not even a word from SCS, makes me wonder. I'm hopeful. Very hopeful that is. But right now, I'm not expecting anything.

I believe the manual is a PDF file on the game disk. It would probably be easier and quicker just taking that to your local Kinkos ( or whatever print shop is in you area) and having them print it off for you........just a thought.

If there was a graphics upgrade, the platforms I think would be affected most by it would be the airborne platforms. I recently got into SHIV, and it's a really beautiful simulation. I think it has some advantages over DW, though, that made it a lot easier to make it beautiful. The most important of them was that SHIV is a lot less ambitious in terms of scope. It only dealt with WWII in the Pacific theatre. To do a similar thing with a modern simulation, they'd have to do something like limit it to just one hypothetical future conflict, such as China-Taiwan, Iran, or maybe a resurgent Russia. Another route would be to choose the time period to be in the 1984-92 range and then just do the big US v. Soviet shoot out that never happened in just one theatre the North Atlantic, say.

That makes everything a lot more tightly defined. One can make a simple list of platforms for the graphics artists to work their way through. It's also obvious that they reused a lot of the graphics in SHIV from previous simulations. Like, the US naval officers hats are wrong because they used the old German officers for them. Being able to leverage off of previous graphics intensive sims is a big step.

You may still be able to find copies of the printed manual out on the net for purchase somewhere even though Sonalysts stopped printing them.

If you go into your Dangerous Waters folder, the manual is in a folder called ironically enough, "Manual".

It's in a PDF file. You can either read it on your computer or take it to Kinkos and print it out (Be warned that it's 558 pages but you should be able to save some money by double siding the pages. Thank god there's nothing in color in there so you can have it printed in black & white. My suggestion is to do two pages per side of a page because the lettering is very large and it would cut down on the pages needing to be printed IE.. page 1 and 2 go on your first page.. page three and four go on the next page and so on...)
