Is there a tutorial for Dangerous Waters?
I'm too confused using the sonar, the wire, etc... It's diferent compared to the Silent Hunter saga.

There are Tutorial videos on the Dangerous Waters CD which provide a brief introduction to various aspects of the game including sonar.
Also have a look at the Commanders Academy Wiki (http://www.commanders-academy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dangerous_Waters_-_Wiki)

Edit: forgot to mention the Tac manual, get it on subguru.com (http://www.subguru.com/downloads.html) (it is called something like "Timmy's Tactical Manual")

The manual of the DW CD is to deep and complicated (at least for me). I prefer another one, more simply and clear...

Mh I can't see I mentioned the actual DW manual in my post before.
I told you about three other sources, so I cannot see the point in your last post Sirkam http://www.taktik-sims.de/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif
It can be helpful to have a multiplayer session in a training environment scenario with an experienced skipper who can explain the sonar basics. Also it is best to pick a single sub-platform and learn to cope with it, then have a look at the other playable vessels.

Thanks Janus.

To be honest I can't see anyone learning the game efficiently if they don't read the manual, except if you maybe played SC or 688 before DW or have some knowledge about modern naval platforms and tactics. I didn't find the manual hard to understand and comprehend.

With that said, the TACMAN mentioned by Janus makes for some good reading and goes into the tactical side of the game a bit more than the manual - which most of the time just tells you how to push a button and not WHY you should.

Also, Molon Labe made an ASW tutorial mission on TMA (subbased). There is a very good walkthrough in .doc format in the zip. Naturally you can find it on www.subguru.com , but there is a thread about it somewhere here too.

That is true indeed.

Thanks for the hat tip. :D

I should mention though that the tutorial mission/walkthrough will be of limited use to someone who has not read the manual and become familiar with basic ship station functions.

Actually if you play in multistation with someone that already knows the ins and outs of dw the learning process is much much quicker. :p

My own three steps method to learn DW :

1- Read the manual

2-Play the game

3-Go to step 1

You can also meet up with someone online who can design a training mission for the two of you and you talk through Skype. That's how I trained one of my friends. He did read the manual but I helped him through it a bit with some simple multiplay missions.

Thanks everyone.
I'll start with FFG while i read the big manual in the single training missions.

Sorry, i forgot something:

Is there any mods (or supermods) to improve the sea and land textures?

Don't forget to download the LWAMI mod. To put it simply, it's the greay wolves of dangerous waters.

..and the Sakurra Mod as well !

I remember water textures, but that may also have been for Subcommand. Not sure. Anyway, if it exists, you can bet you can find it on www.subguru.com. (Edit: forget that, it's not there.)

Subguru (aka Bill Nichols around here) did make a star-intensity mod though. Reducing the starbrightness to realistic levels. Other than that you can expect very little if any graphical mods for this game. There are not many portholes in subs, you see. ;)

Graphics arent the focus of this sim anyway.

''Graphics arent the focus of this sim anyway.''

.....Nor of posts in this forum - many must find the Sirkam and Reaper51s type of animated signatures very tedious !

Edit: But its easy to block 'em out. :ping:

Try going to www.subguru.com (http://www.subguru.com) for the downloads. And don't be afraid to design your own basic training missions. Particularly for sonar training. I've got a few somewhere........but it's easy to make your own. Just add you and one/two other vessels, turn on truth, watch and learn!

Ok, thanks Driftwood.

I have another question. When i play, I have sound glitches in the music (only in the music, like mini-loops and bugs). Is it normal?

Janus
02-15-08, 07:46 AM
Not sure about the music, but as I recall I had them too. Nevermind though, you should turn off the music anyway to hear to sonar ;)

Sirkam

I think the same, better turn off the music to hear the sonar and the explosions.

When I had a slow computer a year ago or so I disabled 3d view or kept it closed. That helped tremendously against clicking sound. But never allowed music to play.

Blacklight

The music interferes too much with the experience. Turn it off. Also turn off your external 3D view. This will make things a little more difficult but at the same time increase your learning by a thousandfold because you won't be tempted to look "outside".

I suggest starting with one of the submarines (I like the 688i best for a beginner and those nice green screens are soothing to the eyes :D)

Stick with that platform till you're fairly competant with it.. then move up to the Seawolf. Once you master the Seawolf, give the Kilo or Akula a try.. then keep moving up from there.

I've owned this game for two and a half years and I STILL havn't truely mastered the FFG or the aircraft yet and I can VAGUELY work in a Kilo or Akula so take your time. There's no rush. Just keep working one platform till you get used to it. In no time at all, you'll be a terror on the high seas. :arrgh!:

You want Sakura Mod v1.02
This mod makes oil rigs targetable by missiles and adds some "parked" vessels that you can toss into your missions that won't react to an attack (Usefull say if you have a mission involving a drydock or something). He's working on adding more "Parked" vessels for a future version. Make sure you read the instructions that come with the mod for setting up the oil rigs. He's also added a lightly armed and a heavily armed oil rig. Be careful approaching those. :D

I mean there are "Sakura Mod 1.02 Full" and "Sakura Mod 1.02 LITE"...Must i download both?
