View Full Version : Weapon max range bug?

I decided to test some weapon ranges out today (mostly those used by the Akulas), and I'm not quite happy about some of my findings.

First, I tested the SS-N-16 Stallion. The manual states the missile has a range of 54nm, so I went ahead and set the RTE to its max but to my surprise the missile went 38nm and dropped the torp. Deciding afterwards I must've made a mistake somewhere I tested it again and made sure the RTE is set at its max (53nm) - but exactly the same happened, the torp got dropped at 38nm.

On to the SS-N-27 ASM, the manual states the max range of 119nm. I got a mediocre 41nm out of it before it decided to cruise into the sea for no apparent reason and disappear. No explosion, nothing. Again, I made sure the destruct range was set to its max.

I got the same results with the SS-N-27 ASW. Manual states 19nm (for the missile alone), I got 12.3nm before it dropped the torp.

The SS-N-27 LAM doesn't suffer from this range deficiency and neither does the American equivalents - TLAM, TASM and Harpoon all got their stated ranges.

Just to clear some things up, I checked, double-checked and triple-checked the destruct- and RTE ranges on all the tests and fired the same weapons more than once, I've RTFM and even used DWEdit to make sure the values in the database are consistent with what is stated in the manual - which they were. Now, either I'm completely incompetent when it comes to naval simulations or I've misread something in the manual (which I really hope I didn't - otherwise I'm sounding like a complete fool) OR - God forbid - there's a bug with the ranges of some weapons. I'm using stock DW 1.04, no mods except Subguru's "Towned-Down Stars".

I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and if there's a way to correct it because at the moment it's really taking some of the enjoyment out of the game for me.

The subroc range error is known and well documented. See, e.g., http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48 (actual SUBROC ranges).

The -27ASM is news to me, but not terribly surprising.

This is just one of many reasons who no one should ever play stock DW.

SUBROC: These weapons will now be reliably on target with a small, intended random error. The AI is now particularly good with SUBROC and ASROC

Establish meaning of the minimal speed in Database as -1 for SS-N-27 ASM.
Now, the missile is removed on time, instead of on distance cruise.
When you will put -1, the missile will be removed on real distance, instead of on estimated time.

Thanks for the input, I installed the LWAMI mod and the ranges are fixed. After reading all the changes that they made to the game, I'd recommend it to everyone even if you are new to the game like me.

LWAMI is THE mod to have for DW !
Also the Sakurra mod is good to have too !

Something that kind of irked me is that tha SS-N-27 LAM is described as having a ballistic trajectory but is shown flying like a cruise missile. Also it would also be nice if the SS-N-27s had a different model than the Tomahawks. Shouldn't the US have an ASW missile too? What about the Sea Lance?

Speaking of bugs though, has anybody else ever had an incident where a weapon is reloaded almost immediately? I've had that happen a couple times too often.

This is actually pretty funny....I think the USNI labeled the -27 LAM as having a ballistic trajectory as a typo. SCS actually put that typo into the model of the -27 in Sub Command, but decided to make DWs -27 LAM slightly different than what the USNI reported ....the USNI info has not been updated, though, so the typo is still there.

As for the model....I didn't even realize they just used a different colored TLAM model until now, just thought the model looked a lot like one because the missile was a copy of the TLAM, thanks for ruining it for me! :p

The Sea Lance never made it into service.

And yes, I've seen the reload bug too.

What a shame that it didn't. :nope:

I just noticed that the MH-60's Hellfire missiles also seem to have slightly lower range than what they're supposed to. I had to move a bit further "in range" before they would hit their targets.
