I decided to test some weapon ranges out today (mostly those used by the Akulas), and I'm not quite happy about some of my findings.
First, I tested the SS-N-16 Stallion. The manual states the missile has a range of 54nm, so I went ahead and set the RTE to its max but to my surprise the missile went 38nm and dropped the torp. Deciding afterwards I must've made a mistake somewhere I tested it again and made sure the RTE is set at its max (53nm) - but exactly the same happened, the torp got dropped at 38nm.
On to the SS-N-27 ASM, the manual states the max range of 119nm. I got a mediocre 41nm out of it before it decided to cruise into the sea for no apparent reason and disappear. No explosion, nothing. Again, I made sure the destruct range was set to its max.
I got the same results with the SS-N-27 ASW. Manual states 19nm (for the missile alone), I got 12.3nm before it dropped the torp.
The SS-N-27 LAM doesn't suffer from this range deficiency and neither does the American equivalents - TLAM, TASM and Harpoon all got their stated ranges.
Just to clear some things up, I checked, double-checked and triple-checked the destruct- and RTE ranges on all the tests and fired the same weapons more than once, I've RTFM and even used DWEdit to make sure the values in the database are consistent with what is stated in the manual - which they were. Now, either I'm completely incompetent when it comes to naval simulations or I've misread something in the manual (which I really hope I didn't - otherwise I'm sounding like a complete fool) OR - God forbid - there's a bug with the ranges of some weapons. I'm using stock DW 1.04, no mods except Subguru's "Towned-Down Stars".
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and if there's a way to correct it because at the moment it's really taking some of the enjoyment out of the game for me.
