Hi all.
Is there any way I can increase the screen resolution to 1280 x 1024 from the standard 1024 x 768??:hmm:
Do I do it through my Nvidia Control Panel or some other means???
Thanks in advance!

I have read the instructions and done what it says.
Have tried to open the CFG file but am being told that I cannot open it to alter the files??
Any suggestions?
Sorry but I can't.
It should be a notepad file - d3d9.cfg located in SH3 parent directory.
It's always worked for me with multiple installs.
I can only imagine that your file is corrupted somehow.
Good luck,

These instructions apply to Windows XP... Vista is slightly different.
1> Find the D3D9.cfg file in your Silent Hunter 3 directory.
2> Right-Click the file and select Open With...
3> Choose 'Select the program from a list'
4> Scroll down the list to find Notepad
5> At the bottom you can choose to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' - this means any file with the .cfg extension will automatically open with Notepad from this point forward.

Display Resolution
As installed, SH3 doesn't offer you a choice for a display resolution setting. The game fixes it at 1024 x 768.
To override this limitation, SH3 modmaker Kegetys has developed a DLL file that permits greater display resolutions when playing SH3. Kegetys' SH3 Resolution Override DLL can be downloaded from one of the following links:
Mirror 1 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/kegetys/dl.php?f=dx9res10&e=zip) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/kegetys/dl.php?f=dx9res10&e=zip)
Mirror 2 (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/dx9res10.zip) (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/dx9res10.zip)
Mirror 3 (http://www.filefront.com/?filepath=/theofpfaq/sh3/SH3_Mod_DirectX9Res10.zip) (http://www.filefront.com/?filepath=/theofpfaq/sh3/SH3_Mod_DirectX9Res10.zip)Make sure you read the enclosed instructions to customize the DLL's configuration file, d3d9.cfg.
For Windows XP SP2 users:
We're not finished yet. In order to get Kegetys' DLL to work, you'll also need to install Microsoft's Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/appcompatibility/default.mspx) (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/appcompatibility/default.mspx) and perform the following procedure to customize it for SH3:
On Windows' Start menu, select "All Programs/Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0/Tools" and run the Compatibility Administrator.
When the program opens, make sure "New Database" is highlighted under "Custom Databases", and click the "Fix" button.
In the "Name of program to be fixed" box, type "SH3". Now, click the browse button, and select the sh3.exe in your SH3 install directory. Then click on the "Next" button.
Under "Operating System Modes" select "None" and click the "Next" button.
In the "Compatibility Fixes" box, check DelayDLLInit, and click the "Parameters" button.
In the "Command Line" box, type "d3d9.dll" and click "OK". (You can click the "Test Run" button to make sure it is working). Click the "Next" button.
Click on the "Finish" button. Then click the "Save" button, name it "SH3", and click OK.
On the "File" menu, select "Install".
Close the Compatibilty Administrator.
Enjoy SH3 in high display resolution.
I did it exactly as you described, but with no results.:hmm:
I can't check it now, because I must do GWX beta tests without any modifications of the game.
(Disclosure - this was posted by another subsim user originally (I think it was jaxa)).

For whatever reason this doesn't work unless you can run a given resolution at 75hz refresh rate or higher.
My screen is set at 1680x1050 but will only run at 60hz refresh at that setting. As soon as I drop it down to a resolution that can use a 75hz refresh it will work.

Hi,
I don't know why you guys bother with "Microsoft compatibility toolkit" for XP SP2 :hmm:
This is no more useful, don't need it anymore.
I can't remember who exactly to thanks, but make a search for :
"SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b" here on those forums.
I use it and work very good with no problems. I'm in 1680x1050 wide screen ( 60hz), SH3 looks awasome :rock:

Unfortunately the res fix doesn't seem to work for 1280x1024 monitors like mine...:damn:
Simple question, what is the SH3 directory? and where can I find it? Thanks
If anyone can help, I just bought a new wide screen monitor, and would like to change the game to a hi-res, I have a windows XP computer, I also cannot find that D3D9 config file. Thanks for the help.

You can download the files needed from the mirrors listed above. I just downloaded them, but am unsure as what to do next to be honest. Is there a tried and tested method of doing this? Would be very nice to run GWX 2.0 in higher resolution!

Hello Marko Ramius.
What exactly are you using? Im interested in what you use cos it appears that I have a quite similar monitor myself.
Searching for "SH3_XPSP"_etc didnīt gave any result at all.

I fully agree to this:yep:

Hi guys,
Here it is : http://files.filefront.com/SH3+XPSP2+Res+Fix+for+14bzip/;9666622;/fileinfo.html
I really don't know who to thanks about this file ; If you (creator of the zip) read this ---> :rock: :rock:
Part of the readme :
" Just copy the two batch files and the SHIII.sdb file to your SH3 directory,
and run the "SP2 Res fix.bat".(I've included a batch file to uninstall the
fix should you ever need to.)
I've included the d3d9.dll and d3d9.cfg in case you don't already have it.
Thanks to Kegetys for dx9res10 and to +G for the idea of creating this zip. "
After the files are in SH3 directory and run the batch file, open : "d3d9.cfg" in notepad, you should find some text with this :
resX=1680
resY=1050
useFiltering=1
enableScreenshots=1
screenshotPath=.
This is the content of mine. Change the line : ResX=xxx // ResYxxx like you want and enjoy.
And , again, SH3 looks awasome !! I was first a bit disapointed by the change, but quickly , i was so happy, LOL !!

My GWX2.0 harbour is slow enough without higher resolutions! :-? ...but still interesting to know it can be done, maybe for when I upgrade next.
Can you get true widescreen or is it stretched to fit?

Meridian, you may have at last saved my sanity. I had this fix running for years till I changed my LCD...... now it no longer works (60hz refresh rate) :damn: . Guess I'm going to have to revert to CRT or finder a better LCD. Do they even make LCD's that refresh @75hz or higher in a 1600x1200 or higher reso ??????? I'll have to go on a hunt.
Best regards.
Fubar2Niner.
EDIT: It suddenly occured to me that so many skippers ask this question I'm surprised this solution hasn't been stickied, along with the amazing refresh rate prob discovered by Meridian.

Thought it might be. Often I've seen people get excited about 'widescreen' resolutions in games, only to find it's stretched. If you want a strecthed widescreen you nvidia control panel can do this anyway (if you have nvidia). I always prefer fixed aspect.

Hi, I too had difficulty getting this game going.
The 75Hz trick did it for me.
I have an 8800GTS card, running on a LCD monitor.
You need to create a custom resolution refresh rate >60hz.
I went with 1680x1050@75hz and the game now starts.
The windows application compatibility trick listed here should work, for most folks.
However that batch file listed, SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b.zip, will not work properly unless you also have the M$ WAC tool installed. It's not required, that is if the author should have distributed sdbinst.exe with that batch file (there would be no need to install the WAC tool at all if that were the case).
My game works, but it is "stretched to fit". Now how do you fix that, easy if you have an Nvidia card. Use Nvidia Control panel, go into Display, then "Change Flat Panel Scaling" and select Use Nvidia Scaling with Fixed Aspect Ratio. Use a 4:3 resolution in your d3d9.cfg file. Good bye stretch to fit, however this feature will not work properly with an 8800GTS card! Arrgh, a reboot looses the setting or worse it stays grayed out.

:) Hi :)
I saw that some of you had trouble to change resolution .
Ok , here's what you all do :
I have a FileFront link , click on that link , there you will find a high res.fix mod.
Download it .
If you has used the Microsoft compability kit uninstall it , and delete it .
With the new res.fix there's no use for the compability kit .
Ok , once you had deleted it , go to the folder where you download the res.fix , and use the winzip to unzip it to : " C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\silent hunter III " directory , and open up the high.res.fix .
In the high.res.fix you see these files + readme text :
* d3d9.cfg
* d3d9.dll
* SHIII sdb
* SP2 Rez fix unins...
* SP2 Rez fix.bat .
The one-1 bat files:
"Servicepack 2 rez fix bat" double click on it , and it will install it self to your BIOS automatically .
The other file Service Pack unins = Uninstall , you must use that one if you want to uninstall for different reasons , once you done this , go into the "d3d9.cfg" file and
cfg what resolution you will use , it must be the SAME resolution you use in your monitor , when you done that , go back to the SHIII folder in "My documents",
and set the same resolution you have in d3d9.cfg file , and when you finished do that , then go back to your main directory : C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\silent hunter III\data\cfg" and open up the Main file , and set the same resolution like you done earlier , and you done. That's it :yeah:
Vista is slightly different.
.
And how does it work in Vista than?????

ahoy mates,
I fixed this problem myself by doing this (for windows xp):
go to start>my computer>the hard drive where you have SH3 installed>program files>ubisoft>silent hunter III>data>cfg
in this directory, you will see lots of .cfg files.
>right click on Main.cfg
>mouse over "open with" then choose wordpad or notepad
then you will have the .cfg file opened up. in here you'll see lots of program commands and variables. scroll down to the section titled "Video"
In the "video" section, you will see an entry called "Resolution." Just replace the values in this space with the resolution that you want. 1280 x 1024 is what I am running.
Before you close this window, be sure to save! Don't bother with "save as" just do an old-fashioned save. If you do not save, you'll just have to open this window and do it again.
FYI
I also turned on Dynamic Shadows from here. Just change the "no" to "yes"
hope this helps. I think this is much much easier than doing the aforementioned methods.

The same question. I tried and tried and tried to apply the HiRes Fix, and it donīt work in my W7.
All suggestions are welcome!!!

I too am curious and confused about the res fix, as there are conflicting methods it seems.
One thing that confuses me is the res fix appears to be for XP SP2 .. well I'm running SP3 ... is there any difference? I'm hesitant to apply anything described as being for SP2 when I'm running SP3, until I've been assured that it'll work without breaking my OS. :hmmm:
Also, someone said they got higher res just by changing a setting in their Main.cfg. I haven't tried this, but shall, just to see if it DOES work. That would be nice, but if it were actually that easy, I doubt there would be all of these somewhat confusing instructions and questions.
I was afraid of resurrecting a dead thread, but I see it was just resurected last week, so I don't feel so bad. :shifty:

FWIW I had no problems using the Res Fix in XP SP3. :DL
I also got it to work in Win7, altho not without a lot of tweaking because I prefer to run the game in a 4:3 ratio (fullscreen) instead of stretching it out to fill my WS monitor and I have yet to fully investigate what's going on with the different WS mods. What I did is outlined in this post:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1570856&postcount=21
That's with an ATI Radeon gfx card and the most recent (AFAIK) version of Catalyst Control Center.
Win7 users can also check this thread about Win7 in general as IIRC it contains a lot of discussion about resolution issues.

Thank you for your re-assurance :D that's all I needed, to know someone else had it work ok in SP3
Works fine for me here now too.
Surprisingly, the game now runs smoother and is MUCH more responsive as well. Go figure. The system likes it when games run at my desktop resolution.
Also, WAY WAY cleaner image, with 4x AA and 8x Ani. NO jaggies AT ALL .. should make hunting much nicer ..
Much better ... why the heck did Ubi limit the resolution ... beyond me ... thanks to the community, once again .....
:salute: :yeah:
hmmm ... where'd the 'beer toast' smiley go ...

For that one, I think you have to click on the smiley icon at the top (next to the font options) and then hit "show all smilies" and you get a popup window with a lot of add'l ones to choose from.
Glad it worked out for you - SINK 'EM ALL! :arrgh!:

In the MaGUI WideScreen Mod, there is included a d3d9.dll by Seeadler. This dll makes work the WS GUI in 1360x768. I try it, but Iīm not sure about the change of resolution is visible in the camera/bridge views. With this dll, the FRAPS works fine (not with Kegetyīs ResFix).
I donīt know about if it is a working fix for graphics (exteriors), or only a fix for Wide Screen.
Best regards.
