1. At what distance (yards?) can a sub skipper expect to be sighted by the bad guys in both daytime and night?

2. Did the Japanese have radar? And if so, what distance would they be able to spot a boat?

3. Does 0100z time just mean as it seems, 0100?

4. In port, on the crew management screen, do you fill up the DC slots at all or leave them empty until you approach a battle situation?

thanks

I can only answer no. 3, 0100z is aka 0100zulu, which is Greenwich Mean Time.

I have been sighted anywhere from 5000-3000 yards. This is subject to the type of vessel. Warships are more alert than a merchant. Night time the visual detection is basically cut in half. I have gotten as close as 2000 yards surfaced without detection at night. I probably could have gotten closer. It is a crap shoot.

Yes, late war they had radar. I do not know the distance.

That is up to you. Normally a sub would have 70-80 crewmen. Sometimes a few more and sometimes a few less. I make sure the cannon has men, the AA has a man and two go into the repair team.

Thanx. Do you always have to status report on time ? I compress time often and not paying attention to time when sending status report.

Negative. my last encounter saw me being fired upon around 6000 meters away at night surfaced by a Kuma light cruiser when trying to chase and intercept her. second try failed again so now give up. :damn:

So, for any who care to respond, do you have a stock distance from the target where you submerge?

Oh, another question dealing with crew management.
I see there are, I think, 6 basic operations areas on the boat. And see with the default management setup, 5 or 6 officers.
Would it be advantagous to scrap-out and recruit officers with skills/abilities to cover the 6 different areas?

Hi there.

Yeah, hope you dont mind me tagging my similar question onto here. I wonder about the abilities/skills/specialties figures. I knw basically what skills are needed in each area from searching the net, but I'm not sure about some of the finer points.

For instance:

The icons for specialities - so they reflect "training" that the cre member has in a discipline? And do they change from being in a different position on the boat? And do they override the basic numeric scores for each discipline?

For instance, If you have a guy with a COMMAND and a WATCHMEN specialty icon, with a 50 in watchmen and a 60 in command - is he "better" or does he have more "potential improvement" than a rookie with no specialty icons but values of 55 in watch and 62 in command? If I make the latter a watchman section leader will he develop in those specific areas and go onto get a specialty icon in that position?

Cheers,
Dave

In daytime I submerge before the enemy gets to five miles away. At night I use three miles for safety, but I'll run decks awash (30' in the Gato and Balao) up to 3000 yards. These are generally conservative enough that you can be pretty sure you weren't spotted.

I don't mind a bit.

I did a conversion and see that 5 miles converts to 8800 yds.

Note my range to target on the TDC. I was hull down at 7kts. I was not detected until my torps got within 300 yards or so of the cruiser. Note the white bow wake on the left. It can be done. Not to mention, this was a task force. Daylight surface attack is a crap shoot. ya gonna get nailed. The night time is the right time for surface/deck awash attacks.

I'm just a crack'in sub Capt'in!
