View Full Version : Final Pre-release Pitch Video Poll (I promise :)

OK - with testing well underway and no real problems detected yet (fingers still crossed), and with the release of the new ROW add-on update (way to go ROW team - looks awesome!!!), I've got one last set of Pitch test videos I'd like folks to take a look at and vote on if you have time.
This one is a little more complicated. First, there are 3 videos to compare, and second, I'm looking for two different votes - one on the way the boat looks in its motion, and one on the way the water looks.
For those who can, please view all 3 videos, then pick TWO CHOICES in the poll - first, which of the 3 did you like the boat movement best in, and second, which of the 3 did you like the water best in.
"Take 1" video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT90hLWKsyM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT90hLWKsyM)
"Take 2" video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5-6yvRChr4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5-6yvRChr4)
"Take 3" video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1j7QATqTBA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1j7QATqTBA)
If all goes well, depending on the poll results and the testing results (testers still welcome BTW - PM me if you're interested), I should have Panther's Pitch Mod ready for release by this weekend.
Thanks for the help

Great Stuff :D I liked the boat in video 2 the best; they all look great though. Can't wait to try this one out

Prefered both water and pitch in video 3.
But i saw some strange effects in the takes you presented, at some points in all the videos there was somehow a ''time warp'' wich caused the environment to freeze and resume. Does it also appears in your game?

LOL - no - that's a FRAPS artifact of gluing together short videos into a longer one (still using the trial version that only takes short vids - guess I ought to upgrade to one that will let me take longer videos if I'm going to keep at this stuff). I should have explained that I guess - it looks fine in game.

Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! I don't care which one. Anything is better than flying through the air or 'Hanging 10' on a surfboard.

I think the boat in #2 and ,ocean #3 which is what I voted. I think its very good, If what I mentioned in my PM yesterday could be figured out, it would be as real as it gets. Keep up the good work

I liked boat #2 and water #3. The Boat in take 3 is a runner-up, but I am prone to vertigo and the boat's roll might set me a-spinning (SH4 is as close to real ocean travel as I'll ever be willing to get!). I'd rather get 'pretty close to real' than 'sick all over my keyboard'.

Boat #3 is my fav for pitch+roll. I believe that it'd be better to err on the side of the dramatic.

What sea state and wind speed am I looking at, and how many knots is the boat making. Although I want to go with the #3 "wild and wooly" ride; is there any RL data on how these boats behaved in these seas.
I have only been on the ocean in "small" craft <puke>....so I have no frame of reference. I am thinking that something (GATO Class) that is what 100 yards long and weights 1500 tons and moving along at 10-15 knots may have some sea-keeping abilitities???, I know round bottom.
Water-wise, I really like #3, I am assuming that all three sea states and wind speeds are the same? So ocean #3 is really nice.
Nice work!

RDP I did or rather I took off Pitch and Roll. Boat's more stable now but miss the Pitch and Roll. I think I'm suffereing from 'Having the Whole Cake' syndrome. I'm really glad someone is attempting to fix this and you really have my support.
I picked the Boat in 2 and the water in 3.

For me it's boat #3 and water #1.
The boat in video 2 looked good... not too much wild rolling and enough pitching to give you that "shipping green water" feel.
Ditto the ocean in video 2.... looked a lot more like deep ocean rollers we should be seeing, than the in-shore chop effect as in video 3.
IMHO

When released, how will this Mod relate to the "ROW Sub Reflections and Roll Pitch Mod_vs5"?
Boat 2
Water 3
Could you show us a video of this combination, as it's got several votes?

When released, how will this Mod relate to the "ROW Sub Reflections and Roll Pitch Mod_vs5"?
This Pitch Mod will be installed via JSGME on top of (after) all of the latest versions of the various ROW modules - JSGME will report that it will "conflict" with the following ROW modules (in all cases, the latest versions available as of Dave's death, plus the Add-on):ROW Sub Reflections (item 3a on the list in the first post in the ROW thread)
ROW Controls (item 7a on the list in the first post in the ROW thread)
ROW Add-on (item 10, just released by Kriller2 and team)
and you should tell JSGME to go ahead and install/over-write because the files from those ROW modules will be included in the Pitch Mod, so you will get all the ROW aspects of those files plus my Pitch tweaks to those files.
The readme will also contain a complete listing of the files tweaked and the values changed, for those who might want to install manually for some reason or who might want to experiment further.
[edit] - I just noticed a post that seems to say that the new ROW Add-on includes the earlier "Controls" module (Item 7a noted above), so that it probably won't be necessary to use both item 7a and the Add-on. That won't change anything about the Pitch Mod, because it's built on the Add-on and therefore also on the embedded "Controls" files. I'm just getting both items 7a and 10 showing up in my JSGME conflicts report because I let the Add-on over-write item 7a instead of uninstalling item 7a first. Bottom line, you'll still install the Pitch Mod after all the ROW modules you use, and let it over-write whatever files JSGME says it will, and you'll be fine.

Could you show us a video of this combination, as it's got several votes?
I want to get a few more responses to the poll before I explain anything about them, as I don't want to subconsciously influence people's choices, but once I get some more responses to the poll I will address this question in more detail.
What sea state and wind speed am I looking at, and how many knots is the boat making.
All 3 videos are shot with the same sub in exactly the same weather conditions - sailing at ahead standard directly into the wind at a wind speed of 15 m/s (so, boat making about 11-12 knots into a headwind of about 28-30 knots).

1. Fair enough, that's understandable. In any case eagerly awaiting the final release, thanks a lot in advance.:yep:
2. With these boat speed & wind conditions I might in fact lean towards 3 & 3, although with water 3 some of the highest wave tips look a bit chunky (maybe it's just a FRAPS video limitation?). Wind speed being the highest value shown in the game, I feel there should be the occasional "water mountain" to plow into.:arrgh!:

I like take 1. The 637 & 688 class subs I served on didnt roll as much as 2 or 3 and since WWII Fleet boats were built with more stability on the surface I fiigure they should be more stable then a round bottom boat.

You know panthercules, it's damn hard to concentrate on the boat and the ocean when you have SUCH A MAJESTIC sunset dead ahead!
Anyway, I think I'll go for Boat 3, Ocean 2.

Okay! I didn't understand that all three were the same conditions until I read that last explanation.
Since in SH3 I always set the waves to 'x2', and since you described the absolute maximum conditions available in the game, of course I was forced to vote option #3 for both boat and water.:sunny:
If I can't have a full-blown gale, at least I can pretend.

I got a chance to play the candidate for the new roll/pitch. It feels natural and I like it. I would however reduce the roll one notch. In 5 meter wind I felt like a cork. Got a bit seasick as well:oops:. Other than that, I free camera up to bow and I felt like I was on a boat. Very nice really.

I must be daft; I did not realize this was MAX wind and seas for SH4. So I must change my vote from P&R #2 to #3; I already voted for sea state #3.
Thanks for the info Steve!

Yes, they were made to be stable. If you note, there are strips on each saddle tank. These were to help reduce roll. After all, it was a boat that could submerge for a time. Anyway, like I stated above, reduce the roll one notch (make it less) and I think it will be just great. Playing with the beta file last night was quite nice. The bow seemed to follow the swells it was attempting to get though. Even at 5 meter wind the props did not breech the surface. That is a good thing. Water actually went over the turtleback. Seem very natural:up:
