View Full Version : A memorial plaque for Dave (LEOVAMPIRE) & donation link
TDK1044

Hi Guys,
In the near future, Neal will be posting a donation link for the purchase of a memorial plaque for our dear friend, Dave Bunnell. All donations in excess of the cost of the plaque will be bequeathed to a 501c charity to be determined.
Donation Link for Dave Bunnell Memorial (http://www.subsim.com/Dave_memorial.htm)
What we need from you guys, are suggestions for the prose to be used on the plaque.
This could include a summary of Dave's role in Subsim, his friendship and impact on the communtiy, a salute from the Subsim skippers, and a phrase or portion of a poem that would be appropriate.
Post your suggestions in this thread, and we'll try and put something special together in order to honor Dave.
Thanks in anticipation for your contributions.
Regards,
Terry

the possible use of a poem that has something to do with submarinesand his work with mods would be fitting if at all possible.also willing to donate to a plaque

I thought this latin phrase would be appropriate:
Per aspera ad astra
This means: Through difficulties (adversities, misfortunes) to the stars

My offering would be:
God's finger touched him, and he slept.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
The image below my signature says what I think would be appropriate. Feel free to use any part of it if you like.

Dave was a genius disguised as a regular guy.
In one breath he could dazzle with his modding skills, in another, help a new member here with the simplest of problems. In both cases he would wish you well at the end of it all.
Damn I miss him.

Damn I miss him.
I believe that is the bottom line for all of us. Well said.
If I didn't know better, I'd think that Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote this about Dave
Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

Ok, I went by the engraving shop. Of all the plaque and wall hangings, I found this World Clock plaque to be the nicest and most representative of our community, as a world organization.

http://www.subsim.com/ssr/images/Dave_m4.jpg
The clock is of good quality. We would need to decide on the text and the engraver said he could convert a photoshop image of a submarine to an engraved image. I used Pathercules image as an example, it has a nice side profile of a sub heading toward a sunset.

I will miss him a lot. I get a very strong feeling when I see his private messages are still in my inbox, cheery as always.
I will contribute to the plaque, and to any other we make, if we decide to have a wall for it.
Still, I don't quite know how to say this, but... Sad as I am, you know how old Leo was. Always quick with a joke and a smile, finding humor everywhere, making sure everyone near him had a good time and enjoyed the ride. I think this is how we should remember him, and I'm sure he wouldn't want us to cry or be so stern.
I think he would have appreciated a plaque in a lighter mood?

Can you please use a picture with his favourite boat.
USS Seadragon, Sargo Class.

Nice Job Neal, very elegant and reflective of the community.
I think the text should be classy but not too over the top. Something short and remarkable.
The sub picture by Panthercules is perfect, with the substitution that Foo made i think is a great touch.
Nice job guys under less than favorable circumstances :(
I look forward to contributing.
Such true statements by Reallydedpoet and Doolan. He was so talented, and always willing to help ALL members regardless of their experience. Quick to throw in a joke and always kept things light. What always amazed me about Dave was his relentless pursuit of perfection for his work along with his never ending optimism.

Yes, not to sound like an echo, but excellent choice:up:
I agree with Foo that it would be a nice touch to use Dave's sub for the screenshot to be turned into an engraving. We, indeed, do still have his latest updated sub skin on the BattleFlags.net server. It is available at http://battleflags.net/killflags/leovampire/SS194%20USS%20Seadragon_LeoVampire_%20Sargo%20Foos kin%20BLACK%20WTH%20HI-RES.rar
I can't get any higher that 1680x1050 for resolution, but I'll take a few shots for you to consider if you want to use his sub for the plaque.

Ok, how about setting up a series of shots using the Sargo, frame it similarly as the one below, sort of a 3/4 shot heading to a nice sunset. If you can, hide the interface using the 'period' key, and pull up a little tighter, right. If you can save as bmp or png and zip, send to subsim@subsim.com (subsim@subsim.com)

Good plaque. I think he would have loved it.
Im not much for words in these matters, but when i think of Dave (as i knew him , of only on the forums,) for some reason, i think of the Robert Frost Poem, "The road not taken".
http://www.bartleby.com/119/1.html
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
To me, that was Dave, and how he made a difference here.
Neal, that is an excellent choice, and i totally agree; a proper thing since we are a world-wide community, as you stated.:yep:

Very, very fitting Neal. I heartily approve of this one!
I guess that's the least that could be done after he's done so much good work for no reward other than helping the community.
Really nice. Also as somebody suggested I would add some notes about his beloved sub the Seadragon something as Seadragon CO on ethernal patrol.

I think something like this would be very fitting:
"Dave LEOVAMPIRE Bunnell"
May you experience in Heaven the same joy that you brought to others on Earth.
"And when the end has come at last,
And unfilled shadows heaven casts,
Remember we who served and fell,
And to the hosts of heaven tell;
Bring home my boys who loved so well."
Create your offerings, Guys, and we'll set up a poll so that people can vote for their favorite memorial plaque prose.

I got the PM from Hawk stating what happened and I'm at a loss for words. Dave helped me out a couple times with ROW and he was a very pollite human being when helping solve certain problems I was experiencing.
When looking through his posts, I find it difficult not to cry for losing such a contributive member. Why does this place suddenly seem lonely? Probably because Dave was always here helping someone or contributing something nice for everyone to enjoy. It feels to me that if SubSim ever died, Dave's memory of what he did in regards to Silent Hunter would also vanish. Where's this fund so I can send some cash? Is SubSim for sale? Looking for a funding partner?
Very disheartening news indeed. I really don't know what to say? I remember losing a cat to sickness and several days after I started checking her bed with the hopes that she was in it. I guess that will be the same at the SS forums when people sometimes wait and hope that Dave will post something.
"He Gave So Much To So Many
Now He Has Gone
Grieve Not You Fellow Captains
His Reflection Will Live On"
Gunfighter I think you got it! Very nicely done. Classy, short, remarkable and fitting. Although im not crazy about 'gone' but it is well said. show one vote for this!
I like this because not only does it apply as stated from a community like subsim, but i like it because a relative or friend unknowing of subsim could read this and also "get" the message. its not over the top, its JUST right.

How about:
"He Gave So Much To So Many
Now He Has Gone Beyond
Grieve Not You Fellow Captains

The addition of "beyond" maybe softens the "Gone"...just a suggestion.

While you sort out the prose, I've set up the donation page. Francisco said Dave was a supporter of the following:
To the American heart foundation.
To the ASPCA foundation for animals.
To the AIDS foundation.
So any of those I think would be fine with him.
The donation page is up, I've listed the American Heart Foundation as the initial overflow once the cost of the plaque is reached. I will add the ASPCA and the AIDS Foundation later, so anyone who wants to donate to them will do so in Dave's honor.

Found out something rather interesting while I was doing a little research tonight looking for something fitting as a farewell sentiment for Dave's plaque. I didn't find anything I like better than what I've seen suggested above, but I did find out that Dave, as a former member of the US Armed Forces (any branch), is entitled to be buried at sea (for free, it appeared) by the US Navy in an official military service/ceremony. This can be done whether or not the deceased has been cremated (as Dave was).
Now, based on what has been posted by Francisco on the forum, I don't believe that he would probably want to do this, certainly not any time soon if ever (and I'm not sure that I could either, under the circumstances). Unfortunately, since they are performed on active duty warships on patrol, family members or other civilians are not permitted to go along to attend or witness the service, which I'm sure would make it even less appealing to the grieving survivors (though there was some mention of the possibility of maybe having it filmed - what I found wasn't real clear on that aspect).
However (and this was the cool part of what I found), if you request it the burial at sea will be performed from a US submarine sailing from Pearl Harbor. Given Dave's obvious devotion to the Silent Service in the PTO with his work on ROW, I imagine he might think of that as a very fitting send-off.
Rest in peace my friend...

This is such an unbelieveable community of people. In all my years of gaming, I have never seen such an outpouring of support and friendship - and, I doubt you'll find it on any other gaming board.

I'd like to make a donation, but I'm not quite sure where the money should be going. I looked at the AHA web page that this thread linked to, am I supposed to make the donation there? I didn't see a place to make a PayPal donation.
Thanks, in advance.

Sincere Condolences SS on your loss :(
Here in england it's been drizzling (light rain) cold n frosty at times, But a few mornings ago as i looked out of the window and i saw a most beautiful sunrise with reds/oranges/yellows and just shades of every vibrant colour you could imagine, My fiancee was up as well and i said look at this gorgeous morning (somewhat unexpected this time of year with the weather) as she looked she said how beautiful the colours were and then said it's just like on your sub game (she does usually call it a sim not a game so i left it at that) but i said yeah it sure does, She then said it's so sad that nice guy died (a nice guy indeed) , In reply i said yes for sure but then i said whenever we watch a sunset or sunrise we can think of him as i think i always shall
You see for my fiancee and myself sunsets and sunrises mean a great deal to us, She used to come n stay with me every other weekend when i worked away, One of our loves was to watch a sunset and a sunrise, Hence i or rather we loved the ongoing work dave and others put in to row etc
She indulges me with my pc and other hobbies but she really looks out for the dawn or sunsetting whenever i am in sh4 and will always say "it looks so real"
In short the sunrise/sets mean more than one thing to me now
Well donating to the heart foundation asap
Had to comeback and edit as i got a bit choked up writing this

I remember there is a memorial when leaving the harbour of Kiel on the right side of the Kieler Foerde (not the channel to the north sea!).
I think it was introduced with the "Grey Wolves" (SHIII) mod.
What about extracting it from the mod (with approval of the Grey Wolves creators of course), upgrading it with better textures and Daves name and implementing in a SH4 (maybe his RoW mod) mod?
It could be placed somewhere at Pearl Harbour so every captain leaving the Harbour can watch it when leaving the harbour.

Maybe we can do better than that. Given time, instead of a copy of the Moltenort Memorial, maybe a new monument can be constructed for Leovampire... IIRC, his favorite sub was the 'Dragonfish?'
Let me talk with the guys and see what shakes loose. (please don't expect a deadline/release date though)

That is a great idea - I've never managed to get out to Hawaii (yet), but from pictures I've seen, it must be moving to leave Pearl passing by the Arizona memorial - I think it would be cool to be able to see a memorial to Dave/lost subs off to port or starboard as you leave Pearl in SH4.
Dave's favorite boat was apparently the USS Seadragon, SS-194 (a Sargo class boat).
Thanks for kicking this around with your team

Cool bit! Maybe throw in some anchors, flags, and guardsmen too for an 'original' monument that has a plausible/believeable appearance.
Will be some time though if we are able to do something, due to current obligations.
Without trying to hijack this thread though... it deserves a good brainstorm session... to also represent past members (and the unfortunate necessity of allowing for future events) who are 'on eternal patrol' now.

That message was a birthday greeting from LeoVampire last October. Never knew the man, never corresponded with him, but he paid enough attention to things to notice it was my birthday, and he took a moment out of his day to send a greeting. He demonstrated true class. I greive at his loss.

Welcome aboard, Matt.
Update on the clock/plaque; the engraver is having some difficulty translating the SH4 screen shot to an engraved image. He showed me some test runs today, and he is checking in with the manufacturor of the equipment, they are going to help him with filters and fine-tuning the settings to get a better result. So I will check back with them early next week.

Just a lark, but it would be very moving to be able to sail past a spot in pearl while your crew mans the rail, with daves awesome sunset coloring the mood. No clue if its possible or not. Manned the rail passing battleship row and the Arizona manny times, and it always choked me up a bit.
Thanks for the update Neal...I was wondering how it was coming along.
Just a note from my end; I had offered to deliver Dave's memorial clock to Francisco on behalf of all the members of SubSim since I'm only about an hours drive away. I was notified by Neil in a PM, that Francisco has declined to have the package delivered by a member, and so it will just be mailed instead. I must admit I was a little disappointed at the news, but I'm sure Francisco has his reasons, and I respect that. Just thought everyone should know about the change in the plan.

Just popped in here to see how everything was going and to check to see if Dave had left me a message........
If only everybody we knew shined like Dave did. An exceptional individual who never seemed satisfied doing just what was required, he always had to do more.
People can say great things about us when we move on from this place, and usually only the best bits are told...... All we ever saw of Dave were the good bits.
I am truly saddned... Peace be with you Dave, I'm sorry I missed the chance to share more of your time here.

 I don't know what to say. it's been a while since i posted here, got caught up in SH3 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Without doubt Dave will be sorely missed. The clock will be a perfect memorial/tribute to him and his work here.
I don't know if anyone here will understand this, but I think I'll be taking my boat out into deep water and set the controls for a normal dive to crush depth, in the sense of the missing man formation. I feel this would be appropriate on a personal level, since those of us here weren't able to participate in the services rendered at his passing.

Ok, the engraver has exhausted his knowledge of adapting the screenshot to an engraved image. Here's what we need now; if we want a submarine image on the plaque, I'll need someone to take a black and white, or a line drawing, a simple silhouette of the type of sub Dave liked, and send to subsim@subsim.com
Something like this
http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/741/139175.JPG
I will forward it to the engraver by Monday AM; he has instructions to use it IF he is able, but in any case, to finish this by Monday evening so I can photograph it and send it.

I have seen plaques in the past where the pic is bascially pasted to it, then covered with clear plastic or something of that nature to protect it. The engraving is then done around the pic, below, on top, etc.
