I'm new with DW but i'm a vet with other sub sims as i said in my first post. I was learning the sonar (manually instead of autocrew) tonight.. I was comparing my results with "Show Truth" just for learning. After few hours i was getting good and at some point out of nowhere came 2 torpedo (from a Victor III).
By the way i was on a quick mission set to hard and i was "driving" a 688i.
So i successfuly escaped those puppies and i was able to detect, identify and precisely locate the russian sub just when it was 2.5nm from me.. At that time i was all stop.
Now... The game is set to hard and a torpedo make's one hell of a loud noise. Each time i've sent torpedoes i was setting the nav on show truth briefly just to see the explosion but each time the torpedoes where passing few meters from the sub and nothing! So i say to myself that this must be like in the movies.. too close so the torpedoes were not activated yet so i remove the autocrew from the fire control and i launch 4 more torpedoes (after waiting forever for reloeading). This time i set the activation distance to 650 yards and active search.
I used the torpedo cam with show truth again. This time i was ready to open the champagne and celebrate! What i saw was 3 torpedoe that passed inches away from that &%/%* sub and a fourth one that went to the enemy sub, turned back and came back to papa !! :damn:
By the way: with settings set to hard (yes i know third time i say so) the russian sub never changed course, speed or depth.. He let me kill myself without doing anything. He was cruising at 5kt and i was sitting there perfectly still.. The torpedo had the choice between and evil russian moving sub 0.001 yard away or a immobile friendly US sub 1.2 yards away and he choose me ?
Is it a bug with the game? When the voice say mission cannot be completed the enemies cannot be targeted/hit ?

When you're shooting at extremely close ranges like that, it's entirely possible for a torpedo to be very close to a valid target but not see it because the angle gets too extreme, or it turns the wrong way first when it begins its search pattern and by the time it takes its next turn the weapon has already passed the target. You definitely want to stay in fire control during a knife fight like that both to make sure your weapon is enabled at the right time, that the acquisition cone is facing in the right direction, and that one of them doesn't come back at you.

Something similar happened to me in one of my early missions (ST. Petersburg Blockade).
I was in a Kilo, waiting for that WASP to sail by. Fired a bunch of torps at it - all of which missed for a variety of reasons (bad TMA, bad presets etc.) Eventually, after wasting a lot of ammo I attracted the attention of the escort (a Burke) who turned around and began charging in my direction to check out the idiot making the racket. (I had a bit of a Perisher moment here, watching him approach on my scope)
So I think to myself "I bet if I fired a circling torpedo in his path he will run right into it and sink himself"
Feeling proud of my own brilliance, I loaded my torpedo, set the presets, gave myself a satisfied nod and fired the thing. It duly shot out off the tube, went a couple thousand yards, turned around and came right back to sink me :damn:
There was a saving grace here - my sub showed up under my Kills column on the Mission Status screen. I guess a kill is a kill, even if it is only yourself...

You have no idea how many times I've blasted myself to pieces with a torpedo or two by accident.:nope:

AH...I also managed to ruin my day more than few times... 2-3 times with active and even more with passive settings...drat!:damn:
that is why now im driving P3 :)

A friend of mine got Dangerous Waters and I made a special mission with a bunch of elements in it so I could start training him from scratch. We started out right near each other in a couple of 688i's.
Needless to say.. after a lot of movement, and tracking tutorial, it was time for me to teach him how to shoot a torpedo at the unarmed ship we were tracking together.
He ended up shooting ME with the torpedo.:nope:

Its been a long time since i've been addicted so much to a game! I play day and night now.. I wont be sunk again by my torpedoes! I discovered that we can control our torpedoes with their wire via fire control. Just by clicking on it on the fire control map it shows the torpedo control.
So that what if on torpedo comes back to be i'll press shutdown!:yep:

Man what were you doing to let a lethal enemy sub within 2.5nm:o(but quick mission generator does tend to give you wildly ridiculous placements).
I would revoke your skipper license:lol:.
You're suspended from commanding any submarine pending a full investigation into the matter after which you'll be court martialed.:dead:

yeah! speaking of weird placement ! last 2 missions it generated were doomed to fail!
Mission: Objective is here, sink it before it reach there.
Time for that enemy to reach this position: 3 minutes (exemple)
Time for a torpedo to reach enemy: 3 minutes !
See my point ? first time i tried.. I made everything (detection, tma, fire solution, firing) and 2.5nm before the enemy reach the location wich i was to prevent him to go the voice said mission cant be accomplished and she was still speaking when my torpedoes hit him!
Heh, I was sinking myself before Dangerous Waters was a twinkle in Sonalysts eye ;)
Fast Attack taught me never to turn a Mk48 180 on its course and then cut the wire.... :nope:

I shoot torpedo's at myself all the time - great for training on how to evade them (without looking at weapons control of course). Do a few hours of that - and see if you ever get hit by a torpedo again! hahahah:cool:

A good way to avoid shooting yourself is to try to bound what depths the enemy is at. If it's a submarine you can usually figure out if he's above layer or below layer, and then set a floor or ceiling so that you can get on the opposite side of it while the torpedo is running out. If you do this sort of maneuver, be sure to have another shot ready to quickly follow up with set assuming that the submarine will switch sides of the sonic layer. That way if he manages to sneak across the sonic layer to evade the first shot you can keep him on the defense.
In the case of targeting surface ships it's even easier, just set the floor to your periscope or snorkel depth. That will keep you safe from yourself.

Being in the 688(i), in all likelihood the torp you were using was on wire guidance, unless you did something like closed the muzzle door and cut the wire.
In that case all you need to do to keep from shooting yourself is simply use the weapons control panel to turn it around in the right direction, or, in the worst case just use the shut down button.
You only have a good excuse for shooting yourself if you're in the Kilo and the torpedo doesn't have wire guidance.

I have a very stable pc with XP full up to date. DW just crashed on me.. I was do the nimitz sinking mission.. I've been waiting an hour for the carrier to get to me.. I was flooding my tube and setting my firing solution. I was all set to do my duty for the motherland but the game crashed.. first time it happens.
It happens sometimes. Anyway this is hardly appropriate thread.
