View Full Version : GWX 2.0: Boy, you guys weren't kidding about aircraft.

So, just to get a feel for how things have changed in 2.0, I fired up the Academy missions.

Now, I'm used to taking a wee bit of damage in the flak exam---the occasional near bomb impact, nothing major. But when I fired it up in 2.0... within thirty seconds I had heavy flooding and my flak gun blown off. Within a minute, the boat went down with all hands. I never had a chance.

The GWX team has done a fanstastic job in making aircraft the bane of the U-Boat: from now on, I'll crashdive if I see a gull or an ominously shaped cloud.

Don`t remind me :D ;) I`am a huge fan (well sort of) of 23 Flotila and i can tell you i don`t have a Hapy times there even its still 1941.

I don`t know what to expect when i `am in the surface, i get under attack every 3-6 times during the day time. I force to spend many times submerged, and "prey" for a bad weather to use it as a cover and etc.....
-------------------------------------------------------

In the GWX 2.0 manual (the person who made it is a true artist) you can find a nice tips about aircraft atack envantion (sorry for my bad Ebglish). There are much useful in cases when the enemy is cut you with your pants down :D

Last time I ran the training mission, I went to crash dive immediately, hoping they would waste alot of ammo looking for me, and I could then surfce and finish them off.

Unfortunately, with so many planes in the air, half of them had mid air collisions, leaving me unable to fulfill the requirements to complete the exam.

But what realism?

I too had the same experience, running the academy missions to check out the new details, such as sounds and effects. Utterly shocked by the Flak exam :o

I fared best the first time, when stationary (previously not such a problem). Second, third, fourth and fifth attempts (before I gave up!) I went to ahead flank and kept weaving, but was destroyed in no time at all! They normally got several direct hits on the centre of the hull - pretty crack shots with those bombs!

I think the 4 men standing on the bridge here were the only ones left alive on the boat :rotfl:

73% but that wont change the ai setting in the
mission anyway.

its how you fight the ship not how you shoot the
gun.

try the same thing over doing the following

upon spawning in game.
hit ahead flank
hard left (or right) rudder
then just leave it go and
set the gun orders
man gun
target any type
target any aircraft
target at short range

dont make a single other move or order
other than designating targets from bridge
or working the damage control screen

post screenie.

nuthin to it.

Tried that too, with no great success either.

Pah! I'd rather die in the Atlantic than go out to the Pacific (especially in SH4 :p ).

I normally hope to pass the exam manning the flak gun myself, but once I did try ordering it manned by another crewman. Made no difference at all

I will be trying again later tonight - it's an entertaining challenge actually, and a good chance to practise damage control for when I'm in a career. In my old stock SH3 career I barely experienced any damage, and my GWX 1.03 career was only a few weeks old when 2.0 came out!

The aircraft AI is definitely one of the most noticeable differences in GWX 2.0, and it's a great one despite the newfound horror!

I think you can get exelent with the flak just becouse some plains are shot by other plains , this is a stock SH III bug !

I've never seen 2 Allied planes shooting at each other, but they do pccasuionally collide :hmm:

Yes Mush... That is a very old Stock SH3 aircraft AI problem/weakness.

The actual AI itself is hard-coded. The bad aircraft behavior cannot be modded to completely correct it.

Aircraft will on occasion run into each other... this is especially true where there are large numbers of aircraft in one area.

Your screenshot proves it in part... as it is not from GWX 2.0.

I will certainly grant you that its not Kpt. but I hadnt realized a limited
criterion honestly I just like the shot artisticlly and was responding
more or less directly to jims previous post.

that said if im following your statement the implication is that
the potential is still there when air units are in abundance and
proximity even in 2.0

interestly however its not unrealistic as art reflects life.

in my documentary on WWII Combat photographers the opening
credits hold an incredible scene similar to this screenie above a
forest somewhere in europe of two early P-51's colliding with
each other and immediately the forest floor thereafter as a result
of jockeying for position behind two Me'109s I think it was.

it was truly frightful footage and demonstrated both how and
how fast such things could go wrong.

it goes by so fast you have to run it slow to get the details.
but If I recall correctly I got it as part of my collectors edition
of private ryan so if im right many of you may have the sequence.

I understand. I was simply pointing out why that behavior is not a "GWX bug."
