View Full Version : I note a great deal of energy in SH3 modding

And much less in SH4. Perhaps the Devs should forget making a German patch for SH4 and concentrate on making an American sub patch for SH3. SH3 has legs that could take this old game quite far.

SH4 is younger, and probably has fewer owners. Besides, much of the energy from SH3 will probably make the switch when the uboat-addon is released.

I'm not really quite sure about that, most of the users who post on SH3 related threads have shown a dose of scepticism with regard to the SH4 addon citing among others the historical inaccuracy (Type XVIII in the pacific ??).

The 'Strategic Warfare' component smells of RTS more than WWII tactics used by the Kriegsmarine and the 'Historical Figues" seems to me like an attemp to include 'RPG' elements, besides the best known historical figures as regards the U-Boat war were in the Atlantic not in the pacific theatre.

It will be good to hunt allied tonnage from the SH4 engine, however i feel that the IJN Sub forces should have been included (or maybe that's a second addon).

Having said that as an owner of SH4 i will take the plunge and buy the addon when it's released.

An all encompassing mod which ports the SH3 game elements to the expanded SH4 and gives us a true global sub war which can be fought from both sides might be a far away dream or a fevered fantasy brought about by loving these two games too much but men are allowed to dream and other men make dreams a reality (modders with too much time on your hands take note pls)

Way ahead of you.:|\\ (Note that having too much time on our hands doesn't play into it... We've become undead from deciding not to sleep is all.)

In all fairness to the SH4 modding scene... To really sink the fangs into it in terms of modding... We've got to wait until the FINAL version of everything related to SH4 is released or we make MOUNTAINS of work for ourselves that will need to be remodelled every time that Ubissoft releases something.

No way, Jose. The cavalry charge doesn't begin until the barrage ceases if you know what I mean.

When everything official is out and released... Sh4 will be a "modder's heaven" to quote a friend.

for the most part people are just 'tweaking' this and that over in SH4. There are a few major mods out there for SH4 but nothing like SH3. I see no point in putting too much energy into it when Ubi says they're going to release an add-on for it :yep: After the add-on, no holds barred....

Has I allways said,

SH4 can be the perfect engine for the Future U-Boat War !:yep:

I can even imagine the GWX and even my Mod, some others around,
moded in a game with that Graphic and engine Potencial !:o

That will be the Ultimate Modding ground !

I suppose you're right about waiting for a FINAL version of SH4 Kpt,however it seemed at first UBI wasn't too keen on releasing patch 1.3 and out of the blue patch 1.4 comes out and the addon is announced.SH4 started life as a possible expansion to SH3 before becoming a stand alone game on it's own.Aren't you afraid that just when you thought SH4 is 'Final' a new addon comes out or better yet SH5 surfaces. After all the original Silent Hunter had two expansions (or was that three?).

Not concerned at all. After a well deserved long-ish break, we have plans to head for SH4 when the time is right.

I've had the fortune to see around one or two corners... and I'll say nothing more as I have no intention of burning those hard-earned bridges.

I'm sure you understand.

"A great deal of energy."

I laugh simply because once again I'm forced to remember a post from around two years ago stating that SH3 had dried up and no one was making new mods for it.

I hope it never stops, with the one possible exception of SH3 being brought up to SH4 standards, and then it can start all over again.:sunny:

May be it also has to do with the quality of game playing. The graphics might be way better in sh4 (i own both SH4 and SHIII), yet I relate so much more to SHIII. For a starter a U-BOOT is much better looking than any truck looking submarines in SH4, then there is something almost mystic that captures the imagination about U-Boot, that does not exist on SH4. Finally, you know the outcome of the WWII, so why would you enjoy playing a game that will end up in victory whatever your outcome, when playing U-Boot you know you will loose, yet you want to give a hard time to the AI, the challenge is bigger. May be those are part of the constant interest for SHIII instead of SH4:cool:

@Privateer: Damn I have to clean off my monitor again!:rotfl:

@biosthetique: To clarify, our plans are to port GWX (U-boat War) to SH4. It isn't a matter of IF we can do it, but when instead. The Pacific already has modders working on it... and when the two theaters are finally working in the same forum... big cool stuff is gonna happen for BOTH theaters.

When compared SH4 is probably in a similar place or perhaps maybe further ahead than where SH3 was a couple of years ago. It's not anywhere near GWX or some of the other larger mods in SH3, but it is slowly getting there :yep:

As well, there are a lot of great modders over there as well doing some nice things with the game.

That being said, it amazes me how much life SH3 still has, it has been a great game, and with 2.0 this is not going to change anytime soon.

That's true. There are modders who are looking to get the old sea dog to peform new tricks.

I would love to learn how to mod this game but my knowledge is limited. I've taken a crack at making a sub look ghostly yet the various textures in the game are making it difficult for me.
For now I'm enjoying turning out new sub repaints almost daily, but I've gotta hand it to the GWX team - they really know what they're doing when it comes to cool mods

The fundamental flaw of SH4 versus SH3 is that in the latter game your potential theatres of operation expand rapidly with Nazi conquest over the first couple of years and are then squeezed by opponents of exponentially increasing skill...it just gets more and more difficult as time goes on - in the former, however, the Japs never really get a handle on things and the only problem you face as time passes is finding pieces of their ever-diminishing merchant fleet to malkie.

To be really honest, I couldn't care less about commanding an American sub in the Pacific. I'd much rather see a simulation of Royal Navy sub operations in the Med or in Norway or Far East. The USN just doesn't do it for me at all, I'm afraid.

Cohaagen (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=234264) I have to agree. Last year I suggested that it would have made more sense making SH4 about the Japanese subs. They certainly had a lot to face. But the Pacific was mainly about big fleets and huge naval battles. Then there was the fact that American subs had major torpedo problems for the first year - larger than Germany did. So real American tonage sunk during that early period was pathetic. However I will likely finally buy SH4 and play it - when I get around to it.
