View Full Version : Hissing sounds when submerged w/2.0??

Regarding GWX 2.0:
Does anyone else hear a low hissing sound while submerged? It's not always present but when it occurs it seems to be quite apparent.
At first I thought it might have something to do with the amb_sub interior file. I changed it to Venatores amb_sub interior and still get the same hissing effect which kind of over rides the amb_sub interior sounds and they can not be heard.
I noticed while surfacing that the hissing sound went away close to the surface maybe at the time the sound files changed to deisel motors. Which file handles the amb-electric motors?
Any ideas?

SH3 sometimes loops sounds. This particular issue is not unique to GWX.
If it is persistent every time you load the game... It may be your sound card getting tired.:-?

Apparently, SH3 has several audio tracks playing on top of each other while submerged: the electric motors and amb_SubamrineInterior file. Both of which have what I'd call "white noise" in the background, especially the amb_SubamrineInterior.
I placed a totally silent audio file in as a substitute for the amb_SubmarineInterior file. As great as GWX 2.0 is, this in my opinion, seems to help reduce the hissing (white noise) while submerged. It would be nice to have an amb_SubmarineInterior file without noise in the background, just a few low voices, tools being used, bildge pumps being used, hydroplane motors, etc.
I've also used this same silent audio file to replace the amb_hydrophone file as well. This reduces the background noise and helps locate distant hydrophone contacts. If you cut your electric motors, you'll be amazed how much easier it is to pickup distant contacts. Now this might not be totally realistic but I just assume I'm listening with a pair of headphones that cut out all other noise.

Could you eloborate on how to do this. I'm a bit hard of hearing and often, usually in heavy seas the sea/wind noise will be so loud when I'm submerged at the hydrophone station it's impossible to hear contacts-one of my biggest gripes with SH3. BTW I'm still using 1.03 and I've got the louder hydrophone sounds mod enabled but still will not overcome the background noises

Kpt. Lehmann posted a mod within the last couple of months for the hydrophone hearing impaired. You can probably search for it and find it or maybe he'll post it again.
Kpt.'s mod included two things: a silent amb_hydophone file and another section to boost the hydrophone sound. The mod was set up so you could use the mod enabler included with GWX.
Now, I deleted the boost part of his mod and I only used the part that changed the amb_hydrophone to complete silence. Works great for me. One note: when you go to the hydrophone station while surfaced, you will have complete silence. When you go to the station while submerged, you will hear the electric motor sounds. I usually cut the electric motors to obtain complete silence and then rotate the dial to look for distant contacts. This really helps the low volume, distant contacts stand out.
Hope this is helpful.
Note: this silent amb_hydrophone file is the same file I used to replace the amb_SubmaineInterior. I merely changed the name of the amb_hydrophone mod to Silent amb_SubmarineInterior mod and changed the name of file within to amb_SubmarineInterior. Then put this new mnin mod in the Silent Hunter Mod folder and used the mod enabler to install.

I will be making a new Hearing Impaired Mod for GWX 2.0 probably by Monday or Tuesday.
Don't use the old hearing impaired mod for GWX v1.03... it will REMOVE some of the new sounds we've added like the whale song etc.

Thanks Kpt. I'd really appreciate it.
