View Full Version : Impossible to read a book while playing SHIII?

Leute,

The more I play SHIII (with GWX), the lower my TC gets. Now I'm trying to play a career at max. 64 TC. But I'm experiencing a problem.

While playing at max 64 you have plenty of time doing other things, eg. reading a book. I think this is quite realistic while the WWII Kaleuns also did other things whilst being on patrol (like reading, listening to music, sleeping etcetera).

Of course it is very important that when you're not totally concentrated on the SHIII screen, you are accurately informed about certain events like a message about a nearby convoy, a warning for radar detection, crew fatigue causing the engines to stop and so on. Problem in SHIII is that when these things happen you get a warning message only on screen. What I need is some officer yelling at me when something tends to go / goes wrong.

Is there a mod that can solve this problem? For clarity: I want a visual and an audible warning when a 'Funkmesssingnale' is intercepted, a nearby convoy is reported, a ship is heard by the sonar guy. Just like in case of a spotted ship or airplane.

I hope my problem is understandable and there's a mod for it. Also I'd like to hear other stories of people who play at low TC and how they do not get bored. Thanks in advance!

Since it has become possible to trigger and include new audio files, I'm reasonable sure there could be an audio message included for any time that the TC is deactivated. Something like "Alarm: Fliegerangriff" or "Rauchsäulen am Horizont Herr Kaleun" (like in good old AOD).
We just need someone to do that. Basically I think it's a great idea. Especially on the long and sometimes tedious Atlantic crossings I sometimes wish I could leave the computer alone for a while. Nevertheless I would never go down to TC 64x :)

Sometimes i play the whole day at TCx1, sometimes over night...
There´s so much you can do meanwhile:

- reading a book (i often do that)
- got more and more coffee (especially when hunting a ship or a convoy, don´t ask why). I know from different books and storys from that time, that a crew have always strong coffee on the bridge while hunting (called "Mittelwächter", extra strong).
- do the dishes (that´s why my wife don´t complain so much while i play)
- in the overnight play.... "Flugzeug in Sicht!!!" jumping out of bed, run like hell to order crash dive
- fall asleep again, listening to the engine roaring, endless same old song...

One day i was too deep in dreams. The wakeup call was a intense drumfire from all sides. I "managed" to slip into a convoy in bad weather. Lucky me the merchants doesn´t have guns in 1940...
Passing the outer protection (a V&W) was the end of my beauty sleep :D and of the boat too...

You see, i´ve the same "problems". If someone can do some audio for the critical events you described... i would use it forever.

I'm actually running a patrol @ 32 TC at the moment and the only way to confidently leave the game running while doing something else is to set the major TC settings to 1 in SH3 commander.

Might see you through until a sound mod is made.

Seems there's no such mod around so I will try to make one. In fact it should be enough to get some warning everytime TC drops to 1. Some general warning like 'Herr Kaleun, aufwachen!' or 'Herr Kaleun, komm sofort hier!' would be enough. Maybe it's even possible to make different warnings for different events.

Maybe somebody knows in which files I should look or someone have some other tips?

Sounds very good: in case you really come up with something like this I'd be a happy "customer".

(BTW: it's "komm sofort her" which, however, would be a rather unorthodox way to address your commanding officer. Something like: "Captain. Come here! Pronto!" :) I like the first one better.) I guess on a German boat simply addressing the captain by rank would have sufficed to get his attention. So simply taking the existing soundfile for "Herr Kaleun" might already do the trick.

Would be a very helpful addition.

I also play on slow TC - no higher than 32 at any time.

I love to read, do dishes, drink coffee, and sometimes snooze while on patrol - I would LOVE a mod that gives an audible alarm when the TC drops to 1.

I also use SH3 Cmdr to put TC at 1 for any critical event.

I currently get an audible for a Radio Message, and for an airplane sighted, and for ship sighted as well - so I don't have a whole lot of issues. I don't currently get an audible for a sonar contact - although it does slow to 1 TC - but I have to look up and notice the clock has slowed.

At any rate - I would love to be a customer, if someone could make such a mod for us old hands who play on slow/no TC.

Thanks guys, just wanted to add my voice, good luck!!!
