Hi there,

Was lucky enough to be able to download GWX 2.0 on Sunday evening and had a little time to test it a tiny bit yesterday eveningfor about 6 hours. Please note: these are observations I'd like to share in order to verify whether my perception is corrrect or just clouded due to the use of non-GWX mods previously used by me. I'd also appreciate any advice from the GWX team in case they have any ideas to my findings and observations.

1.
Thanks a ton for including the slideout compass. It's been one of those tools I sorely missed in the last GWX versions and thus had included myself.

2.
The damage model of the player uboat seems to have been tweaked a lot since GWX 1.03. I ran aground pretty hard yesterday in shallow water and had some real problems getting flooding under control and lost it in the end ...
After that I started over and bumped my boat on the concrete pier several times on purpose, effectively sinking my boat after a few minutes. I also was once attacked at PD by a destroyer in late 1943. One of the cans hit straight on and my boat was gone. I also once encountered a Captain class frigate on the surface in the fog. She strangely enough didn't shell me nor tried to ram me but threw depth charges at me while passing. One of which hit my foredeck and send the boat to the bottom almost instantly. Killing the deck crew first.
Flooding seems to me very fast. I didn't use any mods before to change the repair times, so the change is rather hard on me here.

3.
Loading times and game speed seems to be at least as good as with GWX 1.03. I had no significant drop in FPS. On the contrary! In harbors I previously maxed out around 16 while with GWX 2.0 I routinely come up with 18. Also in high time warp (4098x) I previously maxed out around 3 and now have 4 fps. Very good!

4.
My previous GWX 1.03 careers all SEEM to be working. I reinstalled SH3 Commander and installed GWX 2.0 from stock SH3 1.4b without deleting the old careers and just tried starting a new patrol.
- 02/1942 career based in St. Nazaire with a Typ IX B: check!
- 11/1943 carreer based in Penang with a Typ IX D2: check!
- 05/1940 patrol based in Kiel with a Typ VII B: check!
Worked out fine so far. In case I run into problems I'll keep you posted. This astonished the hell out of me, since previously it was said, that GWX 1.03 and GWX 2.0 careers would not be compatible. For those of you waiting to upgrade to 2.0 because they want to end their careers first I recommend: go back to port, backup the old careers and the GWX 1.03 installation, install GWX 2.0 fresh and try. Doesn't hurt to try. In case it doesn't work, you will only have lost a little time :) Just my 2 cents. In case you mess up your installation because you didn't backup correctly don't tell people I said you should do it :)

5.
There are also some mods I tried using which mostly consist of different textures used, like the "lite conrete mod", the "seafloor mod" or the "torpedo damage texture mod" as well as a different loading screen. As expected they all work fine.
I found out however that GWX 2.0 got rid of the complete texture folder. With some of those mods mentioned above the folder will be "resurrected".

6.
As I suspected most changes are below the surface. There's some real eye candy for sure, like the add on ships and the completely new planes, but of course the "wow" effect like with the harbor traffic mod or the Kiel canal is not there. Don't get me wrong. It doesn't have to be. GWX 2.0 isn't a completely new mod but it polishes up almost everything that was good or even great in GW 1.1 or GWX 1.03 and adds a lot of new stuff that you have to search for a little.

7.
I use a certain mixture of mods I created for personal use from several mods, including the "favorite dials mod" by Poor Sailor (in fact a mixture of FLB Sales's 6 dials mod and NYGM's TDC mod) as well as textures and changes for Church's changed OBS periscope. It seems to work very well also, however it of course will completely change the GUI during gameplay. However since the most important thing added by GWX 2.0 in that respect was the slideout compass, and since this same compass is included in the 6 dials mod, it shouldn't be a problem. As I said: experienced no problems so far.

(http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=109214&highlight=%22dials%22 Favorite Dials Mod Link)

8.
The planes look just great. I remember my last GWX 1.03 patrol in Penang when I looked at the Arado circling me and thought "ugly little bastard" but the Japanese GWX 2.0 equivalent is a real beauty. Thanks there as well. :)

9.
One question about all the AI submarines: in the manual it states that the Typ VII and Typ IX AI boats are not capable of firing the deck guns and only operate on the surface. IIRC in GWX 1.03 there were AI subs that attacked on the surface with deck guns and were scripted to run submerged, however couldn't dive or surface by themselves. Since I haven't encountered any AI subs at sea yet in GWX 2.0 I ask myself: has this been changed and if so: why?

So that's about it for now. Let's hear what you've found out.

The problem with saved games is that SH3 save system is cumulative, it saves data from previous patrols, In a lot of cases you'll have no problem with old saved careers (specially if you where using GWX 1.03), but if you have a save game wich has a unit not included in GWX 2.0 it will certainly result in a CTD, as it's a per user case, we can't assert that old careers will work on GWX 2.0 so to avoid problems we recommend doing a fresh install, but it doesn't hurt to try, if you're lucky you'll be able to continue your old career.

Woof, Ref,

No problems will encountered if you start an old career in port. Just the "in patrol saved games" could be problematic.

Thx Rubini.
The on patrol save games become a problem any time you change anything more than a texture. That's been a problem from the beginning. But it's good to know I can upgrade more or less safely without having to start from scratch. After all I haven ammassed 30.000 points in renown in order not to get my XXI

Yes it is possible, but we made it rare in occurrance. In real life, torpedoes did not usually cause enough damage to rip a ship in half. Most of the time, ships sank in one piece due to flooding.

Yes. I have seen one of the British BB's roll over in the "Bismarck" single mission in GWX 2.0.

It is uncommon, but it also happens.

According to Kapt. L., my download of GWX2.0 is broken. I'll have to find out which part, and re-download.

-EDIT- Just ran the MD5 check, and all parts, including the .exe all check out.......interesting.

_edit #2_ To answer your question, both "t" and "s" have an engine room blowup after roughly 5 seconds of viewing, and start leaking air and oil. Noby else seems to be having this anomaly. I'm not complaining, I just thought it was an "easter egg" or something.

Still on about the 'exploding subs' I see. We've checked out the matter and found no problems. Please see the following link for video of the problem report investigation. Video made by danlisa.

I'm not "still going on about it", merely answering a polite question.

I have seen the video and am not disputing it, however, everything checks out from my end too. I'll try disabling some of your options and see if anything changes.

I'm not complaining by any means, just thought at the time that it may have been an "easter egg" of some sort.

_edit_ I've disabled the "enhanced damage effects" mod, and now I don't get the explosion, or the leaking air. But a diesel leak still shows, eventually.

No worries d@rk51d3.:D

Well, I think we've established that it's not happening to everyone. I can also assure you it's not an 'easter egg', although it would be a cool one. Wish we'd thought of that. It'd be very cool to see the explosion effects of all ships after some time in the museum.

What I can assure you is that it is unlikely to affect your campaign. Strange & funky things can & do happen in the museum as it has completely separate settings to the fully loaded game.

Carry on, sink em all.:arrgh!:

Strange thing - Was making periscope observation and two destroyer shadows (reflections) appeared on the surface. No ships, just reflections of them. Nearest vessel was 2k meters. Went to external view and the shadows were still on the service. No wakes, no ships - just shadows moving away. They had gone on each side of the scope. Tried to recreate it but couldn't. Really eerie.

Hi all
talking about first impressions, I already shared mine in the locked thread, with some questions too, immediately before the depth charges started. So here's my updated first impressions again.
1) I sorely miss the direction "tail" on objects in the tactical map, it's awfully hard now to tell where I'm heading.
2) Compared to previous GWX there's a number of strange things in the high seas, for instance, every time I'm about exiting Wilhelmshafen I encounter some amphibious Me-109s - half submerged in water desperately trying to stay afloat.
3) On forays into Lerwick sub base I found that it must be guarded by the stupidest skippers in H.M. Navy, as the three destroyers guarding the harbor are all run ashore.
4) They do have some brave British sailors though, as they still man the deck gun of the submerged S-Type, just like the bridge lookouts who look out for fish 10 yards below the surface. Even after their boat gets a Type II topedo right into its tower. They must be desperate to get a Victoria Cross or something.
5) Time compression has been altered such way that I can't go above 8 or max 32x in shallow waters or when contacting the enemy. This is bad. It is a kaleun's fundamental human right to crash his boot with dreimal wahnsinnige against the shore at 1024x compression.
6) Whenever I try to sail out of Wilhelmshafen with my freshly shaven crew, I get a CTD. Given the endless loading times, maybe it's a bug planted by my wife to make me give up playing. Maybe I should, coz GWX2.0 seems the last drop squeezed out of the game which I have been playing for more than two years now...

It sounds like at least some of your problems may be being caused by saving and exiting whilst too close to a harbour. This is a stock SHIII bug that is well known and reported. What happens is the ships in harbours lose their waypoints and sometimes they crash or run aground cos they just carry on in the direction they were saved at. This behaviour is not related or introduced by GWX.

Your CTD however we would like to investigate. Can you advise what boat type, what year and month you are leaving Wilhemshaven? It may be a bug but given the testing we did it is most likely to be a currupt save game.

Although I haven't had the time to check everything, what I have seen I am enjoying! I've just started a few of the single missions, and thanks to the Grey Wolves, I now have a song stuck in my head, that goes like this-

"Ice, Ice, Baby!" LOL

When I first started the mission, my orders were pretty clear. We would be starting out SW of Iceland, weather was not good to begin with, already raining! We should also be on the lookout for icebergs as the mission progresses. A small convoy would be our target.

So I started out, we were running on the surface. Cold as heck, rain falling, and as I look at my Watch Crew, everyone is wearing regular uniforms, no rain gear! My first thought was simple-

"BERNARD!!!!"

That knucklehead never handed out the rain gear, I swear, when I get back to port, I'm transferring him to the Army, on the Russian Front. He can dig trenches around Stalingrad until the war ends for all I care!:rotfl:

Like I said, having a great time, and really appreciate this wonderful mod! And to the "Wolves", don't let all the gripping about this and that get to you!(From what I've seen on other threads) The computer gods created the uninstall button for a good reason!

And to the "Wolves", don't let all the gripping about this and that get to you!(From what I've seen on other threads) The computer gods created the uninstall button for a good reason!

eddie

Just to let you know mate, the crew not changing to bad weather gear automatically is a stock bug. You need to send your crew below... and then back up to the bridge again to see them switch to bad weather gear.

Try it out and you'll be good to go.

SH3 is quirky... but not so bad.

It's getting even worse...
In SouthAfrican sea, I ordered my crew to bait with pieces of tuna for 48 hours but... we haven't seen one single GreatWhite ?!?

Is it GWX2.0 bug or they will get hungry in 1943 ?

umm, no sharkses in there, no my precioussss...

But if they were the reason they've ignored you would be:

they are above mere pieces of tuna, you'll have to dangle something significantly larger from the back of the boat.:hmm:..Bernard comes to mind  :arrgh!:
