unless you get really close (ramming ships is no fun) the auto targetting of torps ends up with 95% of the time your hitting props and rudders of ships at 1000 range or more if not seeing the torp pass just behind the target.
im not sure what is the best "fix" for this, maybe increasing the torp speed or adjusting the targetting point but it is something i wish could be corrected.
im not talking about ships speeding up or manuvering out of the torp path, thats just part of the game but it appears the average targeting point seams to be aiming for the stern rather than midships.

Webster - this was a problem early in SH4 - are you fully patched? I think 1.2 or so was where they fixed this - had to do with drag of the torps I think. Alot of autoaimed shots were missing aft or barely hitting.
Remember that autoaiming - if you Lock the target - the point of impact will be roughly the center mass - barring a turn away, etc.
The other question is - are you using steam torps? You answered this sort of - but still - if so - 1.4 added the ability of the AI to see and react to the incoming ordinance - meaning the AI will often speed up and turn - resulting in an aft hit or clean miss. This is realisitic - would you just keep going straight and with the same speed seeing a high explosive heading toward you?
To avoid this - use electrics. However - they are not available in the early years of the war, so if your using autoaiming - try aiming at the extreme bow of a ship and see if you have better success. Easiest way to do this is to put your scope so its not quite got the target in it - no little triangle - as soon as the triangle showing the target is "in the sights" - fire. Also remember to set the speed to high on the torps, and make sure your outer doors are open before you fire.
If you dont have the outer doors open - your looking at up to a 3 degree off angle when you fire - more than enough to see what you are seeing. Always, always open outer doors a good 5 seconds before you fire if possible.

well im running stock no mods version 1.3 and yes they did fix this in the patch but it is not fixed accurately enough in my opinion.
it should be targetting just forward of midships because a ship can speed up but it is almost impossible to slow it down quickly so the best probability of success would be to overshoot before you would undershoot the target.
if i have to be under 600 range to not miss then im better off reinforcing the bow and just ramming the ships. you should not be constantly missing at a range of 1500-2000 when your sub is still undetected.
