Is a playable Japanese sub campaign even possible? I can't even imagine the amount of work that it would involve. I think the biggest problem would be making the actual Japanese sub models. At least the interiors could be borrowed from the American subs.

One possibility would be to make a fictious campaign, where the japanese actually managed to raise the first USS Sealion(SS-195) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sealion_(SS-195)), and put her into service as an IJN sub. A bit far fetched maybe, but not as far as a type XVIII in the pacific :)

It would be possible. BUT!!! The 1st things you have to ask yourself when considering it are:

1. Do I need 3d model of the submarines I'll be commanding. If the answer is "no" you've just saved yourself a ton of work. Tweak and rename current US subs to specs used by specific IJN sub classes and you're part way there.

2. Do I really want to create a campaign? Creating basic campaigns are really more of a pain than anything once you get a feel for how things work. It does take a lot of time--huge amounts if you want it done right.

3. Enemy AI: All the sensors for Allied esorts would have to be checked out if you want accuracy. All the Allied escort vessels as well would need thorough checking and testing. really not such a bad job until you begin to find problems :shifty: ... And consider these sonar types: Type 123, 128, 144, 147, QCe, QCa, QCg are active sonar systems used by the Allies in WWII. And that's just active sonar. the list for radar systems is longer. All need to work.

4. I'd like the challenge and option to do what you're asking BUT (another one ;)) I know that it would likely be a suicide ride. IJN Submarines that were most likely to survive are the ones that hid. Agressive ones were dealt with teardrop dc's, Hedgehog, Excellent sonar, Ubiquitous Airborne radar and..... Not many located IJN submarines had a chance from 44 on.

In short--it's serious buggar that someone may attempt/do at some point. I think all the nessecary elements exist in the sim to make it a reality. Just please don't ask me to do it ;).

IJN donīt use his submarines in ofensive role like germany and U.S navy, and a lot of the missions was supply isolated islands as a desesperate tactic against the success of the U.S boats.

But could be interesting a campaign with the japanese navy , or using the future XII from the addon in the pacific :88)

It's possible now, but as you say, a lot of work. I have some hope that the add-on will add a dialog in front of the normal campaign choices allowing you to pick which country you wish to play for first.

Making the subs, etc is certainly possible :yep:

As Peto suggests the campaign will take some work. Personally, I ignored the allied forces pretty much since the surface (or CV) engagements are pretty horrid, and impossible to properly script so that the right ships sink (what's the point of setting up the battle of Savo if all the IJN ships get sunk, or even if it's not close to the real results?)

So for an IJN sub campaign, all this would need looking at.

I suspect that when the SH4 Add-on comes out, a Jap sub could replace one of the German U-boats since you would be using an Axis sub. Since the Add-on has an Axis sub campaign included, it would just have to be tweeked.

CB already made a Jap Sub as a replacement for the SH3 IXd2, so the exterior model is already made, just need to use a another interior model for the Jap sub.
