So...bout a year ago i used to play lan games, y'know the type where you run around mowing everything down with a bfg.Drink alot of beer and have a fantastic time...or so i thought. So the one sunday i went to pick up my machine after leaving it at a lan session and spotted my friends SH3. He told me to go ahead and take it, cos i was'nt his "thing".So nursing my head :damn:i went home and installed it, foolishly hoping for a few hours of something different. OMG, to say i was blown away would be a drastic understatement.
It had everything, and more, graphics, gameplay and even strategy, something i have find lacking in alot of these"i can click faster than you" games. I was floored(hangover notwithstanding).Needless to say monday morning saw me still awake, and a very unwilling worker at the office, my mind was somewhere in the atlantic

.And it did'nt end there... After a few (alot)careers i thought i would look on the net to see if anyone else was still playing a game that was supposedly "old".Maybe there was an add on (yeah i got that medditeranian caper thing).
Found this site called sub sim.Well you probably know the rest.

Skins,sh3-sh4,GWX and too many to mention. It is unbelievable.

Here i South Africa we are charged per meg (of download),and it's hellishly expensive, and capped, in fact downloading what you guys give out for free actually costs more than the games. But it matters not.So where did all that lead me, well i now have the revell1/350 model sitting pride of place on my shelf, a shelfload of submarine books and documentaries and the regulation directors cut das-boot.

And to top it off ,a neighbour in my block, just happened to be a captain of a South African navy submarine(retired).was gonna try blag a tour on them but we just got some new ones,so tourists are frowned upon. Give em time... give em time...
This game ,guys, just keeps getting better and better, and just when you think ya got it figured out that realisim option goes up a notch, and you're back on the atlantic bottom wondering, just what Bernard did.:damn:

So, my modding skills are right there on the bottom with me counting fish, however i am making a new begining movie screen(i am an animator) which mebbe some of you will like, a kinda thanks.:up:A couple of days.rendering takes forever.(PS:is there a way to change the static load bar screen with an animated one ?).

Guys, all who have worked so hard in making this a truly exceptional game, i humbly Thank you Thank you. Thank you.My one arm was geting bigger from all the lan games and the heavy bfg, now thanks to your efforts, my brain is getting the same treatment. Neal, of sub sim thank you for this site.(ps how do i do a donation as we don't have pay pal here, hell we only got electricity yesterday.):DJokes aside, thank you.Its brilliant.
Thor.

Welcome to the club mate. I know what you feel when I discovered simulation world in PC years ago. Now my brain is more wired because I play smart simulations. Never knew games can lead you to become smarter, picked up new hobby, learned history and such and such. I look in utter disgust at shoot em up and click fest games now even if they have gorgeous graphics. Idiots...:know:

We are all singles or soon to be divorced...we spend too much time on SH3(maybe just me?), just the other day I forgot my name. I thought it was Gunther Prien LOL.

There's a certain attraction to this game, it's pace might not be for everyone. That's alright. Doing mods takes away alot of time from it but the work you'll find explains it all.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.A technical question,i looked through the movies folder(under data) and i see them there(the original and GWX1.03 start screen)under /intro. But therare other folders there, one says missions, the other /backgrnd, with a back1.bik file in it.
What are the extra files for? What is a bik file and how do i open it? Is there any way to change the static loading screen with an animated one(reson is it takes a while to load on my comp, so it gives me eyecandy whilst waiting).:)
cheers

welkommen!
from Kapstadt nonetheless.

the non-static screen idea sounds viable, but one thing i hear a lot around here is
"it would just take longer to load"
i usually read a good book, or play guitar
(i made a goal to ply guitar while im waiting for things to load, and i can play metallica like no big deal lmao)
well...thats all i have to say, someone prove my opinion wrong!
