Hey guys,
I am in the middle of a really crappy patrol...I have two torpedoes left and only 4800 tons sunk. This patrol is just going CRAPPY!
However, it got me to thinking. I am new to this game and do not have much advice to offer about patrols, and I was wondering if some of the more experienced players could lay down some rules/guidelines that they use when patrolling and tips that they use to navigate/move the 'boot? What are some things that you guys do on almost every patrol that a new guy like me would probably not know about?
The first thing that I can think of is the snorkel....I had no idea there was one until I printed off the QRC. To raise/lower the snorkel, press X. It can allow you to reduce your C02 emissions...but you need to be near the surface!
Any help is appreciated.
Know the feeling, I may be getting more kills than you but every time I get near something with a gun on it, I die...quickly.
I think I'm just going to avoid convoys until I get to France and stick to deck-gunning lone merchies.
err, ok.
i'm not too hot, so here we go.
when travelling long distances keep speed to between 7 - 10 kts : conserves fuel.
promote hydro guy if a promotion is available when you get back: improves his listening skills.
when you first leave port and get to deep water put your boat through the mill - test it out, everything; flak gun, deck gun, different speed settings etc, all systems that will affect your patrol; if you have sh3 commander sabotague/malfunctions enabled something may show up: so you know what to do when the sh** comes down.
(this is one of my own.) i put my hydro guy in rest quarters when not submerged - he gets the special treatment; i want him and radio guy as fit as a butchers dog. so i put a couple of fit petty officers to work instead.
make sure you've got some well trained flak/deck gunners at work. they can be right off target if they are newby's.
also, a top class watch crew: try to maintain full green bar above them. sign up a couple when in port.
at this point i have run out of ' things...'
don't lose patience aaannnddd, don't save your game underwater !!

Well lets see.............
first off dont be intimidated by the enemy they arent as fierce as
the mind makes them and they have there limits. Doctrine had you
deep dive and go quiet to avoid escorts but a submarine at periscope
depth can be a slippery and dangerous target if conned well.
first off if your that new the basics.
speed effects range in all conditions.
if using the deck gun shoot at the waterline from
middle distances.
as in the real world you fight like you train work on a good
balance of crew qualifications.
its a good idea to learn to shoot manually even if you shoot auto
as it gives a better understanding of whats involved and teaches you
trigonometry stretching your brain and thereby making the roads a safer
place.
there are common lanes for ships as you surely must know by now.
the good hunting grounds are where multiple lanes converge.
beware of aircraft they will keep you down and call for back up.
limit your prestige consumption in career by the path
type VIIB // type IXB // Type XXI
and limit your redundant spending on equipment as
your crew is the most important element in ship efficiency.
Practice.
read the forums most things are posted already about eighty times.
most important of all read the relevant manual to your version in full
and utilize forum search prior to posting questions.
Good Hunting.

I would recommend you do the following:
1. Build your own “is-was” I mounted mine on a clip board gluing the base then used the screw and nut from a welding fillet tool to hold he next three layers of the “is-was”. I also glued a small rubber knob at the north position so I could swing the second layer campus around.
2. After every patrol complete a “War Patrol Report” there are many samples on the net. I keep these in a three ring binder tabbed by mission.
3. Buy a Nautical Slide Rule at your local boat dealership.
4. Download and install the 360 degree bearing tool. This is the only mod I use.
5. Hunting ships is much like hunting game. It’s an art. Identify, Stalk, Set-up, position, and shoot. When I first started I would save the game before each attach. When my tactic failed I would restart the game and try another tactic. The one that worked the best was entered into my “War Patrol Report”
6. When I first started I would spend a lot of time on just one tactic for example (Identify) I studied a lot on prop counts, sonar and radar operation. For (Stalk) I studied a lot on Course and intercept. For Set-up I worked on getting, being and staying ahead of my target and assuming a 90 degree angle to it early on including DRM, MRM, SRM and CPA For Position I tried to be between 500 and 800 yards for every shot. For (Shoot) I always referred to the silhouette book and set torpedoes as close to draft of the ship as possible.
Hope this helps…
Also, a little tip I learnt earlier on this evening
If you come across a lone Destroyer with passive sonar
1) Go to silent running
2) Go as deep as you can
3) Manually select your speed as 1 knot
4) Creep away
It worked on a C&D class earlier, who dodged the two TII torpedoes I threw at him, rattled me with one D/C run, and then proceeded to D/C the living daylights out of all the fish in the area before getting bored and wandering off.
Of course, if you're in shallow waters and an ASDIC equipped ship shows up...just...get away...stay WELL away...

all of us have had crappy patrols, that's just the way it goes sometimes. all of us was new to the game at one time so its ok to make mistakes but learn from them. and all of us have use different tactics.
I've learned to be a little more selective with the targets, its ok to let a little coastal merchant go by and save that torpedo for bigger things.
watch your fuel, slow on the surface is just fine, your up there mainly to charge up and get some air so save it you never know when you might need run to a spot to intercept something later on.
i like to have the aft torpedo room with electric torpedo's and use them just for war ships or when i have used up all forward reserved then ill use them up on lone ships i run into..
attacking something around a narrow straits that's heavily patrolled like near Dover for example can cause you to get swarmed with patrol craft..
convoys, i like to enter from diagonally in front and not strait on or from the side as i seem to be able to squeeze by the front and side escorts with no problem. once in i try to get by the first line so i can have a clearer shot at the bigger targets in side, ill shoot 4 and hope for the best then slip out back diagonally from the back of the convoy and let the escorts get tangled up inside the convoy. plot there course back out till i cant see them any more, surface, reload and set a course around them, re enter and do i all again.
while manning the deck gun put someone on the AA gun also you never know when a plane may show up
play and have fun and you will find things that work for you.
Never try to torpedo Passenger/Cargo ships when there are other targets about. Those things eat torpedoes for breakfast! Seriously, most ships sink after a single torpedo hit in anything but calm weather. Passenger/Cargo ships generally require 2 or more torpedos before sinking...
I think the Tommies use the Passenger/Cargo vessels to transport vital war supplies such as helium gas and ping-pong balls across the atlantic. They just do not want to sink!

Not only torpedos :damn: In genereal I need 1,5 to 2 times more deck gun shells to sink them during surface action as I would need for other freighters of comparable size.
Ok, only in 80%, the other 20% they use up the normal amount of shells.
To continue your list:
* helium gas
* ping pong balls
+ wood
+ cork stoppers
+ empty barrels
Imagine they would have naval guns? I suppose evil ideas to send them to the sea.
* Ready-inflated balloons
* Tyres
* Polystyrene insulation
* Balsa glider aircraft parts
* Lifejackets
... all vital war supplies you see. :hmm:
Right, just learnt an important lesson...
Don't try to sneak into Clyde, there's a very interesting looking structure up there with coastal guns in the middle of the river, but that's the not the problem. The problem is hardly anything under the keel and the fact that the little Armed Trawler they gave guard duty too managed to scavange an ASDIC set from somewhere... :hmm:

Let's see if I can continue the list:

*coroner body bags
*pool cues
*tennis balls
*doors
*roses
*Rubbermade containers

I would agree with those tips - follow these and it wiil leas to very successful patrols:yep: .
What can I add......
-When firing your eels at a ship, aim just infront of the bridge (any ship), and in most cases it will go down in one.
-If you want to fight it out with aircraft - be my guest, I always avoid them at all costs, as that way has cost me many careers, with me trying to outshoot a Sunderland:damn:
-As a way to save on eels, try to finish off lone merchants with your deck gun. (Just make sure that the area is clear of naval/air cover first.)

I am really hoping that the deck gun can really boost my tonnage. No longer will I have to use my flack gun to set a merchant on fire. On my way back to base last time, I spotted two Victory cargo or a combined 15,000 BRT....too bad I had to let them pass.

How do you check for air cover before you surface? Use the observation scope??

Used this tactic earlier. Had a V&W coming straight behind me after I got sloppy. Dropped down to PD, had the scope on him and let him get to 2k the fired an eel off. Slammed straight into his front and he sunk away! I popped back up onto the surface and let my crew giggle at him:lol:

i do that because for me it just seems like 9 out of 10 times i get most of my opportunities with a perfect set up on a destroyer from behind.
