**Released**

Depth Charge Drop Splash Warning v1.0 for Silent Hunter 4 v1.4

I made this simple little mod because in SH4 unfortunately there is no sound man verbal warning when depth charges are dropped into the water by enemy escorts. What this mod does is make the depth charge drop splashes fairly audible inside the sub when they are dropped by enemy escorts. This is only the first version and I tried not to make the splash too loud. Depth charge drop splash sounds from distant escorts won't be audible, but closer splash sounds will. Hopefully this mod will give you a little bit of warning when depth charges are dropped near you.

Sorry everyone that I couldn't enable the sound man DC voice warning. Damn thing is broken. Probably hardcoded. Hopefully this is the next best thing. Hope everyone enjoys it. :arrgh!:

Nice work nvdrifter, this should help make up for the broken DC voice warning. Thanks again

nice work
It's really a pain in the ass, there's so much thing your crew not tell you...! not to mention critical things. You sure it's broken though? I remember Leo was saying he was part time working on a mod to correct and fix all instances of all sentences that existed as sound files but weren't triggered in the game... He didn't complied about it not being doable, just that he lacked time with ROW

Anyway, that's a good solution as for now ;)

Nah, he put it in the back burner and concentrated on ROW. I hope he'll continue working on this one day. Provided his health allows it, of course.

If it proves impossible to get the crew to say, "depth charges in the water, sir" could the phrase be added to the beginning of the spash sound itself?

Or would that be annoying after a while?

Interesting idea.

I just have to say, i just tested this against bungo pete, and it works REALLY well. I really love this mod.

I did find one are that could be improved (if possible), is i noticed that the sound of the water being throw up in the air when the depth charge explodes (as if your view point was on the surface), is also audible once the depth charge explodes.

I noticed the same thing Ducimus mentioned. Maybe able to do a work around that by EQing the high frequencies down :hmm:. As far as volume--my vote is that they're loud enough--I might even turn them down some for my taste. that way I won't hear them unless they are Close (ie-in damage potential range).

Again--Nice job NV!!!!

Seeing this got me wondering too - does anybody know whether it was really possible for people in the sub (other than the soundman perhaps) to actually hear when D/Cs hit the water? I would have thought not, in which case there would seem to be no real reason to have a "D/C splashing in the water" sound, and I was thinking that maybe just replacing the "D/C splashing/hit the water" sound file with the "soundman saying depth charges in the water" sound file might do the trick. :hmm:

Wow. Thanks for all the great replies. :yep: Actually, I already did already make a version where the soundman's voice says 'Depth charges in the water' each time they are dropped. But unfortunately the voice fades and sounds weaker the farther away the drops. Also when wearing headphones the voice floats around from the direction of the drops. Sounds like a ghost's voice haunting the sub or something. Hehe. :p

I will try to go ahead and fix the other splashing thrown up in the air sound. Shouldn't be a problem. Will also lower the splash sound a little bit in the next version. Everyone agree with that?

Maybe you could just make another version Quiet/Average/Crankin' volumes. I've had good luck limiting splash and hiss noise using Audacity, just EQ'd the high end way down.

I'd prefer it a little quieter but could do it myself too so it's not a big deal.

This is a Great mod NV!!!

Ok everyone. Here is the next version for testing purposes. I labeled it alpha because this isn't the final version. Need everyone's opinions on this version. I am also looking at ways to re-enable the sound man voice warnings.

Also a big thanks to skwasjer for releasing his awesome SH3 and SH4 modding tool. Saves me lots of time.

Depth Charge Drop Splash Warning v1.01a alpha for Silent Hunter 4 v1.4

Changes in v1.01a alpha:

-fixed secondary sound problem

-splash sounds are now more muffled. Hopefully sounds like you are really hearing it while underwater now.

-slightly increased volume due to using muffled splash sound file

Just tried the new version and it works well. It doesn't give as much 3D info to pinpoint exactly where the charges are falling and I think that's good as the soundman would be too busy taking his headphones off to tell you what kind of pattern is being dropped . Although, I must admit, in your previous version I once heard them hitting all around my boat: I didn't even try to run :shifty:.

That said--this last version doesn't seem as "7.1" as the first was, which is fine by me. Again--Thank for doing this!!!

Well, I replaced the splash sound with the soundman DC warning without the voice fading. I set the limit to 300 meters. But it sounds a little funny when the escorts drop dc's in quickly close together. He repeats it quickly, too. Lol. I can upload this version if anyone wants to try it out.

Sound Officer DC Warning v1.0a for Silent Hunter 4 v1.4

This is a variation of Depth Charge Drop Splash v1.01a. What this mod does is replace the dc drop splash sound with the sound man's dc warning voice. I made it where the voice will be constant in the sub. Not fading or directional. I also added a slight pitch variation to his voice so it will sound slightly different each time he announces 'depth charges in the water'. Maybe more human sounding and hopefully less like a damn repeating robot. The pitch variable is only about 5%. Nothing drastic. The repeating voice warning may become annoying after a while because the sound man will warn EVERY time a depth charge hits the water. Multiple depth charges dropped quickly together will make the sound man make multiple warning announcements. Also, I set the voice range limit to 300 meters. Any depth charges dropped at a distance farther than 300 meters will not be detected or announced by the sound man. This mod isn't perfect at all. But hopefully it's good enough until someone can really fix the broken crew voices. Enjoy!

Don't know if this is the right place to ask but is there a way to play (or even edit) these dsd files (particles.dsd) in something like Goldwave (which I have) or another program so I don't need to fire up SH4? What do you use?

Anyway, I really appreciate what you're doing. These are great and were badly needed.

Thanks, Art

Now, isn't that a bit bizarre??? Your Sound Officer mod downloaded with no problem, but I keep getting ERROR 403 ACCESS FORBIDDEN for either of the two Splash mods.

I had the same problem with Lurker's MessageFix mod, and he finally had to do a direct D/L from this site.

I just hate getting FORBIDDEN! Makes me think maybe they're all after me. :nope:

I have for the first time, been able to run SHIV without desktop crashes and want to minimize the number of mods I install to make sure I dont have any more problems. I have not reinstalled the mod enabler. I assume this DC warning sound may be manually installed simply by copying the files to the appropriate folders. If there is a trick to it would somebody please let me know? Thanks! Joe S

My current patrol has me assigned to the Philippine Sea and the convoys have started using escorts - mid-'42. I'll get my share of DC's soon enough. :)

On my last patrol I had two destroyers looking for me, but I never heard them use active sonar. I went to test depth as soon as I fired my three fish at a freighter and ordered silent running. I was passed over twice, but they never pinged me or dropped any cans. They stayed in the area for a few hours before moving on.

01-10-08, 08:51 AM
No, it contains sound definitions, linking a 'name' to a sound-file and allowing you to set some playback properties. The 'name' can then be referenced from the other game files. For instance when a gun is fired, this file tells the game which file to play, with what volume, etc...

well I noticed the depth charge warning sound is actually a message issued by the sonarman so I found the sound file within the data/sound/speech folder instead of the sound root folder where the sh.sdl is located. Does that mean the depth charge sound is controlled by the message_so.cfg under data/cfg/ ? if so, how does the SoM_K_*, SoM_P_*, SoM_S_* files differ (do they mean at different depth locations? whats K,P,S anyways?) and how do you make it happen? thanks!

They are played at three panic states of the crew. IIRC. Normal, Depthcharged /pinged, damaged.

I am so glad someone figured out how to get those missing sounds to play! It was a big pest to me not hearing the steam and pipes breaking telling to take action!
