Right now contact reporting (1.3, I haven't had a go on 1.4 yet) is rubbish. You have to get very close and be on the surface.

SO.

Is it possible to

1. Increase the range at which you can report a contact to your max visual range

2. Make it so you have to determine course/speed yourself

3. Make it so a report can be transmitted from periscope depth (If this was possible - were radio masts attached to the periscopes?)

Also, so far when I have called in reports I have not seen any response. I remember someone saying planes from nearby bases would be dispatched, can this be extended to all nearby units?

Thanks.

Good idea (I suggested it, too, and a dev said they'd think about it).

The major problem is how the game handles such reports. In the game, you spot a convoy, then make a radio report, and get orders. That might have been true for the u-boats, but US subs would simply never have broken radio silence to report something they could attack. Such an action is contrary to their doctrine.

The orders you'd recieve for the whole campaign would need to be changed such that the game would only expect contact reports on targets you had already attacked, or could not get into position to attack. Not impossible, just a bunch of work.

That's why I think the range should be moddable instead.

How likely is it in-game that your report will be intercepted? From what you've said it sounds likely. Maybe that value can be increased too.
