I had lots of CTD before version 1.04, I had very few mods, mostly speech and sound. I suspect that the speech or sound mods may have been the cause of the crashes, so I am running a career without any sound or speech mods. so far, no crashes. I downloaded the ROW sound mod but have not yet installed it. Can I install in the middle of a carreer mission? Are there any speech mods that are safe in ver 1.04? The sounds and speech that come out of the box are really bad, driving me crazy. Thanks! Joe S

You can add the Sound Mod anytime, yes. You know, I'm beginning to get a sneaky suspicion about this...can you check and see if the sound mods you used and caused CTDs included the file sh.sdl? Since patch 1.4 added some new sounds, it may be that, since these are not included in the sh.sdl file, the game crashes when it tries to access those new sound files (FYI, that file is sort of the "sound mixer" of the game). If that's the case, then ROW Sound Pack isn't safe, either.
Try this out:
Find a sound mod that crashed on you
Check to see if it contains the sh.sdl file
Move it to, say, your desktop
Install the mod
Run the game and see if it CTDs on you again.

Thanks for the tip. When I loaded the sounds and speech I only loaded the files that I liked, which could be the problem. When I downloaded the ROW soundpack, I did notice the sh.sdl file in the package and realized that the presence or absence of it could be an issue, so when I install the ROW sounds I will install the whole package and see how it works. Still need some speech files, I like the Tun Silent Run Deep speech files but dont know if its safe to use them. Thanks! Joe S

You don't need the sh.sdl file for the sound mods to work, so your crashes prior to v1.4 have nothing to do with that. What I suspect is, with the advent of v1.4 and the new (crew) sounds it adds, using a version of the sh.sdl for 1.3 might lead to crashes. I don't know if it also controls crew sounds though, and I haven't installed 1.4 yet, so I'm only making wild assumptions here.

ETA: Hm...I just remembered that when I was looking through the lists of files altered by v1.4, I didn't spot sh.sdl in there. Which probably means I'm wrong.

The SH.sdl only controls the sound files located in the data\sound\ directory, not the speech files that are in data\sound\speech\ .
Furthermore, as far as i know the 1.4 patch didn't touch the SH.sdl, so there should be no problem in using a sound mod that comes with an edited SH.sdl which worked well with 1.3.

A confirmation from the man who has worked with that file means a lot. You can classify everything I said about sh.sdl file incompatibility as "Total Load Of Bull Droppings" :D
