Its interesting I had always assumed they were never added in simply because it opens up some odd can of PC worms with historical events, but I just took a look at some of the screen shots from SHIV and what do i see life rafts :hmm:
Would be interesting to see something like this in SHIII simply because you might get more of a visual indication of when that damn cargo is finally given up and is sinking.
Having said that I would much rather have AI fired torpedoes than 3 men in a leaky boat :rotfl:

Ah a shame perhaps, often its the lil touchs that really make things stand out.

The problems with Life rafts, as see them are several fold.
1st, and easiest to solve, spawning them.
2nd, and even in SH4, the problem of water washing through them!
If they can not be made to ride the wave properly, they become an eye sore.
I have not looked at them in SH4 since before patch 1.03 so maybe that's fixed?
3rd, they required animations that could not be done. Till now.
So you never know what may happen.

Try Racer Boys Sh4 effects for Sh3 gives heaps of debris etc...or Diving Ducks debri and flotsam mod there not lifeboats but good eye candy all the same

Both are very good work in thier own rights.
Neither solves nor introduces Life rafts in a realistic way.

what if we just made a random life raft as a enviromental object...sure, i won't appear when a ship sinks, but it would add a bit of realism to see survivors from your less skilled fellow warriors, given thhat your attacks are so deadly that none survive...

The appearence and disappearnce of anything in game is not a problem.
Life rafts are not a problem.
The problem that needs fixed is the fact that they flood
with waves!
Even SH4 fell flat on it's face in this area.
It seems to be a limitation on the Game engine in both SH3 and SH4.
The engine can not decide anything but above or below sea level.

but the sub and the ships are both above and below at the waterline.
is the limitation that the raft doesnt have a waterline designated as such?

You can't see the division.
Do a model small enuff, place it at sea level with an open hull?
Waves wash through it totally destroying any visual pluses.
The big thing MOST modders hate?
Being caught with our pants down around our ankles on issues like that!
In over 15 years of modding one game or another?
Never been caught wth that bad of a screw up.
That's why I wouldn't do a lift raft mod.

O! So...you're saying there were never life rafts in real life?

Na me thinks privateer is saying theres no provision for life rafts in SH3 that work or are simple to mod into the game at present.

Yea if it can't be done to look good then it may not be worth the effort, having them appear only to have them look a bit odd in rough sea and sink would be a bit of shame.
Again someone may try in the future, i'd be curious to see the results in any case

Well, the thing about the lifeboats, and rafts, is that when, under a U-Boat attack, I would imagen that they would be lowered hastily, and sightly recklessly. To me, I would think that by accident, some water would have gotten into the little boat, I can definatley see why some would think it would look bad, but if there were a mod out there, I would have in a split second. I would love to have lifeboats in the water after a sinking, They don't have to be animated for me, they can just has a few people sitting of lying in them, and they can have a slow drift course. I would like very much to just have that!!:rock:

To see the water line problem, look at the image in this thread.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111622
Notice you can see the wakes inside the ship.
The water line always stays the same, you just can't see it.
I suspect that's why Sergbuto never released his life boat mod.
When I saw the life boats in SH4, I thought COOL!
Till I looked closer.
The water line problem just blew it for me.
Dont get me wrong.
It's cool they added them, but haveing the source code,
I'd think it wouldn't be that hard to add an if/else line here or there.
Spawning them is a simple task.

I have a liferaft model & accessories that are ready to be included in a future version of Racerboy's effects. ATM I do not know of a way to resolve the waterline problem that was mentioned earlier.

This one is looking great !
I wonder how a liferaft completely above the water surface would look? :hmm: Is it to unrealistic, like a flying carpet?

has anyone tried to increase its basic mass to change its behaviour?
I found that mass effects a lot in the water when testing subs

maybe make an invisible box over the top, so it's a square but it looks like a boat, so it sims that no water can enter ??
