SHIV recognition manual by FooFighters.
First of all I wanna thank WernerSobe for starting this idea !

This manual is completely redone, no more country based.
You can now choose a manual based on sighting and ships signature.

These new are the catagories :

* Cargo Composite (structure, wheelhouse and smokestack attached)
* Multi national merchant manual (original merchant manual with both Jap and US ships).
* Cargo Split (wheelhouse, smokestack are seperated)
* Passenger ships (passenger & troop transport)
* Engine Aft (smokestack on back of the ship)

IJN warships
* IJN Battleships
* IJN Carriers
* IJN Cruisers
* IJN Destroyers
* IJN Patrol

Allied warships
* US Navy warships
* Royal Navy warships

All japanese merchants are now called ... Maru. This makes it more challenging to ID a ship.
Also it gives a more realistic feel then sighting a jap huge european liner :P

Ship length.. In the mod there will be 3 choises of names.cfg :

* No length
* Length in meters
* Length in feet

Download versions..There are 4 released versions of this mod :
Please use the one the suits your game.

* Make shure you enable TM, RFB, RSRDC and ROW before enabling the manual
* CapnSurvy's manual targeting ship centered mod must be enabled after this mod.

FAQ

1) Is this mod compatible with patch 1.4 ?
- Yes, this mod is only for patch 1.4 (the patch changes the menu1024x768)
2) Is this mod compatible with other mods ?
- Yes, with ROW, RFB, Run Silent Run Deep, Trigger Maru 1.7, Manual targeting ship centered
3) The order composite cargo - multi national ships - split cargo is strange, why ?
- Because this is hard coded by the devs. It cannot be modded.
4) Why are japenese merchants called Maru ?
- These are the original Japanese names for the merchants.
5) Why can't I open the manual ?
- You have to click on the bottom part of the manual (near the letters STR)
- I enlarged the (original flag) picture, throught this picture you cannot open the manual.
6) When can I enable this mod ?
- Only during new campaigns or when you are in base. Enabling during missions in campaign mode can give CTD's !
7) Standard the mod comes with length in feet, How do I change this ?
- In the mod a map called support is added, open this one. Choose the length type you want.
Copy it over the one in : silenthunter4/data/roster/names.cfg
8) Can I use this mod with the museum ?
- No, It will give CTD's. If you want to view the museum disable the mod.
- Same goes for using the mission editor, disable this mod first.

Make sure you use the right manual version that correspond with your mods !

Might have compatability problems between RSRD / TM and RFB due to new ship's and clasifications of ships added to the mod's and some ships have changed names in some of them.

SO make sure when you release it it says what it works well with for game change mod's.

But other wise great idea buddy!

I have written and tested it with both TM and ROW.
Both RSRD or RFB mods have not been tested yet.

Will you please do a version when the pages are red-lit to aid night vision? White pages really affect your eyes when all else is dark. There's a mod that does this for the standard manual on the mod list page called "Even darker recognition manual".

Also do you take all your ship dimensions from JP's ship dimension fix 1.3? I'm unsure now which ones are more correct, TM or JP's.

I'll be happy to test too, though my PC is on the blink. I run TM 1.6.5.

I will take a look on the red-lit style..

As far as I know, the JP fix dimensions is included in all TM versions.
So you should be oke.

p.s. I will redo the cover color a bit because I have a CRT monitor at home.
The color there is more dark and greyish. Looks great.
Here at work it looks to green and well.. not so great.

I might have a crack at new pages at some point. I'm thinking I need to use Streamline to change the line art I have to vector so I can have them be clean.

I had also planned on dumping the various "extra" views of merchants entirely, they simply didn't exist in RL. You got an elevation line drawing, and maybe a plan view and a picture.

Note the "B" under the scale bars. That indicates that the data shown is just "OK." "A" would be it's very reliable. "C" would mean that aside from any photos, it's a total guess.

Most merhants have a "C" next to them in ONI 208-J.

Those are 2 I have done (I have many set up in the right way so far in work I was doing with WernerSobe).

The problem is the alpha channel to make them appear on the background properly.

What sacrifices are you going to make in transferring the real recognition manual to the game? I suppose if size is a problem there may be a way of enlarging the Manual onscreen using the menu files?

OR you could go the really realistic route and do a printable manual, that would solve all size and night vision darkness problems, maybe use screenshots from the game instead of the photos, as well as diagrams.

Though I suppose you would still have to dip into the in-game manual to send the mast-height to TDC, but then again if you are working on the printable version only you could simply turn the in-game manual into a scrolling list of just big names on the pages instead of pictures - which you select from after you've picked from the printed manual. That would leave you time to red light the pages maybe.

Just as an experament, I edited some screenies I had of Jap merchants to look like ONI ID manual photos. I tried to get them to look poor quality as many of the ONI images seem to be.

Will give it a go, Tater.:up: Quite enjoyed making those images.

Ill have a go at adding neutrality markings to the sides of the hull too, seems that that quite a few images show ships in these markings.

For some strange reason (devs?) my new manual also works in career mode.
Still some rewriting to do.. but so far so good !

I am using TM Enviro and RSRDC so I can test your current version if you would like.

I also like the external printable idea. I currently use a paper list that just has mast and funnel layouts as a reminder of mast heights.

I have been contimplaiting a printed version with screen shots of the merchants at 15 degree intervals to help with AOB estimations. That is my current biggest problem in targeting.

You can't manually dial in a perfect height as the rec manual to stadimeter system uses tenths of a foot and you can only get within a foot or so at 120 feet but it is plenty accurate for manual plotting. It also allows for other variations. For instance I have a hard time seeing the tips of the masts at long range. I can just use the height to the top of the funnel instead. You can't do that using the Rec Manual to input height.

Btw.. doubts about compability problems with campaign mod should be arbitary as long the old roster remains untouched. As far as i know foo is using dummy ships which appear only in manual not in game itself. They are basicly copies of existing ones. The campaign should have access to old roster.

The manual has been tested by different testers, there was just one small problem that has been fixed.

Release will be later this week.

I am now adding length for Japanese warships to the names.cfg files.
In the mod there will be 3 choises :

As shown in another thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126016), a more centrally located reference point such as a funnel can give much better results, partly because the mast do not show their heights properly in many situations.

Yes just an idea, modding is a hard job to fit around life. Thing is though there are something like 4 recognition manual projects going on at the moment. Seems like a lot of wasted effort to me when you could all be working together.

I do agree with you..

As far as I know there are only 2 working project atm..
Mine and the "manual targeting ship centered" mod.

Both are really different mod.
Mine is about the sections and graphic inside the manual.
The other mod is a solution on better range measurement.

My mod is compatible with that mod. Just do mine first and then the other.

Well theres the ONI recognition manual being done by someone and if I remember correctly someone else also is trying/tried to just reorder the manual into sections to make it easier.

The ONI manual has been cancelled some time ago.
I did discuss with WernerSobe about the posibilities of a rec ONI mod.
He also tested the manual.

The other reorder was (I think) my first manual, this eventualy became this one.

Try the SH4 stock + RSRDC manual. This one should do the trick.
The only small concern is the RFB part.
I don't know if this also adds ships like TM.

If not, you should be oke.

Had problems with the game looking for OBSperiscope_mask_1024.tga in the menu layout folder...performed a search of the SH4 folder and found nothing. WOuld it be possible to have this file from you Foofighter to allow me to run your mod? Hell knows where the file went to lol. Im running stock with ROW and RSRDC 1.4...only other mods are visual stuff and downloaded the appropriate file from you.

Thats really strange, I did not put it there. It has nothing to do with my mod.
What happens when you remove the data/menu/gui/layout/OBSperiscope_mask_1024.tga ?

I will release a new version with this tga tonight, just to prevent problems.
As far as I know it's just a TGA file with periscope lens.
Won't hurt the game, if it's in there.

Sorry for the problems guys, I should have noticed this.

I remember seeing that line (and the accompanying .dds file) in a mod that made the periscope lines green, for improved night aiming. Maybe you were using that mod and the .ini change slipped in but the .dds file was left out?

The problem with missing .tga file is because you have taken an already modded menu file foo. If you want something being compatible with stock, you should take unmodded files and work there. Because you never know what other authors have changed.

Its always easier to make stock-mods compatible with other mods, then mod-mods compatible with stock.

I used the menu ini file you posted as a fix...don't get the error when launching now...but got this instead...!!...anyways I think it maybe down to another mod...I copied and pasted, from the addional hud bar mod Im running , the line for the obs scope and it's working now...sorry to lead you astray mate.

Well done. Thanks for taking the time to do this. It's significantly added to my enjoyment of the game. Oddly, my last patrol was entirely in fog (SH3 flashbacks!) and the ability to make a quick and easy ID (vis was about 800 yards) after a 90 minute sonar set up was a Godsend.

Oke guys, here an update on the manual for RSRDC phase II.
I will be away for a few days so I do not have much time to test it.
Especially the version with TM.

I played with the stock version without problems.
The TM version is the same with some extra boats.

If you do encounter a problem just let me know.

- In the mod a map called support is added, open this one. Choose the length type you want. Copy it over the one in : silenthunter4/data/roster/names.cfg

Everyone -

On my 2nd computer, I went back to RFB RC1. I then installed RSRDC v240 (for RFB) over it, then the RSRDC v240 patch 1. After all that, I installed the RSRDCV3 rec manual version over all the above. Then took the boat on patrol, opened the rec manual, and flipped thru ALL of the pages during my transit to off Honshu. No CTD's. It works.

Thats right, most of them are silluettes of ships and the roster files.
Just enable this mod when in base.
If something should go wrong you can always remove it with JGSME.

If you use CapnSurvy's ship manual targeting mod, don't forget to enable that after this mod !

I used to use the old names of the marus such as huge european liner,large modern tanker,medium old composite superstructure freighter etc, etc with the "old aspect ratio", by finding out the new aspect ratio i could get my AOB. Would you be so kind as to give me a list of the new names you use along side of there old names:example: Hakitu Maru=medium old tanker

Because i have the "old aspect ratio's" for those boats. Thanks mate I love your new recognition manual. Forgot to say i only need the maru's not warships at all.

That's a good question.. I am using the maru names for about 6 months now.
But there a way to find out.

Can you please go to data/roster/names.cfg (open with notepad).

Please copy and paste the ships (sea) content in this topic.
I will fill in the Maru names for you.

That's correct. one of the problems when using several mods.
Here's how the fix it.

The cargo composite map is originaly the Japan map. That's why it shows up there.
All files can be found in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Roster

* First, copy the new (installed) files in the Japan map to the desired Foo manual map

Canadian = Battleships
France = Carriers
German = Cruisers
India = Destroyers
Netherlands = All other IJN patrol vessels

* Second, rename all new ships ID's in the japan map to 100

[UnitClass]
ClassName=CVShokaku
UnitType=100 <----------------------
AppearanceDate=19410808
DisappearanceDate=19441025
DisplayName=JP CV Shokaku

Then they will not show up in the Cargo composite map anymore.

Hope this fixes you're problem.

You sure they weren't talking about SH3? Your wepons officer in SH3 can do that, when you use the OCL Gui mod.

SH4:
Playing US Fleet boats, the ship type is identified in the "? forgot the name ? = the device at your top left side in periscope view", if playing with auto targetting on. One just has to look in the manual one self to find the ship.
Playing Uboats, one just has to double click "target" in upper right box in periscope view and the rec.manual pops up with the right ship, again with auto targetting on.

Hey,
yep, there is an easier and better way. Go and find the commands.cfg file in your SH-installation (should be in the CFG-folder IIRC, sorry, can't look it up as I'm at work right now ;) ). Open that file with a text editor and find the line where it says "Identify_Target". Should be command 343 IIRC. Right there you can define your own key to use for this command. I for some reason chose Ctrl-V. To do that, add the line

Key0=0x56,c,"Ctrl+V"
0x56 is the V-key, the following "c" means that it's supposed to be pressed together with the Ctrl-key and the "Ctrl+V" is just for your reference so you remember what your settings mean.

So whenever I lock a ship in periscope view I press Ctrl-V and my crew identifies the target. Takes a few seconds and the ship has to be locked the entire time. The ship type will automatically be entered into the TDC.

I hope this works. If not, let me know and I'll look it up at home tonight as I wrote this just from memory ;)

As for the future of this mod, last I heard of Foofighters he was getting married. And we know that modding and marriage don't mix well, at least in the beginning :rotfl:

Is it also tied to Cntrl-V as the hotkey? How do you get your crew to Id your targets?

I have looked around for the good part of an afternoon looking, and havent found anything yet. Is there a Recognition Manual mod that has the ship length's available for SHIV v1.5 yet? I would be even better if there is one out there with that and the standard aspect ratios pre-calculated. Happy torping all!:arrgh!:

I know PDF versions exist but I have me hearts set on an actual mod that fixes the in game recog manual.
