Umm...if they're cordless, how do they work?
Also:
Offer excellent insulation problems and the block out the light.
I think they might want to rethink their choice of benefits. :rotfl2:

Umm...if they're cordless, how do they work?
They have a small bottom rail that you just raise and lower with your hand, and then it stays where you put it. Sometimes there's a little tab that sticks out right in the middle that works like a handle, you just grasp that and raise and lower. At least that's how they work in the displays in the stores, so I'm assuming these will be the same. I just need something to put in the office windows so I can get rid of the frilly blue curtains and valance and block out that merciless late afternoon sunshine.
I think they might want to rethink their choice of benefits. :rotfl2:
Lol, I didn't even see that. I guess it should be "benefits" and not "problems." Supposedly these help insulate the room by capturing air that would otherwise get through the glass behind them although with these windows that's really not a problem.

I must be some kind of savage pagan vandal barbarian. I have one of everything. I bought a set of four drinking glasses more than a year ago, and I've never used them. I drink out of the oversized Santa mug my kids gave me 25 years ago. I have a few other cups I've collected over the years. None of them match. I eat out of store-brand cheap imitation tupperware bowls. I have two, one for cereal and the other for microwaving stuff in.
And I wonder why no one ever visits me.

I am so tired of cheap measuring spoons (and I usually keep 3-4 sets on hand) and cheap utensils that either bend or break or get all melty when you use them in the way they were supposedly designed to be used.
So I'm splurging on decent ones for a change, while I've got the money. :D

I'm the person who went to Lowe's to buy a shelf bracket and ended up spending $100. :haha:
Realized after I got home that I should've bought two brackets, and in the interests of my sanity and pocketbook ordered a second one from Amazon instead of returning to Lowe's for it. Actually I love most types of music to one degree or another. I got into the old stuff when a bandmate loaned me a huge amount of CDs. He really loved Mozart, and I started getting into Bach. When I got curious as to what came before Bach I was shocked. There were hundreds of Baroque composers, and before them came the Renaissance. Before that was the Medieval period.
My real problem is that I'm a completist. Obsessive-compulsive. If I like one album from a particular band I have to have everything they did, whether I like it all or not. I have to have it in the proper order, and it has to be dated. Once I started liking the Medieval period I had to start collecting everything I could. It's part love and part addiction. I figure if I hold myself to ten dollars per week or less I should be alright.

Okay so that's (IMO) a lot of money for a pizza cutter, but I've been through 2-3 cheaper ones and hated every last one of them. I have Zwilling JA Henckels flatware and it is AWESOME. But mostly I confess I picked this one because of the first review I read, which follows:
I sat there in the deepest reaches of my kitchen, battling the heat of the pizza. Flames shot out from the oven below nearly scorching me, ending my young life before I've had a chance to retire or finish the second season of Jersey Shore.
I saw it amidst the plumes of italian-seasoned steam now encircling me. Excalibur, blade of legend, delivered to King Arthur by a naked woman in a lake. Or was it? Was it possibly.. the Pizza Cutter I purchased from Amazon.com, which was delivered in two days due to my Prime Subscription?
I hefted the circular blades hilt in my hand; Yes, a force to be reckoned with. But, it may have been too late; with its polished aluminum exterior, glistening like the aurora-borealis, I saw them approaching from behind; children, in droves, and hungry.
For Pizza.
I pressed down but slightly on the golden brown crust and it gave way without any effort; "is this possible?", I thought to myself as I effortlessly cut through the pizza. Each and every arc of my hand was true of aim; no wobble like lesser blades.
And so the beast was quelled, and the horde of small ones were satisfied for but one more night. Excalibur, king of all swords, rests atop my counter in his throne of glory, ready to slice and dice any and all pizzas that come before him.
Any pizza cutter that can inspire something like that is worth twenty-five bucks in my book. :haha:

I like a bunch of different kinds of music. Classical type stuff hasn't been one of them. I always hated it because in Kindergarten the teacher would play it at nap time and it would keep me awake instead of put me to sleep. :O:
And there's the bigger part of the problem. The difference between Medieval and Classical is as big as the difference between The Beatles and Metallica. The difference between Renaissance and Romantic is as big as the difference between Chuck Berry and Green Day. Anywhere you look you'll find things you like and a lot more you don't. It's all in the understanding.

Yesterday I had my first bad time ever with Prime. I've been watching season 1 of Justified. An episode was just finishing up and rather than use the Escape button I moved the cursor to click on the Normal Screen tab. Just as I pushed the mouse button the show ended and it went back to the normal screen automatically. Guess what's right under the Normal Screen Tab? The Purchase Season With 1 Click button!
I called them right away and was told that they never refunded money for Prime Instant Video purchases. I said their policy made sense because someone could buy it, watch all the episodes and then ask for a refund, but why would I do that when I was already watching it for free? Also if I was going to purchase it I would buy the discs so I could see all the goodies as well. Of course that's only half true because after watching the first three seasons of Sons Of Anarchy for free I was hooked and bought the new seasons as they came out.
She was very understanding and said she would look into the buttons being in exactly the wrong place so that could happen. She also said that she would refund my money, partly for the reasons I mentioned but mainly because I had called within a couple of minutes after making the purchase, so obviously I couldn't have time to watch anything.
Anyway, once again the folks at Amazon show excellent customer service.

There's a local radio station that plays operas and classical music at night. I listen to it when I'm out at night sometimes. To a certain extent, I can listen to it. It's good, I'll give it that.

Here's a quick rundown.
Ancient: Anything Before Christ. Usually only fragments are left, written on clay tablets. It's almost impossible to decipher, but recreations of instruments are made based on found artifacts and ancient paintins of musicians. The music is mostly guessed at, based on what scholars think it may have sounded like. At least it's authentic as far as the instruments are concerned.
Medieval: A huge diverse range covering a period from AD 300 to 1400 - more than a thousand years. Sometime in the 200s a Bishop (whose name is known, but I forget) declared that church music should be sung without instruments. This led to a huge variety of chants. In the 300s Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, created the liturgy he wanted, dictating the type of prayer and the type of chant that would be official. Ambrose has an interesting history of his own.
In the 600s Pope Gregory the First ('the Great') did the same for the liturgy of the whole Church. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for us, the Milanese church rebelled and said they'd keep their own chant, thank you very much. The Church down south at Benevento said they would also keep their own.
Around the year 1025 a monk named Guido d'Arezzo put together several theories people had been playing around with and created modern musical notation. The first things that were written down were the Gregorian Chants. Fortunately they also copied down the rival Ambrosian, Beneventan, Cistercian, Corsican and the Old Roman Chant that predated the Gregorian.
It's fairly certain that minstrels with instruments had been active all this time, but unfortunately none of their work was written down, so almost a thousand years of singer-songwriter material is lost forever. In Moorish Spain, however, a lot of Arabic music was also collected and written down.
As soon as the chants were preserved in writing people began experimenting with them. By 1200 polyphonic chant (chant with harmonies) was being created in Paris. During this period secular musicians learned the new theories and began writing down their stuff, creating the period of the Troubadours. The main instruments were the lute (predecessor of the guitar) and the hurdy-gurdy, on which the left hand turns a crank which spins a big resin wheel while the right hand presses keys which push down strings against the wheel, creating a sound something like a viola. And of course they had drums.
They also had organs. There had been water-powered organs going back to ancient Greece, and in the 1100s the first pipe organs were developed. These were small instruments powered by a bellows. A helper would pump while the musician played.
The Renaissance is considered to have lasted from 1400 to 1600, with a lot of leeway, crossover, and arguments among experts as to what really happened when. This was the period of the Tudors in England - Henry VII, Henry VIII, Mary and Elizabeth I. It was the period of Columbus and the period of Drake. The coming of the printing press made music available for everyone, since many copies could be printed rather than copying each sheet by hand. Of course this was also true for books, but that's another story.
People in this period began experimenting with ever more elaborate harmonies. Large choirs were developed, and church music began to be accompanied by strings and brass horns. The first violas were developed in the late 1400s.
It was also around this time that the first harpsichords were developed, creating a whole new sound.
The Baroque period is conventionally accepted as lasting from 1600 to 1730. This is the period during which the large church organ became popular. It was also during this period that the piano was created. The Baroque saw the first operas. It was the period of names which everybody has heard, even if not familiar with the music: Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Teleman, Vivaldi.
Music in the Baroque era became more formalized, and rather than being hired players at various courts the composers began to become kings themselves, giving independent concerts and being increasingly famous.
The Classical era (1730-1820) saw the coming of large orchestras. It was the period of the American and French Revolutions, the era of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
The Romantic era (1815-1910) was the period of the American Civil War and the formation of modern Europe. It was the age of steam power and spans the era from the first trains to the first airplanes. It was the age of continued refinement in music, and includes such legendary names as Paganini and Schubert. It was also the time of growth for 'poplular' music (not music that's popular as we know it, but the music of the populace, or common people). Names such as Stephen Foster and Scott Joplin gave music to the average working person, and 19th-century folk music led the way to 20th-century jazz, blues and finally rock.
'Classical' music is still being written today, but it's not my thing either. Maybe someday.

Seriously, they do look nice. :sunny:
I have dreamed of a set of Shun knives for a long time. They sell them at Jungle Jim's and when my sister worked there she could use her employee discount to knock something off the retail price, which is... steep, to say the least. I looked at one of the paring knives once, probably the cheapest one of the line, and it was almost $100. Pretty sure the set I just bought has an MSRP of around $1500 and buying each knife separately might jack the total up even higher.
I have two knives from that particular line already, since my sister was getting them for me as Christmas presents, and I luuuuurve them. You can hold them up to the light and the blades are... whatcha call it... well, they have the markings in them from where the steel was folded over and over again during forging, like the blade of a samurai sword, they are just so beautiful. Striations? Anyway - SO PRETTY! Oh yeah and they're real sharp and cut stuff too. :O:
Anyhoo she no longer works there now so that well's dried up. :wah: I never even asked for them back when she was getting the discount, she just knew I wanted Shun knives and knew what pieces I could use the most. They're too expensive to ask for as a gift, I would just never do it.
So I've been watching this particular set - which has pretty much everything I'd want/use and don't already have, plus a block to hold them and the two I've already got - for a while now. The price has dropped a bit but I was mostly worried about the availability. I was really hoping to rack up more rewards points before buying and maybe pick them up in a month or so as a birthday present to myself but it went from 13 available last week to 5 available today and I don't know if they'll get more in stock, that line could be discontinued for all I know. So I bit the bullet and ordered them. I did have over $140 in rewards which helped some.
Already got the space on my counter marked off and saved for them. :D I suppose two knife blocks full of knives is a but much, but... I really, really like knives. :O:

No, you need to click the link from here before you do any shopping. The various Amazon links at Subsim will lead you to Amazon.com... once you get there from here, then start shopping - put stuff in your cart and then go through with the purchase as you would usually do. As long as you stay in the same browser window/session from the time you follow the link here to Amazon until you complete your purchase, anything you buy during that session should result in Subsim getting a small cut of what you spend.

I don't know how many people read this thread, but it was the only proper place to post this. When you buy something on Amazon you get a request for a review of the product. When you read reviews they have a button you can click if you find the review helpful. I tend to review most of the stuff I buy, and I sometimes get an email saying that someone has found one of my reviews helpful. I recieved one of those emails just a couple of minutes ago. I always click the link to see which review it was. In this case it was a short review I wrote five years ago!
Back in 2005 the computer I still use came with a 128MB video card. Three years later I bought one which doubled that to 256MB. All the review says is that the card seemed to work fine but I misjudged and still needed a bigger one. I finally ended up with a 1GB Radeon 4650, which is the best card I can get for an old AGP slot. I didn't review that card since I got it from NewEgg.
I'm still wondering why someone would find a review helpful that says nothing more than "it's okay, but I still need something better".

I HATE AMAZON!!!
Just when I think I have my budget for the month all set, they send me an email - "Two Days Only!" "Up to 58% off!"
Well, the 58% off was for the Blu-Ray set. I don't have Blu-Ray, and the regular set was "only" 52% off. Of course I couldn't pass up a deal like that, so I had to order it now.
Band of Brothers/The Pacific (http://www.amazon.com/Band-Brothers-Pacific-Special-Gift/dp/B005GYSV4M/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1378393514&sr=1-3&keywords=band+of+brothers) combined set.
WOOHOO!!
Of course now I'm worried that it might be a gimmick and next week it'll be even cheaper...

I frickin love The Pacific. Band of Brothers is extremely good too...but I think I like The Pacific more. It has a more "real" feel to me.
Plus, watching it with Turtle Beach headphones turned up all the way is the only way to watch the combat scenes IMHO. :yep:

steve how do you get a URL to display like that?
:rotfl2:
Laughing at myself because for years people tried to explain it to me and I just couldn't get it right. I'm hoping I do a decent enough job for you
First, type " [ url = " (without the quotes or space)
Second, paste in the url.
Third, place the second bracket " ] "
Fourth, type in the title you want, in my case "Century Classics"
Last, type " [ / url ] "
So:
[ url = XXXX ] Century Classics [ / url ]
Remember, no gaps.
You can also practice with no url at all, just by typing what I did with no gaps. It will create a link that doesn't go anywhere, but it will look right:
Steve Is Cool (http://XXXX)
I feel silly for not getting it for so long, because it really is that simple.

There's a button that'll do it all for you. And for the benefit of knowledge of all who read this thread...I added two more functions for those who don't know.
Red- URL Button. When you paste a URL, the highlighted text is what shows up. You can change that to whatever. Amazon (http://www.google.com)
Yellow- Quote Button. Makes everything look like a quote
Black- Image Button. Paste URL, picture shows up.

Okay.
When you click the Earth with the Hyperlink symbol a little box pops up.
1) Paste the link
2) It'll look something like this with no plus signs.
[U+RL="http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5917/onh3.jpg"][ur+l]http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5917/onh3.jpg[/ur+l][/UR+L]
3) The URL in the quotation marks is the actual URL. The words that show up are in the second URL with no quotation marks.
When you paste the link into the box and click OK, the second URL will be highlighted. (If not, at least you know which one you can change) And you can type whatever you want.

Also just got this little gem from Amazon in my email:

This item is no longer available through the Subscribe & Save program. However, a replacement item -- Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper (3 Packs Of 6 Mega Rolls) -- is available.
So... instead of sending me 3 packs of 6 Mega Rolls, they're sending me 3 packs of 6 Mega Rolls. I'm so glad they let me know, I would've been really confused when I got the shipment. :haha:

One nice thing about moving and turning off landline service was that I don't have to deal with those any more... used to get them ALL the time at my old number. Don't really get them on the cell but if I do at least there's an option to block calls from the number of anyone I don't want calling me.
However I used to use a tip I picked up somewhere, which was to "play nice" with the repeat offender collection agencies by offering to give them a new number for person they were trying to contact. The number? (202) 326-2222 (http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm). That always seemed to keep them from calling back again. :haha:
The really bad part is that they sell their lists to other collection agencies, so when one stops calling, a new one will begin calling, and this will keep repeating over and over again forever it seems.:nope:

Yeah, so I wasn't planning on getting kitties this soon, but one of my cat-loving friends took in a stray a while back who turned out to be preggers and now she has four adorable little male kittens about three months old who need good homes.
I'm planning on going over to see them this weekend, with any luck I'll have gotten my order by then and can just bring two home. :woot:
I don't have a cat door in place yet where I need one and that room will still need a new floor, but what the hell. I'll sort it out when the time comes. At least the mud room has the same AC/heat as the rest of the condo so I can just leave the door propped open for them to get to the litter box until I can get a proper cat door in for them.

If there's one thing I'm missing in retirement it's a good book to read. I've a few in the cupboard in the man cave but the majority are up in the loft and I can't be bothered to go up there.

Ooh, technology! :yep:
Does the attachment attach to anything or is it just attached for the W0W factor? :O:
They're like an Odor Eater for the litter box, the front part of the contraption that the cats walk up and over to get in and out is actually a hood that raises up and the auto rake pushes their solid waste underneath it and then it drops back down when the rake retracts. So it keeps the waste covered and out of the way where they are not stepping in and over it until you scoop it out. It also helps with keeping any unpleasant odor under control while the waste is still, you know, fresh.
The Velcro attachment goes up on the underside of the hood and then the odor absorber thingies have Velcro on one side so you can stick them up under there and then change them out periodically. They're just an additional measure of odor control, I'm not really having too much trouble with that and putting the cat door in may make it a total non-issue but I thought I'd give them a try to see if they really do make that much of a difference.

Waitwaitwait. That's something new. That sounds like a mechanical contrivance, which sounds like something the cats can play with until they break it. Of course I'm probably misunderstanding the whole thing, which would be nothing new, but still...

http://www.scoopfree.com/HowScoopFreeWorks/
It is a mechanical contrivance, but there really aren't any exposed parts that the cats can mess with. I guess they could both sit on the hood when it's trying to go up and weigh it down too much, but it's sloped so they can't really sit on it and be comfortable. They just walk over it and if it moves they tend to get off.
They do sometimes get in the box again when the rake is moving but they can't really do anything but paw at it... it just keeps going. Because of the delay they're usually not still in the same room when the rake starts raking so it's rare that it's even an issue.
I don't use the disposable trays, I have a hard plastic permanent one and I do lift up the hood and scoop out the waste every 3-4 days. So far I've only had to completely change the litter about every two weeks or so. Their claim that you can just leave it for weeks at a time is, to say the least, overly optimistic, especially with more than one cat.

:haha:
My last run at Skyrim ended when I hit a quest glitch that made it impossible to continue with that character the way I'd intended, and thus impossible to determine whether or not a couple of new mods I was using were going to work the way I'd hoped. So I have been re-modding the game instead of playing it. Hoping to finish up any tweaks to the current mod line-up soon so I can try to play again next week, I'll be taking vacation time the whole week. I want to get some other things done as well but some play time is high on my list.
Don't worry about the kitties starving, they would never let that happen. :O: Their bowl isn't really empty long enough for them to ever complain about it, but I'm sure if I went to bed without putting something in there I would hear about it before too long. I made that mistake once. ONCE. :dead:
But their current bag of Kitten Chow will probably run out early next month, and then they will be nine months old and it will be time to switch them over to Cat Chow instead. OH THEY GROW UP SO FAST!! :wah:

Yes, it's me, I'm still alive. And still have cats. Because work has been such a total nightmare the last six weeks or so, with no end to the suffering yet in sight, that not having to repeatedly take apart their box to clean the reusable litter tray and dispose of all the used litter and refill the thing is totally worth $15 a week. I saw the latest post in this thread was you, and wondered if it was another cartridge. :haha:
I think you need to look at a laser printer the amount you must get through.

OH HEY YEAH I'M STILL ALIVE. More or less.
Work is still a nightmare. Long story, but it's a combination of things we had planned - remodeling the main office, switching to a new software system for EMR - and then stuff we did not have planned - another doctor retired with just a few weeks' notice and sent us all his patients, we had to open a new office to accommodate them, that place is about 300% busier than we were prepared for and most of our other offices have seen their workload double or even triple with the overflow. One of those things would have been enough, two might have just been manageable, but all three together = :dead:
And there is still no end in sight. So far my record is 16 hours of overtime in one week, the sad thing is that all that money is going into my bank account and I don't have time to spend it on anything fun. :wah:
