View Full Version : Trying To Gather Modding Tools

I want to mod this game to the point where I'm pretty much invincible with killer weapons. I've had it up to my eyeballs with the crashes and at the rate I'm going, I'll never complete a mission. So, I'm resorting to all out cheating.

I checked around the net for tools but everything is scattered with outdated links that I have to sort through. Is there a single user friendly tool that I can use to mod the sim and zon files in Silent Hunter 4? I tried that Mini Tweaker as well as all the other tools associated with it but they either need SH3 or they just don't work as indicated.

unrealistic but the sub's are hard to kill.

Cool. Does this work with all versions of the game? I tried a mod before and it didn't work well with the latest patch. I prefer realism too, but when the game crashes as often as it does, I find that issue takes away from the realism itself. This is especially painful when you play the game without accellerating the time.

I do not know as I do not use it and never have. So either post and ask in there or send a PM to the creator of the mod.

Is there a tool that I can use to mod these files myself? I'd actually prefer that since I have been editing the save file.

Have a look at this thread if you have not seen it. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=124340

Edit: Noticed your post in the thread, good luck with it.

Alright. I got the tweaker to work after collecting all the tweaker files I needed. Now, my problem is how do I apply them to the existing dat and zon files? Thanks!

Interesting. According to that link, the files don't need to be converted. We'll see.

Yeah, just as I thought. That tutorial states nothing about applying the tweaked files to the actual zon and dat files within the Silent Hunter directory. I've already done the editing, now I just need to apply the files.

I'm too used to XML where editing is simple Notepad work.

Once you do the work with the mini-tweaker it is automatically applied and creates a back-up of the original.

Ah. That's why it needed the alternate directory. Here I thought that was to stop the annoying popup for SH3. Having worked with so many difficult programs, this is the first one made easy.

Probably helps if I paid more attention. Thanks for the help! Good to see fellow Canucks play this game too.

Apparently the Balao.zon tweaker file included with the modtools save actually belongs to a Japanese sub. Is there an alternative save with the necessary tweaker files? Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind: upping the armor level and hitpoints of your sub does NOT make you indestructible. All the subsystems (i.e. engines, sensors, guns, various compartments etc) have their own allocated hitpoints, which you also have to modify, otherwise you'll end up with a perfectly intact hull but an otherwise completely FUBARed sub in which NO systems go ;)
The files to be modified are in the Data\UPCData directory. Search for the ones which lists the sub's substructures, find the mention of Hitpoints of every subsystem, and modify accordingly. These .upc files can be easily modified with Notepad, but of course, keep a backup of your originals in case something goes wrong. Hope this helps!

Yeah, I kinda figured that. I never knew you can up the armor level though. I'm wondering in regards to the momentum of my sub after requesting an all stop, what do I modify to slow it down quicker?

Just an educated guess, but I think it's the sub's Drag parameters found in the .sim file.
As a footnote, check out this tool (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119571), I've found myself using it much more than the Tweaker. And a generic tip: read as many threads in here as possible, I've learned quite a bunch in less than a couple of weeks! :yep:
