Once you do manage to get good weather in your game, there's a trick to keep it that way for a while:
You have to remember, that SH3 has a weather-pattern that changes after roughly 6 days, provided you didn't save your game during those 6 game-days.
If you did save (let's say, at day3), then the "weather-counter" resets when you load the save, and the 6-day cycle starts all over...which in this example means, that you now have 9 days of good weather in a row.
Most of the time, this works for me...but I don't use it to often, as I like the weather to be more dynamic.

I'm experiencing very varying weather with this setting
Fog=0
FogRand=0
Clouds=1
CloudsRand=1
Precip=0
PrecipRand=0
WindHeading=95
WindSpeed=4.000000
WindRand=1
WeatherRndInterval=2
Settings can be found in data\Campaigns\Campaign\*.MIS files.
All three MIS-files must have same settings, and I'm not sure if changes can be made underway in patrol (probably not).
In one patrol I go through all kind of weather, but not sure if it's a coincidence :roll:
If you test it out, some feedback would be nice.
Fog=0
FogRand=0
Clouds=1
CloudsRand=1
Precip=0
PrecipRand=0
WindHeading=95
WindSpeed=4.000000
WindRand=1
WeatherRndInterval=2
it's AFAIK the
WeatherRndInterval=2
setting you have that is helping move the weather thru the changes you are getting ...this again AFAIK..sets the weather to change randomly every two hours...
Fog=0
FogRand=0
Clouds=1
CloudsRand=1
Precip=0
PrecipRand=0
the weather sytem has two settings available again AFAIK for weather changes via these entrys....one is MINOR changes in weather only...and two MAJOR changes in weather only...
this also is reflected in the mission file entrys shown..
in that
CloudsRand=1
is MINOR changes in weather only
and
CloudsRand=2
is MAJOR changes in weather only
now this is significant because of the randomisation of the weather ...
if you are in a storm and you have the weather (in this case clouds) set to minor changes ONLY then every time the weather attempts to change (as designated by the
WeatherRndInterval=2
(2 hours as you have it)
it can ONLY select from a random choice very similar to the weather you are currently experiencing..
ie very slightly more stormy
or
very slightly less stormy..
minor change you see?
if those changes are set to occur only every 12 hours or so..and given that it is random..the next xhange is still restricted to
slightly more stormy or slightly less stormy..and it is just as likely that the change will be slightly more stormy again..if this change only occur once every 12 hours it is not difficult to see why you can get "stuck" in a storm for many days...it will even appear as if the weather hasn't changed at all..as a MINOR change is barely noticible when viewed from the bridge..but it will have changed..very slightly (MINOR change)
you have ofset this drawback by having the changes occur very frequently ie every two hours..:up: so allowing for dramatic changes in weather by virtue of the fact that the minor changes happen very frequently:yep:
(you might desire to switch on the rain fog and other settings also..Fog=1
FogRand=1 etc Fog=1 switches this feature on one would have to assume)
the other method would be to sett all the weather changes to MAJOR changes only by setting all the Rand settings to 2
FogRand=2
CloudsRand=2
PrecipRand=2
WindRand=2
you can then increase the
WeatherRndInterval=2
again to balance the system out
tho i favour a shorter time period for even major weather changes simply for the reason that the sensors ARE effected by weather changes
both in visability ranges AND the Hydrophones which are heavily effected by the sea conditions..ie shorter range for the hydrophone in heavy weather longer ranges in calm weather and so on..
as this introduces a very dynamic set of additonal variables to the in game ASW work done by the escorts ..making life a lot more interesting as if it gets rough during a depth charge attack the DD's will begin to find it harder to detect you and the opposite if it gets calmer etc...thereby adding another layer of realism and gameplay to the thing...the more often these changes occure the more likely they are to occur at a critical moment during the gameplay...on the surface of course if it gets foggy as you approach a convoy then the impact is obviuos and the reverse is equaly true...
so all in all
having more frequent and dramatic weather changes than perhaps is normal is IMO a valuable addition to the depth of the gameplay...and of course it looks good from an eye candy point of view also...
:up: :up:
this IMO is such a significant addition to the game and quite obviuosly a massive realism feature yet it even now after all this time iis still neglected as being mere eye candy..weather directly affects the destroyer's sensors (and the players too)
to ignore this is to have only half the games capability working..which is just silly...it's a perfectly stock weather settings option ...major changes or minor changes ...and the rndinterval being every x number of hours..
so as you so rightly have noticed either have minor changes occur very frequently as one answer or have major changes occur less frequently as another answer..either way it IS the answer to the weather issue..from a purely realism standpoint anything that in real life had a measurable impact on the Destroyers/Submarines sensors should also be incorporated into the game no? (not to mention the crew fatigue etc)
the fact it also has a huge impact on the in game visuals and experience of actualy playing the game (atmosphere and immersion ,eye candy et al).. is just a fantastic bonus to go with the huge hike in realism...no research testing needed ..it's a stock game function..(check the SH3 mission editor)...tiny edit HUGE result

Thanks CB.. for a very interesting and comprehensiv explaination. I have a question about the fog, cloude, precip faktors. What does 0 mean in these case? Which figures can I use, 1 or 2 and what does it means?
Mikael
cheers
i'd have to assume that
Fog=0
FogRand=0
etc in that these settings are set to nought that the game won't load any fog conditions nor would it randmoise any fog that might be there..or similar//
there may be effects tied to the nought entry but i dunno what they may be ..
but
Fog=1
you would be reasonably safe to take this as YES include FOG in the mission
FogRand=1
this tells the game to ONLY allow MINOR changes in the fog density when the weather changes
FogRand=2
this tells the game to ONLY allow MAJOR changes in fog density when the weather changes
same with the other options..
so i would suggest these settings as a place to start
Fog=1
FogRand=1
Clouds=1
CloudsRand=1
Precip=1
PrecipRand=1
WindHeading=95
WindSpeed=4.000000
WindRand=1
WeatherRndInterval=1
to give MINOR changes at VERY frequent intervals (weather changes very slightly once every HOUR) which in real life has GOT to be ball parkly realistic do you think?
as a thought#
(i'd be tempted to try even WeatherRndInterval=0.5 as an experiment also..giving changes every half an hour tho not certain the game will accept such a low time interval)
or for the other method try these settings as a place to start
Fog=1
FogRand=2
Clouds=1
CloudsRand=2
Precip=1
PrecipRand=2
WindHeading=95
WindSpeed=4.000000
WindRand=2
WeatherRndInterval=5
giving ONLY MAJOR changes in the weather once every 5 hours
and experiment from there...be aware that you may have to go on a bit of time excell voyage before these new settings take effect...so start a new patrol hit time excell and stay away from other shipping untill the weather changes ...it may take quite a long trip before the changes kick in..(not entirely clear as to why there is a delay) BUT once the weather has changed the edit has stuck and you can enjoy it as the norm from then on

It's a good post from C.B. I bought SHIII the first day it was released but even after all this time and despite the awesome mods and supermods that are available I still find the game less than believable when I sail into the North Sea or Atlantic at any time of year and find a flat calm sea and cloudless Mediterranean skies. Anyone who lives near those two stretches of water could tell you that it just don't happen.:down:

I would like to have good weather for awhile & weather not change unless I change it, how do I write that? I would like no storms for a long while till I decide myself. How do I write the configurations for this?

I've always considered poor weather my friend. My tactics send me up the center of the CNV and poor weather masks my approach from the escorts. Late in the war poor weather is especially fortuatous.

I was always skeptical about deadly calm sea and no clouds, too. Finally I found someone to talk...
