View Full Version : Flying torpedo
Kind of a wierd question guys. Do you remember seeing a movie on the net when someone had made a type VII jump out of water like a dolphine? It was jumping over the ships and all that. It was so funny. Anyways, I had an idea. Is it possible to make torpedos fly in the air like modern missiles do? Where in the config is the setting for the depth at which torpedos move? Is it possible to set the "depth" over the water?

well not tried it myself, but it could be possible I think by steeing the depth with a negatiave value and adjusting torp mass, speed, drag etc. or copy the ones from an aircraft data file. Please keep us informed when you plan to try it out

great idea....................... that would be cool.... reminds me of the time one of my torpedos suddenly flew out of the water and hit a nearby boat!!! this was in a playable s boot when i tried to make a torpedo hit my boat............

IIRC, the reason the sub 'flew' was that he'd set its speed at some horrendously high figure. It wasn't exactly flying, per se. But it was moving so fast submerged that when he surfaced the boat sort of launched itself into the air.
I don't think you can do the same with a torpedo. Even if you set its speed very high, there's no way to have it go above the water.

This coming from the guy that just figured out the epic fix for the wake bug and gave us draining water for the u-boats?
With that attitude how are you ever going to release the "Sub-Launched Rockets" mod? :-?

maybe if you launched it deep, and while it is going up, it is going fast, maybe it would not have time to turn?

The dolphin movie by Mr. Fleck (seen here: http://www.bts-mods.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.0) was made possible by increasing the speed of the sub.
Mr. Fleck sent me the files he used to create that movie, and in the game my sub was reaching speeds of 231 knots.
The theory of launching a torpedo in deep water isn't possible, nor is it possible to launch a torpedo and see it 'fly' while your sub is in the air.
The torpedos are restricted from launching below a certain depth as water pressure would result in damage. Secondly, if you were to launch a torpedo while your boat is 'flying', the game would render it as if it were launched at periscope depth.
Another thing to consider if you increase your boats speed, is that after 35+ knots, it becomes highly unstable if you wish to maneuver it around. You would bring it into a death spiral and sink to 300 meters or so, maybe more, depending on your speed. After 500m your sub vanishes from the screen and you're essentially done.
Interesting idea, but probably not likely to see any so called flying torpedos, although it would be pretty humorous!

The max depth for launching torpedoes can easily be adjusted from the submarines' .cfg files. I don't know how deep they can actually be launched in SH3, but in SH4 it works just fine down to at least 60 meters. I haven't tried any deeper.
edit: And btw when trying to create modern torpedoes in SH4 I accidentally made a torpedo "fly" at a height of a few meters for a few seconds by setting the torpedo's speed too high. adjusting its max dive angle to an angle too steep and firing it from 50 meters. If you upped these values to some outrageous figures it might actually fly in SH3 too.

What makes the u-boat bounce in and out of the water is the dive plane settings; would a torpedo have the same principles???
I don't know a whole lot about how those are setup in SH3 yet... :hmm:

Actually, Rubini is the genius behind the wake bug fix and the draining water, not I.
