View Full Version : *Merchant Fleet Mod Sneak Peek # 2: The ID Book (WIP)*

10-12-07, 10:08 AM
This second Merchant Fleet Mod preview is something different. It contains an abridged version of the U-Boat commander's recognition manual that is being drawn up for inclusion with the mod. This edition only contains some of the ships that you'll see but there are over 30 illustrations and a fair amount of technical details. A much improved version's in the works. Maybe you can let me know which ships seem interesting, & which ones you might not like. I will see what can be done but I can't guarantee anything since the 3d work is very nearly complete.

Thanks. Unfortunately liners will probably not be included since the existing liners would need too much work to get to a releasable standard. Hopefully they will be released separately with the Naval Auxiliaries later on. There are a couple of freighters like M10B that are supposed to represent passenger cargo ships.
:rock:Great work, as always. I wish we actually had an ID image for all merchants in-game so far as well, although with your mod pack, we probably won't need the stock ones anymore anyway.

Super work there on all those merchants! :yep:
We all can't wait to hear the crack of the champagne bottles to christen these ships and see them set sail in SH3. An awesome addition.

Beautiful work ! I like the dark images - easier to see than the shaded versions that SH3 uses, and more authentic based on pictures of Groners taht I've seen.

This would also be good as a ID ship chart on the the poster wall in the radio room? This is a really good addition to the game. Thankyou for your hard work.

i hate the stock C-2 T-2 T-3 and C-3 class merchants/tankers...does this mod replace them???
All of them were introduced very late in the war...and seeing them during the early years is really annoying.

Ahem
Type C2 ships were designed by the United States Maritime Commission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Maritime_Commission) (MARCOM) in 1937-38. They were all-purpose cargo ships with five holds, and U.S. shipyards built 173 of them from 1939-1945.
Type C3 ships - A total of 465 of these ships were built between 1939 and 1947.
The T2 tanker, or T2, - The largest "navy oilers" at the time, nearly 500 of them were built between 1940 and the end of 1945.
But I agree
Too many of them
No the mod wont replace those units without extra work

Another option:
Launching two ship models more generic with the same parameters (draft lenght tonnage etc) called for example " Common Steam merchant" and "Common Motor merchant"...Because also if we add a lot of new ships, they won't be spawned in convoy at the same rate of C-2s and C-3s

Well WHEN Iam releases his MF mod I may release a GWX set of files to remove the C and T ships from a lot of rosters and replace them with newer units
As it stands now GWX convoys in 1.04 are random so show a variety of different units
Sometimes no C or T ships

Perhaps an idea for a future mod could be to replace the C and T class ships with new models? Certainly the C's, I think the stock ships are very dull looking. I know that mass produced ships like these were not designed with looks in mind but I think they could be made more detailed.
I think the C3 must be my least favourite ship in the whole game. To me it looks like a cartoon ship, all hull and not enough superestructure. Its like a giant grey brick floating by in the game!

I agree that several of the mass produced ships need replacement. What's more, after looking at their models in Wings3d I discovered that some of their proportions cannot possibly be correct. When they were originally modeled the creators may not have used the same scale - hence the inaccuracy. I don't mean to put down the developers, though, since the Victory Ship is excellent and the Liberty Ship is a major improvement from the one in SH2. My theory is that they must have run out of time before they could complete the models to their satisfaction - note how much more detailed the Victory Ship is than the T-2, for example.
To replace the C-3 I created two large, modern composite superstructure freighters (neither of which is in the preview). Hopefully they are passable representations of the modern large freighters used by the US, Japan, Norway, and a few other factions.

Sounds good!
That would probably explain why the C3 looks so strange its hull is clearly too large for the superstructure. It is odd that some of the ship models are so good when others are pretty weak.

Don't feel bad. While they were indeed pre-and-early-war designs, they were also exclusively American. The British bought a very small handful of C-2s (five, I think) but that was it. I, too, hate seeing all those other navies using them.
A project I started long ago but never completed was to create a list of proper names for each type, for use with SH3 Commander's Ship Names list, and if I ever get a new home for my computer I hope to pick it up again. I would love to see Empire types get branded with the proper names, as well as T-3s and small coastal merchants.
Maybe someday.
Dam great and awesome work mate!

Has this been finished yet?
It is postponed again (surprise surprise - I know) - once again real life issues interfered. I was racing to get it finished before late November-December (when I knew I'd get hit with a lot of work) but there was just no way to finish in time. :damn:
This hiatus is brief; a few days before Christmas I will continue modding b/c I have a holiday break. The good news is that when I was racing to finish it I got a tremendous amount of skinning done. Mostly I just have the grey camoflage skins to do, which can be shared by different models and take less time to research than the early war civilian paint schemes.

It will work for stock SH3 but because the damage model is going to be geared towards GWX the ships will be hard to sink on an unmodded installation. However, you can easily use minitweaker to reduce the hitpoints or increase the torpedoes' explosive power. Eventually you should get a value that will let you sink most ships with 1-2 torps.

I'd love to see it too. My Ship-Names cataloging is coming along nicely, and the more models there are the more accurate I can be. I'm already assigning and reassigning names to the imported SH4 ships, as a lot of the Japanese merchants look just like their European counterparts.
His ships are for SH4 if I understand it correctly: http://hosted.filefront.com/jmjohnson36 :hmm:

The ones that the NYGM team chose to release are based on the first beta. I would prefer to have the next release based on the improved 2nd version of the mod. I can't really give an accurate release date but I'd say it's at least 75-80% done.

@BBW:

NYGM uses (a selection of) IABL's *stock* ships, some of which we have re-zoned.
The reason for the CTD in GWX must be due to different zones.cfg files, to which DTB and I have made a lot of extra entries for the changed zone names to give the NYGM revision-2 slow-sinking model. You *might* be able to swap the NYGM zones.cfg file for the GWX2 zones.cfg file for testing purposes, it depends on whether the GWX version has unique entries for some ships which the NYGM file lacks. If you get a CTD after the swap, then you will know the answer!
If you use the GWX2 zones.cfg file with the same IABL's original ships (not taken from NYGM), you should not have a CTD in the museum, and you will still have the same ships, but with their original zones and no NYGM slow-sinking model (but presumably GWX2 has its own slow sinking model for the generic zones which IABL has used).
Stiebler.
Hi

I have had it before but had to reformat my PC
