Hi everyone, Ive been a long time member of this forum (since SH2 was in its heyday) and even though I havent posted that often, I visit this forum regularly.

I, like many of you, very much appreciate the work that modders do to make this a better game. Otherwise my copy of SH3 would be uninstalled and sitting on the shelf.

Now, because of this I always felt the need to contribute in some way to this outstanding subsim community:D but my question was "what could I mod that has not already been modded before? Sooner or later I settled on the intro movie for Silent Hunter 3. Yea, you know the intro movie right? Thats the beginning cartoonish CGI sequence that was pretty cool the first time you watched it but now you, like everyone else hit Escape so you can start playing. Well (hopefully) no more!!!:yep:

What I have done is create a NEW intro movie. " What kind of movie is this?" You ask? Well, I dont want to spoil anything but this is intended for the SH3 enthusiast. Consider yourself an enthusiast if you have mods like GWX, Church's OBS scope, various sound mods etc. If you have these things and love SH3 now as much as I do then this Intro Movie is just for YOU!!!
Actually this should have been released about a month ago but as I dont have a constant internet connection and had to make some changes I'm finally releasing today. Ive seen alot of user made movies and I like this one alot and Ive watched it 300+ times while creating it. So what are you waiting for, Go and Get It:|\\

Installation instructions:
1:) Click on the link below and download the file
2:) Extract to your Silent Hunter 3 MODS folder
3:) Use JGSME to enable the mod
http://files.filefront.com/The+Battle+of+The+Atlanticrar/;8731358;/fileinfo.html

A quick word of note. This file is larger and (considerably)longer than the default intro movie. I wanted to make something thats really going to get you into the mood to play some Silent Hunter 3. Because this file plays before the game files themselves are actually loaded it is, of course, compatible with any installation setup you may have, plus its JGSME ready. So download, fire up GWX, or whatever your particular installtion, and enjoy.

Lastly, I would very much appreciate you guys' feedback on this and like I said above I dont have a constant connection to the internet at my place so I only check back here every week or two. So if you have a question or comment just leave it here (hopefully this thread will remain up top) and when I get "back from patrol" in a week or two I answer any questions or comments you may have. Enjoy!!!!

You sir, have put together an exceptional movie sequence there

I thought that was great and will certainly be using it in one of my game installations :yep:

Far to long for an intro standing at 16 minutes and 30 odd seconds :o

But as a film on it's own to watch that is a different matter, brilliant totally outstanding and worth watching.

As a suggestion well worth uploading to You Tube.

Fantastic compilation!

Why do I NOT use it as my intro movie?
Because I will sit there, stare with an open mouth at the video and forget about my true duties as commander of U-49 to deny the atlantic to our enemies. This would fundamentaly undermine the spirit and moral of my crew. ;)

MackTheGovnah,

Very nice work mate. Uncommon footage too. (at least uncommon to me)
Quite obvious that a lot of care went into this. Heck, its great to have even as a stand-alone file.

Three thumbs up!

Truly fantasic!! I've never seen a bit of film like that. I really liked how it ended with the what I think was a type XI with the crew of a sunken ship on its deck and towing lifeboats packed with people. It showed that no matter what, there is always side of human emotion in war.

I watched this last night, there was footage there I have never seen before, also that colour footage of a type IX was very pleasing to behold, especially with it diving and surfacing.

This truly is a very nice piece, also your modelling of a sharks, that'll give Penny something else to look for when she goes to the carribean in her IXC/40, besides sinkables.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I hope everyone who watches it enjoys it, especially you guys from the GWX dev team. Keep up the great work!!

Now, about the considerably longer length. I made the choice to make it long because this game itself is 1) a simulation of real-life events, 2) The battle of the atlantic (the setting for this game) was the longest battle of the largest war in the history of the world. The sea lanes were literally the life line of the Allied nations and without the sacrifices made, things would be a little different than they are today wouldnt they?
Besides, you can bypass the intro anytime by pressing the spacebar, mouse button etc...Thanks again everyone.:lurk:

Man this intro movie really rocks.

Where did you get this much colour footage? And do you know anything about the various conning tower designs, I mean some of them looked nothing like the ones we have in SH3.

The footage itself is from a 5 disc DVD set I bought several years ago titled "WWII Battlefront" Disc 2 episode 3 "The U-boat War". I was wasting some time at Target a few years back and spotted it for $20. Its not exactly on par with "The World At War" or the recent "The War" by Ken Burns but if youre a WW2 afficianado such as myself its a gold mine, and all 25 episodes are in color\colorized. Ive been sitting on the idea for some time and wasnt sure even HOW people made movies using video (this is actually the first movie Ive ever made for anything) until I ran across a link for Xmpeg.

Im not exactly sure about those conning tower designs. If anyone has any information I would also like to know. Also the end sequence where the U-boat is picking up survivors is almost assuredly the infamous Laconia Incident. You can read more about it at these links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconia_incident
http://uboat.net/boats/u156.htm
http://www.uboataces.com/battle-laconia.shtml

A sad note is that U-156 which initiated the rescue operations and actually broadcast a plea for help on an open frequency was sunk with all hands on March 8, 1943.

I think the strange looking tower with the huge gun in the front could be U-A.

Intro doesn't go to game, it goes to "Hall of Fame". Great work MTG; I hope, you win an "Oscar".
The strange U-boot coul be HM S/M Seal, captured by Kriegsmarine and commisioned as U-B on 11/30/1940.

Wow...thats simply fantastic. The moment where you watch the sunderland drop those bombs/depth charges on that U-boat and it snaps in two made me jump in shock. I've never seen a U-boat blow up like that! Brings it home that they are very fragile machines of war. Salute to those poor Jerries who went down with their boats! (and to submariners of all nations who lost their lives in the war)

This is a great movie. Thanks for putting the effort into it.

Seeing the years appear in the movie gives me an idea though. I know you can use SH Comander to automatically load different skins for the ships depending on the date in the war you are currently at. Can you use this to load different intro movies. If so it would be great if there were a series of shorter movies covering the U-Boat war (maybe the whole war in general) for 2-3 month periods. Then if you are loading a game in ,say, Sep 43 the intro movie would show things that occured in Jun - Aug 43.

Given the length of patrols and time in base you would get a new intro movie with almost every patrol. I know I would want to watch it. Also unless you stick to just playing one period of the war it will probably be a long time before you come bact to that particular movie again - hopefully to such and extent that you will want to watch it agin.

I realise that it would take a lot of effort to produce the movies, but does it seem possible?

Just going to hijack the thread a little: As this is my first post on SH3 I would like to do something that I should have done a long time ago and thank all those who have created mods, posted pictures, stories and .... well just contributed in anyway to this forum. I would hate to think about what SH3 would be like with out all your work.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Im really glad you all enjoyed it, I had alot of fun making it. I hope to re-release a newer version sometime in the future using episodic content and maybe some pictures with historical facts for use with SH3 Commander. That will be my next project but currently I dont have a timetable. The major problem I have is that I dont have constant access to the internet. This video should have been released well over a month ago because I just needed an audio converter to put the finishing touches on it. So if I dont reply that often to this thread its not because I dont want to;) Thanks again guys.

Thanks for putting together this video and sharing it with the subsim community. I've watched it several times now and get a little more out of it each time.

A couple of clips I find especially interesting are the short scene wherin the the captain is looking at the recognition manual, and also the brief view out the periscope -- here are the images I am referring to:

Mack, do you know if there is a more detailed view of the recognition manual on the dvd's that you used, and were you able to tell from what kind of sub the periscope view was taken?

Thanks again for sharing the unusual footage.

As an open question to the forum: does anyone know of a good scan of an original "Erkennungshandbuch" recognition manual? It would be interesting to see exactly the kind of information that was recorded for the various vessels.

Hi Muser, sorry to say that that is all the footage of the recognition manual that the DVD contains. From the looks of it they used separate manuals for the different nations and his CE is holding the one for merchants. Also I have no idea what periscope view that is. The original footage itself was more or less a highlight reel and I started joining\editing from there.

Im sorry if I didnt answer the PMs. I dont have a steady internet connection and can only check this thread every week or two. To answer your question, the composer of that excellent track you hear during the opening sequence is one Morgan Casey. Check out his website at www.morgancasey.com (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/www.morgancasey.com)
It's called "EB Roman Theme" and was composed specifically for the outstanding Europa Barbarorum mod for Rome Total War. If you havent heard of Europa Barbarorum, oh brother, you better run (dont walk) to www.europabarbarorum.com (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/www.europabarbarorum.com) and get this mod right now. Its as good as any mod ever released for any game. As a matter of fact Ver1.0 was just released last week.

To be honest, I think this is wrong.

The Devs (NOT THE PUBLISHER) always love their games. there were MANY things they wanted to put into SH3, but UBISOFT said "nope, we want a release, we want dollars!"

so thats why SH3 isnt what it should be. and besides that you have to think about the enormous amount of time needed to do all of this stuff... we would need to wait 4-5 years for the SH3 we would like to see :know:

What did happend to your Filefront page? I could not find it anymore?:-?
Kind regards/Viele Grüße

It looks like,Filefront has locked my Account.I uploaded a few Wrestling Movies from Youtube to Filefront.I converted these Movie with a web converter into AVI File.

Then 3-4 days later,I got a email from Filefront, which said that some of my Files got an Legal Violation,so i don't know which Files Filefront meens, because the email said nothing about that.

So,Filefront has locked my Account.

To be honest, I think this is wrong.

The Devs (NOT THE PUBLISHER) always love their games. there were MANY things they wanted to put into SH3, but UBISOFT said "nope, we want a release, we want dollars!"

so thats why SH3 isnt what it should be. and besides that you have to think about the enormous amount of time needed to do all of this stuff... we would need to wait 4-5 years for the SH3 we would like to see

Then the publishers need a kick in the behind. Pain is free.:yep: Anyhow I know the Dev love there work. I was talking about the publishers. Finally I was trying to be sarcastic...;)

Don't worry.

And you're right,it were really bad for the SH3 Community,if these files were forever lost on my Filefront page.

But the Luck is,the Collection is still on my Harddisk.
