Another wondering topic, well it looks like thier might be something with the normal maps being added to sub skins. But i also was wondering if the stock skins can be turned into higher res skins.
The details on the stock skins in my opinion really reflect how the boats looked, rusted alot more texture, and denting. yes i understand the rivets need to be taken off. I love foofighters high res skins, but thier to pretty in my opinion, the stock rust and wear looks like the photos of the boats ive seen in the books and internet.
If somebody could coach me alittle to wear i could do this myself im a willing student.
But anyway was hoping we could up the texture res on the stock messy skins for our boats.
Much obliged

I like the idea of a rougher look also. Skins that look like the sub has made several thousands miles of travel in rough waves, sea water, etc.

exactly, i think the stock skins are great as far as detail goes, with the rough look. Im sure it can be improved though, i think somebody correct me if im wrong but cant we take the stock skins and put them through photoshop or some other utility and get them to 2048 res textures? Im a noob sorry:damn:
you can do that, yeah. in fact i scaled them up to 4096 but because the texture simply becomes scaled-up it doesn't add more detail... just makes the whole thing bigger in terms of MB ;) you really need to re-do a skin to get that added detail in higher res.
right now (as i find the time) i'm trying to make an accurate texture map for the gato in 4096 (you know, something that accurately tells you the position of parts on the texture). it's a pain in the ass because of all the waiting (the saving of the dds in 4096 seems to take ages, plus that constant loading and reloading of sh4) but i think i'm making progress.
once that's done i'll probably make a new skin and normalmap for that boat, too. maybe other boats after that - but it *will* be a while since i have lot's of RL stuff to take care of atm and this is really tedious and time-consuming work.

I second that ;)
I too prefer the stock textures, not to mention their specular maps

...just a thought...have you ever tried GIMP and it's dds-plugin...i just gave it a try and it saved 4kx4k dds in less than 10 seconds....i took one of the balao skins and scaled it to 4kx4k and then saved it......i wish i tried it a bit earlier, there are other useful things in GIMP too...like make seamless texture..it would have been quite useful when i was making that seafoam....:damn::damn:....i havn't found it in my photoshop, and don't know if there even exist plugins for that, at least not found one yet...

i'll give it a go. although i have the impression that the slow photoshop is due to my recent switch to vista 64 after my xp died horribly :nope:
maybe there's even a 64bit version of gimp??
btw for making seamless (and especially procedural) textures you gotta take a look at a program called "Texture Maker". Google it up - it's an awesome tool imo

...well,photoshop in my coolputer does not even open 4k dds textures(using that nvidia dds plugin)....and it is slow with 2k textures, when saving.....
...btw here's link to that dds- plugin... http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4816
....not sure about that 64-bit version but i saw somwhere that someone had installed it to 64-bit os and it was working....
...thanks for the tip for that texture maker...i'll give it a try....

I've got Photoshop going smoothly with the Kill Flags Mod. Can I test a .dds file for you gents? Right, like you said, scaling-up an image just gives you the effect of looking at a comic strip with a magnifying glass.
Pls zap me a pm if I can help test something.
* BTW, great sig Jaketoox

you won't have better apearance while simply sizing up the textures... Sizing up will result in nothing but a more blurry texture and won't add details. To get a proper hi-res feeling, you have to manualy repaint a texture using the stock one as a guide.

..i just remembered, that there was a program called s-spline some years ago..found it again and now it's called PhotoZoom pro2....
Don't know if it's any help here, but take a look at the pictures...
First picture shows how 2kX2k dds looks, second picture is scaled up to 4kX4k with photoshop, using bicubic-smoother algorithm....and the last one is scaled up to 4kX4k with photozoom using s-spline xl algorithm....
