At this point I'm begining to wonder whats next? We have almost very thing to make SH3 fully real as a sim can get. The next step I see is that we'll have better AI, fully animated crew and hatches, all compartments from bow to stern, missions that allow the player to shot and destory shore targets, lifeboats, the ablity to capture enemy ships as prizes, and stop ships and search them. Ect, ect, ect. It may sound like a lot of nonscene it, but it might just happen. Some thought that a AI sub that can dive, surface, shoot torpedos and work in wolfpacks couldn't happen but it is.

Not a problem RB. Some one had posted something about it somewhere around here. But I hope someone can come up with the ablity to shoot at shore targets. Its no fun having an 88mm gun if all you can use it an just ships right?

Last week I went into Wings3d and made a couple of different trucks and train cars as land targets - just in case someone finds out how to implement them ( I am not sure how).

Yeah,
why not have a realism mod where you could embody the Kaleun on a visit to the "Karbol Nüttchen". That would really top it up.

What about a fix for the food hanging from the ceiling. When you dive now, the food hangs in the way like you're surfacing.

Just a susgestion if anyone of you modders wants to try it ..... Make the harbor sounds more realistic so that people who have never been to the ocean or sea coasts can expericence the sounds ( too bad they won't be able to enjoy that awful stinch of rotting fish  ) ..........................
I live in Astoria Oregon which was a WW2 naval base / blimp ( all dis-banded now ) .. everytime I go to town I hear those irritating sea lions barking , plus see them laying on some of the docks and break water rocks ............ so ...
sea lions ( I think maybe common world wide ? )
candian geese sqawking ( or other geese )
an occansional duck quacking
Turns ( similiar bird as a sea gull but a softer ' peep ' noise )
plus other sounds such as arc welding , sawing , drilling ect. going on especially around the fishing boats ( they still fished even during the war of course ) ......
anyways ....... probably not easy to implemplent the actual animals or birds but maybe just the sounds would be nice ... if possible ...............

IF you manage to make the land units damageable you may well need to fix the camera bounce bug attached to land units too
Twas ok in the Ubi original release but got broke by the 1.4b patch
As a result of said bug GWX land units wont be spotted by the crew so you cant lock scope or shoot at as are classified different
Nothing worse than going next unit view in port to see the traffic then coming to a land unit and the camera goes all out of kilter

oh that's what that is when the camera starts spinning around in circles? How do you fix it?

Land targets sounds like a cool idea. One thing I rather enjoyed in SH4 was going to Wake and seeing a couple seaplanes floating there. Any chance we might see that somewhere? Maybe one here or there out at sea, you could say they landed to rescue some sailors. Past that, I want to see what comes out with GWX 1.04 and Uboat 1.2 before I think of anything else.

No. The control room seems to tilt the wrong way on one side, and the right way on the other; but the food hangs the right way.

TBH I dont think anyone has looked into it
Was the 1.4b patch that introduced that

A gunsight like SH1. I hate actual gunsight.
Wolfpacks would be nice. :D
I would also like to see a better crew system implemented.
I believe that the experience level of each crewmember should be marginally less important than it already is, but that qalification should become massively more important.
It would be fantastic if (for example) very badly damaged systems could only be repaired if an officer with the repair qualification is present in damage control.
I'd love it if officers could gain several levels of qualification: so a "5 star" Medic could bring even near death sailors back to full health in time, but a "2 star" Medic could only prevent their condition from worsening.
Overall I think the skill levels of one's crew should play a far greater part in the success of a patrol than it does now, particularly when things start to go wrong. Ideally, green sailors should even be capable of panic in extreme circumstances!
Losing a highly experienced, qualified and decorated officer should be a massive blow to the running of the ship wheras under the current system I find it has little impact.
Some kind of Nightclub feature ala Aces of the Deep would also be excellent. It could serve as the interface by which you recruit new officers perhaps. Getting drunk and bitching about the fuehrer would be good for a laugh.
It'd also be great if you could gamble with fellow sub captains and bet Renown! :o
Another thing I'd love to see would be a radio system whereby the broadcasts change depending on the point of the war, and give you updates on what's happening elsewhere in the region. I'm not sure how realistic this would be, but it'd be a thrill.

I'd like to see Tanks and APCs that can be destroyed by the Flakvierling 88mm and squads of infantry that can be run down by the AA guns. Maybe those MG42s can be used by the AI...
I'd like to see more Civilians, German Vehicles (i.e Opel Blitz, Kubelwagon and the Wirbelwind)
Imagine the Atlantic Wall and D-Day.
Obj: Sink the American Destroyer. We'd need LCVPS though. :hmm:

Interesting ideas. So, for instance, you are arguing that one officer might know how to repair radios & sonar but be unfamiliar with how to fix a wrecked deck gun, etc? That's logical - I expect that implementing this would (realistically) produce a lot more aborted patrols & lower tonnage scores.
I have a couple of screen captures from the opening scenes of "Das Boot" that I reworked to look like oil paintings. I would like to use them as a replacement for the recruitment and/or equipment interface to give more of a Nightclub ambience. I am not sure how we'd be able to implement the popular rumors & information a la "Aces of the Deep".
Working 88mm flak guns around the harbour. Or even-non working ones would be nice.

There is a harbor sound mod floating around, it adds several things. I think it was one of ventoros. Check his drive through section.
I live in a pretty busy harbor, its not a port or naval yard, but all we have a seagulls, which are soundless for whatever reason, we also have Craines and Pelicans. The craines and pelcans make squak noises. Who knows what they have in Europe, beats me.
I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Tropics

To implament the AOD Rumors and things, (I never got to play that game) I think this would be pretty easy, and it would actually be a mod that I could do, provided it was just adding dialog to the SH3 commander file. I have been thinking about adding things to this for quite a long time, also the news section I have been looking about to find that file(s). I want to work on those and make them longer, more in depth. I know I can find the bar scene folder, but I do not know where the news loading screens are. Could someone PM this too me?

Putting my little girl to sleep after that post, ive been thinking more and more about it. I am going to do this, even if I am not totally clear on what you are talking about, if there was some kind of special feature from AOD, with graphics and such, but I am definetly going to begin adding to the SH3 Commander bar scene as soon as I contact JSCones for permission.

I think it makes sense that officers with the Repair qualification would have different levels of skill and expertise. An especially skilled one might be able to scavange parts about the sub to jury rig a repair for a critically damaged system for example.
Similarly, it would be great if a highly skilled Machinist officer was able to squeeze and extra 0.5 knots out of the engines at flank speed.
Maybe a highly talented sonar operator would be able to detect ships at longer ranges, and be better at designating Warship or Merchant more accurately.
These are just a few examples of my thinking. I really do believe that highly skilled and talented Officers should be a submarine's best asset.
In some situations they should literaly be the difference been making it home alive or not. I'm sure that was demonstrated time and again during the war by the actual brave men who crewed the boats.
Maybe if the game game could be altered to automatically launch a seperate program when the player arrives in port, that program could then give the player a graphical representation of a nightclub with options like Rumors, Drinking, Fornication, Gambling, Recruiting. The program could modify the player's configuration files in real time so that when the player goes back to SH3 all their relevant details would be updated.
I know that SH3 Commander already has something like this (its better than nothing) but I was imagining a more complex interface with more options.
Giving the player a way to "blow off steam" between patrols (realistic when you think about it) would work really well. It could also be a way to serve the player with news of the war.
Spending Renown on interesting experiences with those French ladies would be kinda nice too.

Well I have yet to see them. Unless you mean those little concrete emplacements around the ports which pass for anti-aircraft cover :-? I was thinking of sandbagged positions etc. Even if it's just window dressing. Unless that is what you mean.
