I don't Know why some need the Microsoft Application compatibility
tool kit? I just copy paste the 2 files and load the game it worked.
The only thing I did to change the Rez was open the d3d9.cfg file:)
Edit using Notepad;)
I use Vista so I don't know if it does this in XP?:hmm:

are there any implications/bugs from doing this? Does it affect gameplay at all (like some keys don't work anymore, etc.)?
If using SP2 there is a needed fix, I'm not sure what it is, the only problem when using the high res mod is the fact that the cursor can dissappear on the bottom & right of the screen by the amout of pixels higher than the 1024x768 standard, this is annoying with slideout mods!:yep: To get a better picture I just use AA & FSA, however I do run it in 1024x768 mode to have the snapshot feature hitting the "PrtScr" key & saves as tga.

And maybe the F9 F10 and F11 Keys will not work with the ResFix.
But you can activate in the fixes d3d9.cfg file that Screeenshots are possible and even set a certain path. And then you can make screenshots with the printscreen Key.
There is no use of setting the resolution to a higher value than 1280x1024. This is the resolution SHIII was originally made for and it is the best setting.
I tried several resolutios starting from 640x480 ending with 1600x1200, made screenshots, zoomed them so that details had the same size and compared. And believe me 1280x1024 is best, because it is the native resolution of SHIII.
Selecting a higher res will only blow up the image but not add more details.
With XP SP2 you need the MSACT or you use a patch where this extrafile SHIII.sdb is already included. It can be activated by a simple batchfile.
Just copying the cfg and dll file did not work in my configuration.

The only issue I have is when I use CTR PrtScr to make screenshots some TGA files are just black. :-?
Rez I have set does stretch the width abit. You can see my pic for yourself. Just find my skin post.
Game runs smooth on my system. I tweek the Nvidia controls. Force Anisotropic filtering 8x and I can see details farther away than without. I Force Antialiasing 4x and get nice edges. Negative LOD bias is clamped. Triple Buffering off. Vertical sync off.
The only choppiness I get is when I nearing a port but for just a moment.
@Racerboy
I used SetKeys to reconfigure my key to my liking. I've change all keys to my personal setting that will fit sweetly to my Logitech G15 keyboard.

Hi fubar:
Download this, extract & copy contents into the SH3 Program folder.
http://files.filefront.com/SH3+XPSP2+Res+Fix+for+14bzip/;7588690;/fileinfo.html
You don't need the MSACT program.
Just run the install.bat file
Set the rez in the cfg file & set the program path for screenshots (PrtScr).
Easy as pie.

Has anyone found a way to run FRAPS with the ResFix ? I always forget and cause my patrol to crash :damn:

IIRC, FRAPS worked when I used it with the fix. Not 100% sure, but when I DID have crash with FRAPS & fix, I was recording at ½screen. Full screen, no problems.

I had the same proplem when I had to reinstall SHIII clean original.
If You have a SP2 for WinXP, just install latest version of Compatibility tool kit, then install the game, run it in the first start with "not official" *.exe (to avoid activation of SF res. lock) and apply your mentioned file... it worked fine for me.

I'm sorry Danlisa for being a dullard, but is this right ?
just copy the d3d9.cfg, d3d9.dll and SHIII.sdb as far as the ShIII/data folder ? or are their particular folders those three have to go in. I need to ask because I read the readme but I get nervous when placing files into the SH3 directory without JSGME.
Sorry for being a pain in the arse
No Ven.
Just place ALL files in the
C:\Programme\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII
Directory. And they won't overwrite anything but the ReadMe.:hmm:
Place it in there,
Run the SP2 RES fix.bat.

Relax Ven:D
Myxale has it right. This res fix even has an uninstall option.
You are not going to overwrite anything at all.
When you are changing the resolution aspect in the cfg, make sure you add a screenshot path as well.;)
FYI @ ALL
This res fix can be used while in game. Just minimise SH3, change the cfg and then return to game.
Really don't know why people try to use MSACT when this version is available.

@ JCWOLF
In the downloaded archive you have:
d3d9.cfg
Readme.txt
SHIII.sdb
SP2 Rez Fix Uninstall.bat
SP2 Rez Fix.bat
Copy ALL of these into the SH3 Program Folder.
1) Run SP2 Rez Fix.bat
2) Then open d3d9.cfg & set the resolution & screenshot path.
That's it, your finished.
Did you get the fix called SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b.zip (http://files.filefront.com/SH3+XPSP2+Res+Fix+for+14bzip/;8645509;/fileinfo.html) or the two file "fix"?
The proper fix has 6 files in it, including d3d9.cfg, if you need it you can get it at my FF. http://hosted.filefront.com/TheJhereg/
Then in d3d9.cfg just edit the resolution section as Wolfehunter stated above after you run the install.bat.

For some reazon 7z didn't add the Cfg file the first time....
Now what is the path for the screen shot,
just a place were I want my screenshots to go? :hmm:
I'm a ignorante...
JC The path can be whatever you want it to be!
Its where you want your screenies to go!
I made the path be my SH3 directory
here an example!
"C:\Programme\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII"
Keep in mind they will come as TGA and will not be displayed by the standart Wind pic viewer!
You need a programm that views TGA'S

Yep, anywhere you like.
Example:
C:\My Documents\My Pictures
Just put your choice in the cfg. I always use the default SH3 Program folder.
PrtScr to capture.
OK just a question more?

Don't worry it's just a comment, and says that the Print key takes pics. ;)
Tt had to be disabled with ";" so the line is not read by the program!

There is no use running SHIII a higher resolution than 1280x1024. Make screenshots in windowed mode from various resolutions, zoom them to the same size and compare them. 1280x1024 is best, believe me.

Shall I let you into a little secret?
Ever wanted to get a screenshot in a resolution that your monitor/hardware won't allow?
Using the SP2 Res Fix posted here, set your screen res to (example) 2048 x 2048 in the cfg file and then run the game in windowed mode. The game will run @ 1024 x 768 but your screenshots will be in glorious 2048 x 2048. Any resolution is supported, just crank it up.
Discovered this by mistake but apparently, is known to a few people.:shifty:

Since the stock game had Ctrl F11 set to screenshots, obviously there's a file somewhere that altered that, and set it to prntscrn.
Since it doesn't appear that the cfg in the high res fix can change the button selected, can anyone tell me where a different button can be set to take screenshots?
I'm having some issues using the prntscrn, where I get a huge stutter and some missing textures, and while just a wild guess, I'm thinking it's because two entities are attempting to take screenshots simultaneously, the game engine, and XP as a normal function of prntscrn.
Any way to set screenshots to a different key?
Please and Thank you.

http://www.howiesfunware.com/loadSideBarMiscSoftware.html
Friedl9te, I can tell you that running SH3 at 2560x1600 makes one heck of a difference in visual quality.:yep:
Same thing for SH4.
Friedl9te
10-30-07, 04:22 PM
Well it is a difference between real resolution and a picture inflated to fill a certain area.
I made a test last year.
Configure to run SHIII in windowed mode.
Then start the Game with 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x 1200, ...
And make a Screenshot of a similar content, thus you can compare the screenshots.
Then open the screenshots and compare them.
My result was that the 1280x1024 is the best quality. And that is the resolution the game was originally made for.
Increasing the resolution makes it larger, that is fine, but not better in quality.
You can your graphic card and your monitor blow up the picture to fill the screen. But you can leave the game resolution at 1280x1024.
Capt. Shark Bait

Sharkbait, what is your normal running resolution?

native res is LCD 1280*1024, which is what i set the cfg to.
Sharkbait, yeah that is not really much difference from stock resolution it would be hard to tell.
Your best bet for improving image quality is high AA and AF, also other settings in the control panel of your vid card.:yep:

Thats not quite correct, applying RezFix and playing in windowed mode, you can tune the resolution until it fits your needs. Ever tried ?
From my point of view its better correct in windowed mode than distorted dials in fullscreen.

Windowed mode is locked to 1024 x 768. Can't do anything about it.
