Here is a good picture of a telemeter chrono used in artillery during the american civil war. The chrono is normal except for the red scale you might have noticed :) .
What was its use?
Simple: The red scale shows the distance travelled by the sound (340 metres per second). Its use: Start the chrono when you see the flashing of the shooting gun or the torpedo impact, and stop it when you HEAR the sound of the shot or impact. Bingo...instant reading of a distance estimate in the red scale with the needle of teh clock :D
I know that similar chronos were used in naval artillery thorugh WW1 and WW2, and since SH4 allows as a realism option "Realistic sound travel time", it might be of interest to add the scale to the game chrono for getting quick estimates of distance to ships engaged in a gun battle.
I lack myself time to do it now, so if any modder wants to give the idea a go, here it is: (NOTE that the miles in the scale are statute miles, and not nautical miles. A new scale is needed in yards or nautical miles):
