Hello.

About a month ago I visited the USS Cod which is about 30 min. drive from my home. I was supprised to learn that late in the war the observation scope was modified to house an ST (I think) radar. From what I gathered, it had a limited range and only pointed in the direction the scope was pointed. I think you could look out of it still, but it gave a way to measure range accuratly in darkness. I've not seen this done. Would this be possible to mod?

Also, have pics if anyone wants to do a Cod skin.

If you peeked through the periscope on "the beach". Then you were in fact peeking through a radar equipped periscope. Indeed the radar was an ST - range only- type radar.

There's a section in one of the files for the ST radar, but unfortunately it's not enabled. :(

The real Cod doesn't have an emblem painted on it's tower. It had one, but I don't have a pic of that. Anyway, from what they said on the tour, none of the identifying markings were applied till postwar (Perhaps they just meant the number and not the kill marks). Cod does have some unusual "kill" marks though including one for 26 sampans, two for Thai freighters, and even one for a submarine-submarine rescue (which, AFAIK, no other sub in the world has ever had).

Something I found interesting:
for her last war patrol, Cod was configured for high surface combat capability (perhaps as a "sampan-killer"?) with two 40mm and a stern mounted 5 incher.
