I have been having a problem with Active Sonar Evasion. I am fairly new to Dangerous Waters, though I do have a passive acoustic background so I do understand more than most for a newbie.

The mission that springs to mind at the moment is "Stalking The Bear". The kirov is pinging the living daylights out of me. Regardless of what I have tried I can't escape it. I have tried Fast, Slow, Deep, Shallow and all the in betweens. I have tried different angles of approach, even hiding with the biologics and yet it always results in the Helix being launched, passing over me and releasing a weapon... thus I'm detected and therefore end of mission.

I would appreciate anyone that can offer some advice on evasion of the pings for sub drivers.

Cheers,

Scotty

Hmmmm.... Looks like a fair question. On the other hand, you just made that T-boat and S-boat comment. Should I answer? Hmmmmm :hmm:

No.

I said T212a aswell. :D What can I say, I like to stand by our own... Go on Molon you know you want to help out...

Just kidding. (edit: damn you're quick on the response, I started typing this one up as soon as I finished the previous one!)

Like any other detection in DW, the main variable is range, and there are many factors that effect the range you can get detected at.

The rule of wrist is that skimmers will pick you up 10nm out. Factors working against the skimmer can reduce this. The biggest factor would be a layer to hide under, which could reduce the range by 50% or more. Other acoustic conditions matter too; a bottom limited SSP with sand/mud bottom will shorten the range about as much as a layer will. After that, there's your boat's aspect: bow or stern aspect will knock a bit of the signal down...I haven't tested it enough to know exactly how much, but I'd guess you can shave about 25% off that way.

And of course, if you get a chance, approach from astern in the sonar blind spot.

Thanks for that, I will give it a bash. Perhaps I am still just going in a little too heavy handed on the approach.

Aspect has MAJOR effect. Can't tell in %, but in my tests, I got big fat bright return from target at best case aspect and absolutely nothing for same target, same distance, worst case aspect.

From my measurements of DW sound propagation model you can expect 'shadow zone' where you will be unreachable to show under the layer at distances above 6nm from pinger/listener. Shallow layer can get you even bit closer, but don't count on it.

Here are the current measurements:

So for avoiding active sonar - keep distant, keep under the layer, keep turned toward them or away from them.
Also .. I don't know the mission you are talking about, but some missions uses lot of random elements and some cases can't be won no matter what. Also patches and mods affects difficulty/possibility of some missions. If you only get stuck with one mission, try to start it again, or go on.

Regardless of how important aspect and what not are, inside of a certain distance, it just won't help you enough. If someone is pinging, the best thing you can do is keep your distance. Minimizing your aspect and going under the sonic layer (if it exists) will reduce the distance at which you are detected, but it is still not impossible to detect you, hence going straight at them and under them is a bad idea because they'll still detect you eventually.
