View Full Version : About .dat files and textures
Some stuff I don't understand:
When u insert a new subskin into the textures\normal folder, does the game ignore the texture file in the .dat files and load from the tex folder instead? In the stock game there is now skin textures in the tex\normal folder at all, only in the tex\low folder.
Would really appreciate a small explanation if anyone know and would mind!
Thx

Phew, this will take some memory power.;)
Ok, Stock SH3 1.4b will have 2 versions of the player UBoat skins. One at high rez and one at low rez. These are located in the textures folder as you say in your post. There are no skins (that are used by the game) in the DAT files.
If you want to create/use skins in the stock version of SH3, I suggest you use the 'Textures only' versions that are available. These will overwrite the TGA files that are located in the the TNormal folder. Nobody, as far as I know, has created Low rez skins for stock SH3.
Also, If you have Skin files on the the Textures folder, they will take priority over the DAT file. Textures are the last thing to be loaded by SH3 when you start the game.
I'm not sure that I have responed to a post by you before, so welcome to Subsim.
Thx Danlisa, that's the answer I needed. One mystery still remains though, in a clean install of SH3 there is no skin TGA's in the normal folder, so is the skins low rez in stock?
Thx again.
