I bring you Flags & Pennants for the subs in SHIII. Due to the animations of the pennants taking some time to do and re-animating the flags also taking some time I am releasing this mod for all to use. Newer versions will be released as the animating of the pennants and re-animating of the flags is completed.

Here is a generic readme for all subs:

This mod will enable 2 Flags on the flagpole (one for country and one for ship's flag or personal flag or whatever you want it to be) mounted on the stern of the Turm for the sub. The flags are animated and have a reflection on the water. This mod will also enable 8 pennant flags attached to a halyard which is attached to the obervation periscope. The pennants are currently not animated but do have reflections on the water along with the Halyard they are attached to. The flags will fly at all times but will not be visible underwater (you have the option to disable/enable one or both flags). The pennants will be seen when the observation periscope is raised and you have raised them (via the 'x' key) and will not be visible under water. Both the flags, Halyard, and pennants are customizable for whatever textures you want to use for them. If you do not want a flag and/or Halyard and/or pennant simply use TimeTraveller's Mini-Tweaker tool with my included tweak file to enable\disable the associated flag and/or Halyard and/or pennant. No TGAs are packed into the dat file for the flags, Halyard, or the pennants.
Comments/suggestions/criticism (all forms) are greatly appreciated and welcomed!

This is version x.xx of this mod and it includes:
- Turmxx_x_hd.dat
- Turmxx_x_hd.sim
- Turmxx_x_hd.dat
- Turmxx_x_hd.sim
- ...
- ...
- folder called 'TGAs_x_xx' containing the TGAs used for the flag (xx_x_Flag_1.tga and xx_x_Flag_2.tga) and the TGAs used for the pennants (xx_x_Pennant_1.tga, xx_x_Pennant_2.tga, xx_x_Pennant_3.tga, xx_x_Pennant_4.tga, xx_x_Pennant_5.tga, xx_x_Pennant_6.tga, xx_x_Pennant_7.tga, and xx_x_Pennant_8.tga) and the TGAs used for the Halyards (xx_x_Halyard_1.tga). Also contained in this folder are template TGAs for the user to make their own pennant versions and Halyard versions (xx_x_Halyard_x_template.tga and xx_x_Pennant_x_template.tga). I have also included the 16 pennants and 2 halyards that I had made for this mod so you can see how to make the TGAs for the pennants.
- folder called 'xx_Flags&Ps_x_xx_tweak_xxx' containing the tweak files for this mod.
- folder called 'FlakMonkeys TwistyPeriscopeThingy' which contains the readme and information on his original mod

Revision History:

1.01 Resized pennant flags to make them shorter and wider

1.02 Added Halyard and attached to observation periscope (modeled wind force acting on halyard)
Resized and redid pennant flags to show wind force acting on them
Attached all 8 pennant flags to the Halyard
Added reflections to both periscopes
Added reflections to Halyard and pennant flags
Added ability to enable/disable individual flags and/or pennants and the Halyard

1.03 Made Pennants controllable via the 'x' key (big thanks to Privateer!)
Added RDF Loop water reflection

1.04 Added Flakmonkey's TwistyPeriscopeThingyMod. First official release.
Changed Turm reflection to better 3D model


The flag, pennant, and Halyard TGAs are overridable by copying your own version to \data\Textures\TNormal\tex. See the 'TGAs_x_xx' folder for image sizes. The TGAs are NOT packed into the DAT file anymore! The flags, pennants, and Halyards rely on TGAs located in \data\Textures\TNormal\tex.

Known Bugs:
- Once the snorkel is visible on your U-boat the pennants are not able to 'rise' anymore. Looking for solution.

Upcoming ideas/development releases for this mod:
- animating pennants
- redoing the flags so that they are attached to a line and not hard mounted to the turm
- possibly adding the Flak gun, emblem, radar, and other reflections that are currently missing


The mod is based on the xxxxxx Turmxx_x_hd.dat files and xxxxxx Turmxx_x_hd.sim files.

This mod also incorporates FlakMonkey's TwistyPeriscopeThingy mod. See his readme included for details.

This mod is fully JSGME compliant. Unzip and copy Racerboy_7b_Flags&Ps_x_xx_xxx folder to mods folder, enable, and enjoy!

I have a question, and it doesn't mean anything; I'm just curious: Do the pennants reflect actual sinkings, or are they just generic eye candy?

I'll use it either way, 'cause it's an amazing bit of work. I'm just curious.

There's no way to have the game update the TGA's used for the pennants and thus they are generic eye candy that is customizable by the user (same with the flags). Say you sink a ship worth 10500, you could edit pennant #1 to read 10500 and enable it and thus when you raise your pennants you see it flying. Best I could do with what is available.

Racerboy - you mentioned disabling & enabling flags. In theory, could you have an accurate number of pennants as long as you exited the game every time you sank a ship and activated the pennants individually?

The VIIc based on SH3 1.4b files should be releasing later today or in the next couple of days max. It will include new flagpoles on both sides of the Turm for the flags. Just like in the tester I put out a couple of days ago. I'm going to redo the VIIb to have the flagpoles also.

The answer is yes. Please read the readme file and the tweakfile included to learn how to use this feature. It's very self-explanatory.

Just downloaded it yesterday, and its is great!! Also I made my own flag in place of the normal Nazi flag I used on of the sub emblems, changed it length and width, and for some reason had to turn it upside down to get right side up. But it works and its a pirate flag. Screenshots to come later.

Yes, with the flags you have to have your image upside down. That's why I included my flags and pennants so users could see how to make their own flags and pennants based off of what I did. Use the templates provided for the pennants, it will save you a lot of hassle and headaches.

Personally I like the flags and pennants for subs, the only thing that really needs to be done now is the try to animate the pennants, and I highly suggest changing the key to something else to rise and lower the pennants but other than that good job.

I have a VERY limited number of 'keys' to choose from. This ('x') was the best compromise. I have to use something that's already in the game. I cannot create something new for this. What key are you suggesting?

I have never seen flags flying either side of the bandstand in photos. Will you be giving people a choice as you did with the 7b?

Is there a way of "drooping" the flag when the sub is stopped - possibly a very challenging request - hence the challenge:D

The problem arises in later year's Turms on the subs. Do to the flak guns placements they are in the way of the flags and thus have to be moved [flags] to a new location. I thought it would be best to move them to the sides and give them flagpoles. Do you all not agree with this? Give me some ideas on a possible better solution then. Also in later years Turms there are no jackstaff's on the Turms.
There is no way to slow down the flapping of the flag (due to wind or speed). If I slow it down it will stay continuously slow, it's coded in the animation node. Same goes with drooping of the flag. Both could probably be done but the complexity and time and code required to do this isn't worth it.

I have installed your mod and I just love it! At first I had some problem because I only had white flags ans pennants showing, then I realised that because my pc is not powerfull enough, I had set the game on Low Res option. So I changed the path to go to "TLowRes" before enabling it with JSGME and it work just great.
One request, if I may; my favorite U-Boat is the VIIC with which I have beeb running a very successfull career from August 40 to now April 41 and I would really love to have your Flags ans Pennants for this type of U-boot.

I know this requires a lot of work!

Due to the amount of Turms and the need to add objects to them (flagpoles, etc.) development is slow. Currently this is only for the VIIb. I have the VIIc and IX's under development currently. I could use an assistant if there's anyone that's good with 3D modelling and hex editing...:yep:

Do you have to be in port for this mod to work? I installed via mod enabler and when i raise the peri no flags when i press x. The first flag mod did work though but now it doesnt.

shouldn't matter at all. Ensure that you have the folder beginning with 'Racerboy_' in the mods folder and not the one beginning with 'RB_'. Also ensure it's enabled ;)

Very interesting...:hmm: ...first report of this happening. I cannot see why that would happen. For safety please disable the mod and re-enable when in port. I'll do some testing on it tonight to see if I get the same results.

Oke here is axaclty what i did i opened RB_7b_flags&ps_1.04_gwx then extracted Racerboys_7b_flags&ps_1.04_gwx tot the mods folder Then i get a folder with Starting with the RB in the begining and inside the folder is the one that starts with Racerboy etc etc which also holds the data folder so i copy and paste that to the mods folder an erase the folder that starts with the RB.

Can't you make the flag pole a litlle longer so that doesn't interf. with the Flak!?:hmm:

Neither did I. So I made some flagpoles and attached them to the side rails of the Turm and users balked at it. So what to do? I'm not that familiar with WWII history or the subs so I was hoping someone would pipe up with a suggestion/and or solution. I can't appease everyone but if I can make it at least somewhat historically correct then I'll make it.

It's hard to tell here. Is that flagpole attached to the rail or is it anchored in the deck?

Ok racerboy your mod does work now after enabling it when in port. One question though. How can i turn of the second flag on the flagpole? I think 2 flags is a bit to much. I know it can be done but how?

Use TimeTraveller's Mini-Tweaker tool to open the supplied tweak file. Then go to Flag #2 enable and make that 0. That's all there is to it!

Maybe someone should tell him that he has to put the both txt-files into the Tweakfiles-folder of the SH3 Mini Tweaker. I had not understand the same until today.:oops:

I have a question, and it doesn't mean anything; I'm just curious: Do the pennants reflect actual sinkings, or are they just generic eye candy?

I'll use it either way, 'cause it's an amazing bit of work. I'm just curious.

There's no way to have the game update the TGA's used for the pennants and thus they are generic eye candy that is customizable by the user (same with the flags). Say you sink a ship worth 10500, you could edit pennant #1 to read 10500 and enable it and thus when you raise your pennants you see it flying. Best I could do with what is available.

Actually that's a pretty elegant solution! I personally will make sure all mine are round numbers (14000, 8000, 1000), as I understand that's how they did it.

One more question: I usually run multiple careers. If I have two different careers going is there any way to have each u-boat's score be separate?

Use TimeTraveller's Mini-Tweaker tool to open the supplied tweak file. Then go to Flag #2 enable and make that 0. That's all there is to it!

Maybe someone should tell him that he has to put the both txt-files into the Tweakfiles-folder of the SH3 Mini Tweaker. I had not understand the same until today.:oops:
In my opinion you should modify your readme about this point!!??:huh:

no problem. I'm not taking this any way other than informational purposes. The mod will come with two flags regardless. There's been many requests for two flags. The tweak file will allow those that don't want the second flag to turn it off. :yep:

Heres a simple instruction should those want only one flag.

It is the first time I use Mini-Tweaker.....and when I launched it it keept telling me "Unable to read/find SH3 registry key"??? :damn:
Odd cause I have installed mini-Tweaker on the same Drive as SH3!!!

You don't put the tweaked files anywhere. Ok, I guess a little dissertation on how Mini-tweaker works is needed.

The mini-tweaker tool is used to adjust values in files. You have to have a pre-made 'template' file that tells the Mini-Tweaker tool where to find the value and what type the value is. This is the tweak file. Also contained in this tweak file is the path to the file to be modified. Almost always this path location is a file in the \data tree of SH3. Now when you change values Mini-Tweaker automatically updates the values in the file for you. You don't have to do anything else. No files to move or copy, zip, nada, nothing. You do this by pressing the 'save new value' button. Pretty simple eh?
Now here comes the 'built in' safety. If you have enabled the mod you're tweaking via JSGME then you have a safety for changes that don't work. By disabling the mod and then re-enabling the mod any changes you had previously made with Mini-Tweaker are gone! This can be good and this can be bad. I would recommend keeping a log of all changes you make in case this happens to you.

I am really looking forward to the release of this mod, in particular for the type II (if its possible?) and for the type VII, both with animated penants.

Once I understood how to work the mini tweaker its very easy to choose how many flags and penants I wanted. I think its great to be able to have that choice.

I for one can wait and look forward to its final release when its ready.

I really hate to report this but this mod doesn't work properly with GWX 2.1!!!! I had it installed with GWX 2.0 and it worked then but I reinstalled it for 2.1 and got WHITE FLAGS instead!!!!!:damn: Can anyone find a way of fixing it so it would work? I'd like to have my flags back.

Are you sure about that? All of the screenshots I've posted where my flags are shown are indeed taken in GWX 2.0.

Guys the flags will work because its overwriting GWX 2.0 and 2.1 files.:yep: Problem is you break the GWX game. :nope: It will work but there is risk of CTD's. You do it at your own risk.:down:

For the exhaust I don't know if GWX team has changed the values from 2.0 to 2.1 val files. I'm going to ask them.

It work with gwx 2.0. And as I recol the RB put the flags in his mode. Maybe u forgat too put the flags. Depens on how u instal it. R u using jsmg or u put it menualy.

It may seem it works but it does break GWX 2.0. And at your own risk it will break GWX 2.1. There are not compatible. If you don't believe me iether wait for RB to update it or ask GWX team.

Once again you install the mods at your own risk.

I am not running anything else just version 1.4. I would love to get GWX but have dial up internet and no patience to download such huge files. I wold recomend theat u get Jonsons generic mod enebler and use it for r mod. And if not the flegs r in the same folder were the reste is. Whean u open rar file ther r 4 folders. In RB_7b_flags is the data folder. iN theat folder u have a 2 folders. 1 is Objects and 2 is Textures. Inside texturs is Tnormal/tex. In there is the flags texturs. IF u puting the files manuely just folow the order and u r good. And allways beckap u original fils. I hope i manige too help u.:hmm:

probly right about name ame adddress. I did get the flags working I remembered downloading a high res german flag mod awhile back that apparently was not compatible. I did a total unload and reload now they work great. Thanks for the support guys.:up:

GWX version RB is talking about is older than Version 2.0.

Racerboy never got around to finishing his mod for GWX 2.0.

So by default that means RB's Flag mod isn't compatible with GWX 3.0

You may use it but at your own risk. It may work but it really doesn't work properly even if you can't see it.

In the end of the day its your choice. Sometimes for a great mod like RB's flag mod its worth the risk? ;)
