Note: Originally this mod started since there was not one out there, I rolled-up my sleeves to make one for the USS Thresher, and with lot's of guidance from FooFighters' and Leovampire, It was a reality. I wanted to give something back to Subsim and offer my work files 'kit' to the forum, but alot of folks out there did not have photoshop.

* Need testers for the rest.

PLEASE PROVIDE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS:
1. Boatname, SS Number and Class
2. The year of your campaign; early or mid/late war conning tower.
3. The exact, current FooSkin you are using; FooFighters (weathered, Hvy Weathered, Black, etc.), please provide a link to your file.
4. Total number of kills for Warship, Merchant and Aircraft
5. Your current Tonnage ( be honest ;) )
6. Number of War Patrols Completed
7. A link to the 'Boat' Emblem, if available would be great

1. Download one of FooFighters Hi-res skins (Tambor Class, if another Class please let me know)

2. Locate and Copy your Boat's insignia into Photoshop ( or let me know your boat and I'll put one together for you )

3. Install the Photoshop DDS extensions: NVIDIA_Texture_Tools_0.94.0716.1555.exe

4. Open the T01 and T02 Conning tower .dds textures in Photoshop

5. Use the included USS Thresher Tambor T01 and T02 .dds skins as a guide to locate the proper insignia and kill flag location on your boat. (Tambor class)

6. Open USN_Kill_Flag_Kit in photoshop (use Marquee tool and copy/paste on your boat .psd file)

7. Update manually via Photoshop, save as .dds file (DXT5 ARGB 8bpp | interpolated alpha)

8. Place in SH4/Mods folder overwriting the original T01 or T02,

9. Then use JSGME

A big thanks to FooFighters for all his help and wonderful hi-res Tambor skin and thanks to Captain Cox for the original Thresher skin idea.

I'm working on this now, but it appears to be a manual, Paint Shop only, copy/paste Endeavour.

Questions:

I was reading something about this the other day in the Osprey 'New Vanguard' book on US subs. It showed a picture of USS Harder's battle flag as made by the crew. It was adorned with Japanese flags denoting kills similar to the pictures above (IJN flags for warships ordinary flags for merchants).

For damaged ships it displayed a flag with a line running down the middle kinda like a crack through the flag.

There were various other bits and bobs, a star for each war patrol and a USN aircraft star with a number in it representing how many downed air crew Harder had rescued (was only one at that point).

Unfortunately I didn't see any info on emblems for shot down aircraft. I suppose in RL 99% of the time a boat would crash dive rather than engage an aircraft so the number of downed aircraft among the whole sub fleet would probably have been very small indeed.

I very much appreciate it. It seems in SH4, downing aircraft are higher then in RL. Doing the research now, but the battle flags above should work nicely for the majority of 'kill emblems' to be placed on the conning tower after each war patrol.

Right now it appears to be manual, but should not take that long to add at the end of each war patrol.

I also need to make a 'kill flag' for each class.

I'll create one for the S-class, are you using FooFighters skins?

What is your current boat's name?

How many Warship, Merchant and Aircraft kills do you have?

KILL FLAGS TUTORIAL with BUZZINBILL

What You will Need:
a. Photoshop CS
b. Nvidia Photoshop Plugin
c. Kill Flags Kit
d. Boat Skin (FooFighters' are best)
e. Boat Emblem

I. TO YOUR BOATS!

Ok, here's the start that we will work with for SS310:

III. Cleaning-up the Boat's Emblem


1. We'll use this patch:

2. And open Photoshop or Fireworks, etc ( both are available from Adobe, fully functional as a 30 day trial )

3. Now use the magic wand tool and eraser to cleanup all the areas around the emblem

4. Zooooom way in to the pixel level to clean-up the (light blue) edges and details, in this case.

5. Now save the background as transparent, enable autocolors, sharpen and add a drop shadow and we get this result:

It's in png format (from Fireworks) and can be opened in Photoshop with the transparent background
Next we'll open the T01 texture layer for your conning tower.

IV. Extract one of FooFighters Balao skins to a temp directory, et al.
Navigate to the /tex/T02.dds file ( this is the late war conning tower / early war it T01.dds)
(with Photoshop and the Nvidia dds plugin installed)
Now double-click on the T02.dds file
[Photoshop will open]

V. Photoshop

1. Our Texture file will open.
(still in Photoshop; Click open Navigate to the Batfish logo.png - in your temp folder) and Double-click.

2. Our skin is the "SHIV Balao Hi-Res RED FIN and REDFIN SHARK MOUTH ONLY weathered Submarine by FooFighters and Boris. Graphics by CAPTAIN COX" here's the link http://files.filefront.com/HI_RES_REDFIN_SHARK_MOUTHrar/;7544484;/fileinfo.htmlisthe it says balao but also says gato , guessing they are interchangable. We are using the sharkmouth only one which Buzzinbill has mildly modified (he gave it red eyes)

3. Open the T02 skin in Temp\HI RES RED FIN BALA SHARK MOUTH ONLY\HI RES RED FIN BALA SHARK MOUTH ONLY\Hi-reskin\Data\Textures\Tnormal\tex\NSS_subclassTower _T02.dds
(Buzzinbill's career is March 26 1945

Next-up: Buzzinbill, please tally-up your kills; warships (note the # of CV's and BB's) and all others. The # of War Patrols completed, # AC shot down, and any Lifegaurd rescues. Also total tonnage from the office. (any assult landings too - need to make an icon for those )

i am using the defult skin i am using the early war conning tower i have done 3 patrols i have shot down 1 plane and sunk 2 merchant ships of with a total tonnage of 7052 tons the boat name is Uss Grenadier it is a Gar class sub it has no number i have looked for it but i cant find it so plz help me

Thanks:rock: The only small problem i had was that i couldnt marquee and move the flag from the kit becouse it was in psd so i changed it to a dds dxt1 version and i could then move it . I worked it out that i have to right click on each flag first in psd format , then i can move them . cheers .

Hate those HD crashes, glad to hear you did not lose any data, wasn't so lucky when it happend to me. Look'n forward to your kit for my S boat. As per my Email, started new Career out of Manila with my S boat, shot down 2 Betty's and a zero, sank a heavy cruiser and 2 lite cruisers and a single DD in a task force, outta fish heading for home :arrgh!:

I have this idea :hmm: in the back of my head (dangerous place, that is!) that there should be a way to automate all of this. If I knew how to modify graphics files within a programming language, it would be a fairly easy task to write a program to create all of this stuff automatically given the basic backgrounds (kill flag, commissioning plate, etc.). Does anyone have any experience at modifying graphics file programmatically? Or am I insane for even considering a task like this? :rotfl: Just a thought (I have them sometimes and on rare occasions they are worthwhile:p )

Well if you havnt got Photoshop cs then its up to forum people who want to do it for you . Basically i would envisage you putting in a request to update your flags at the end of a patrol . For example i could photoshop the extra flags onto your subs skin and send it back to you via rapidshare for you too apply via JSGME . I could be wrong .
