View Full Version : [PROB] Walking the deck problem continues.

Hi People,
Just wondering if you had the same problems as I do.
Walking the deck is great, but I no longer can use the arrow keys for the deck gun elev. or scroll the map.
I have used the original command.cfg and carefully made the changes to "Open all torps" and "Walk the deck" mods.
Before these changes, everything is ok, but after these changes I lose elevation of the deck gun with the arrow keys and also the scroll map feature.
How about anyone that made the "walk the deck" mod? Are you having this problem?
Need help!
that's strange... I've tinkered with the camera file myself and made a "walking the deck mod" adjusted for my personal tastes and my command.cfg hasn't been altered in any way... i'll try using the arrow keys for the purposes you mentioned in a few minutes but i don't see how their function could have been changed by the modifications i made.
unless that other mod uses a completely different approach or does something else i'm not aware of...
i can upload my mod for you to use if you want to, but you'll have to tell me which other modifications your are using since there are few others that modify the camera.dat. i built it upon the one provided by TM1.6 but it shouldn't be too hard to make the same modifications to another version.

I have no mods using camera.dat. (if you, do send send me the link as I have had problems clicking a link ...won't get me there.
Yes, if you could upload your mod for me that would be a good starting place.
Thanks for looking into this...it's been driving me crazy. :damn: :damn: :damn:

edit: stupid me - somehow i overread you said you're not using any modified camera.dat :oops:
anyways - i'm currently trying to make that "walking-the-deck-cam" feel more organic meaning have it sway slightly so you're really feeling like your're watching out of someones eyes standing on the ship instead of the feeling you get by having the camera tightly fixed at some point around the ship. this might not be everyones taste since i mainly started doing this for myself although if others finds this worth a look i'll gladly share :)
btw. i just checked. i can still use all my keys as before... dunno how that mod you're trying to use works but for me the keys stay the same.

Can you upload anything for me to try?
Can there be any mod that could cause this? Weird....

Try using a stock commands.cfg and see if the arrow key functionality comes back. If it does, then some change to commands.cfg has caused the problem. I'm betting that's the case.
sure. here: http://files.filefront.com/Cameramod+alpha+testzip/;8448381;/fileinfo.html
be aware that this is only for test purposes. it's not finished in any way and no documentation is included.
now did you say the problem occurs once you install the "walking-the-decks-mod" or has it been there even if you uninstalled it? if the second is the case, i suspect there's something wrong in your sh4 install and my dat file won't help you.

Well originally, I made changes to the command.chg then modified it with "walking the deck" and the problem occured.
I removed the mod and every thing worked as it should but when I re-installed the mod and the problems started again.

I have used the original command.cfg and carefully made the changes to "Open all torps" and "Walk the deck" mods.
Unless we're talking about a walk the decks mod other than Sergbuto's, there weren't any changes to commands.cfg for walking the deck, only the camera.dat change.

Goes without saying, make a backup of Commands.cfg before you do this!
This completely fixed the problem of the camera rotating when moving, on my system. I can now move forward/back/left/right and the camera doesn't rotate at all.
OK, the problem of the "jerky" mouse views I fixed by editing Cameras.dat. I used skwasjer's awesome Silent 3ditor for this. Maybe you could also use SH3 MiniTweaker, I didn't try so I can't say...
Naturally, back up your Cameras.dat before you start!
Run Silent 3ditor and load C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Library\Cameras.dat.
Open the node "_Dummy_Cam_ConningDeck", then open "FreeMove" under that node. Click "Properties". In the right-hand pane, expand the "FreeMove" branch if it's not already expanded.
You want to change 3 values. The original values are:
RotationSpeed=120 mine was 60
RotationInertia=0.05 mine was 0.2
RotationRun=2
Change all 3 of these values to 0:
RotationSpeed=0
RotationInertia=0
RotationRun=0

RotationInertia=0.05 mine was 0.2

huh??? i've been messing with EXACTLY those values before. nothing to do with jerkyness here though. it just does what it says in my experience:
Rotationspeed = how fast can you turn?
Rotationinertia = the higher that value the more inertia plays a part in the speed of the rotation i.e. no instant acceleration but a smoother movement
rotationrun = by how much gets rotationspeed multiplied when you press the "run" key (shift here)
and those keys? i have no idea why they are recommended to be changed. i simply press the mouse as if i wanted to look around but instead of rotating the view the arrow keys automatically initiate movement.

Ok, I understand now. I never had the rotating camera problem with the mod, so I never had to do anything to commands.cfg.

Joe, looks like you're quoting a post I made a few weeks ago regarding Sergbuto's mod that allows walking the deck of your sub. Those command.cfg changes are not part of Sergbuto's mod, it's something I came up with to fix a prob I was having where using the cursor keys to move around the deck also caused the view to pitch up/down/left/right.
What I posted does break a few things involving cursor keys and scrolling the map is one of them. I never used cursor keys for that, only mouse. Also I never used cursor keys for deck gun elevation, again only used mouse. So I didn't notice something was broken until someone pointed out to me the prob with scrolling the map.
It is quite possible that deck gun elevation/rotation was bound to cursor keys as well, if so then my changes you quoted will break that also. Never tried it so I don't know ;)
What I do know is, after making changes to commands.cfg that I gave, you can scroll the map using KP2, KP4, KP6 and KP8. If deck gun elevation was originally bound to cursor up/down, you should be able to use KP2/KP8 with my changes, to do the same thing.

did you or anyone else ever find out what caused you (and maybe others) to encounter this while others didn't?

I do remember now.... yes I had the up-down problem....jerkyness.
The scrool keys only work left and right ..not all directions.
The gun elevation will not work with arrow or keypad keys.
You mentioned that you only use the mouse for "gun elevation". How?

l3th4l,
I had asked another member if they had the problem about the scrolling and gun elevation, but they never got back to me.
I hope you did not think that your mod caused the problem.
There were several of us that had the initial problem of jerkyness and arrow keys going straight up etc.
That's when I got the code for the command.cfg.
Mystifies me why some have this problem but not everyone.
Is there a way to map the gun elevation to different keys? :huh:

OK, just tried it out and the keypad keys won't control elevation. They will control left-right though. And now, on the map the KP2/KP8 won't scroll the map up and down, though KP4/KP6 still scroll it left and right. I'm sure that ALL the KP keys would scroll the map before, up, down, left, right :hmm: Strange, I've put a few more mods on recently, maybe one of 'em did something???
As far as gun elevation with mouse, just go to gun and left-click so cursor disappears, then you can rotate the gun with left/right mouse movement, and increase/decrease elevation by moving mouse forward/back. At least that's how it's always worked on my system ;)

like I am it might create a problem! I am using one that brings a lot of the SHIII keyboard functions back into play and that causes a couple of problems with some camera mod's. If that helps anyone out.

did you or anyone else ever find out what caused you (and maybe others) to encounter this while others didn't?
I don't have a clue why some get it and some don't.
What I know is this, I had the problem of the view being rotated left/right and pitched up/down at the same time as using cursor keys to move around the deck.
I experimented, uninstalled the mod to see what the cursor keys did on the conning tower view without the mod. Well they rotated the view left/right without moving the camera, and pitched the view up/down without moving the camera.
It seemed to me that Sergbuto's mod was retaining this "rotational" aspect of the cursor keys, in addition to causing the cursor keys to "move" the camera around.
It was possible to counter the rotation by moving the mouse forward/back when using the up/down arrow keys, or moving mouse left/right when using the left/right keys. But that was driving me bat-sh*t so I tried re-mapping in commands.cfg as mentioned above. That fixed the problem 100% for me.
Why everyone doesn't get that same effect I don't know. Unless there are 2 versions of the mod, and some of us got the "bugged" one and later ones got a "fixed" one? All I know is I had the problem mentioned, and the changes I made in commands.cfg fixed it for me, so arrow keys would only move the camera without rotating the view.
As far as Cameras.dat, whenever I would use the mouse to look around it was shaky/jittery as crap. When I made the changes mentioned it was smooth as silk. Again, I don't know why some would experience a prob and others don't.
I'm not a modder, and I don't understand these things. All I know is that I'm hard-headed and if I have even a clue where to start, I'll beat my head against a wall repeatedly trying to fix a problem. And the mods I made to Cameras.dat cured the "shakes" 100% for me. Don't have any idea why others never had the "shakes" to begin with...

really strange. if you have any time on your hands in the next few days would you care to help me nail down the problem? i was gonna release a camera mod some time in the future but it would be great if i was able to fix that problem before so people don't have to go and start messing with their command.cfg files.

Which prob are you referring to, the one where the camera rotates at the same time as you're moving around with arrow keys?
Well if so I finally figured that one out! I restored Sergbuto's original Cameras.dat and undid all the changes I'd made to the arrow key mappings in Commands.cfg and started messing around with Cameras.dat to see if I could figure it out.
Well nothing I did made any difference at all :( No matter what, the camera still rotated when using the arrow keys.
Then I saw the problem - it was my own stupid damn fault. There was a "Copy of Cameras.dat" in my Data\Library folder, apparently I'd been messing with MiniTweaker back in June and forgot to delete it... :damn::damn::damn:
Soon as I deleted that, Sergbuto's mod worked perfect, without any changes to Commands.cfg. No camera rotation at all when using arrow keys :D The mouse rotation is still a bit jerky (the "shakes" are back but not nearly as bad as before) but I think that can be toned down some by tweaking RotationSpeed, RotationInertia and RotationRun a bit.
Anyway, anybody that's having the problem with arrow keys rotating camera as well as moving it should check for a "Copy of Cameras.dat" and delete it.
Don't know why, but SH4 apparently looks for any file with "Cameras.dat" in the name, and combines whatever it finds in both. So it read Sergbuto's Cameras.dat and set up all the freemove params, then read "Copy of Cameras.dat" and set up the two "AxisRotation" entries (which control rotation about the x/y axes) that Sergbuto had deleted from his Cameras.dat.
So the probs I was having were all my fault thru carelessness! Like I said, I'm not a modder ;)

thats good to know, thanks. tbh that might have been the cause of some of the problems i was experiencing while testing, i'll check in a few hours :)
don't know if the part about the axisrotation entries is true, though. i've left them untouched in my version and it works just fine... may have something to do with the order the different nodes are in, though.

l3th4l, had you applied the changes to Commands.cfg I listed? If so did you remember to remove them before testing? If you did use those changes and they are still in place, then the cursor keys will not cause camera rotation on the conning deck no matter what you do.
I've restored all the cursor key code in Commands.cfg, restored Sergbuto's original Cameras.dat and after getting rid of the "Copy of Cameras.dat" everything works perfect.
And I can guarantee you that the two AxisRotation entries do control camera rotation on the conning deck camera when using cursor keys - just tried it, I restored both those entries to Sergbuto's Cameras.dat (used Silent 3ditor to export from original .dat then import to Sergbuto's .dat) and guess what, the camera rotation when using cursor keys was back just like before. Deleted both entries, and the cursor keys then do forward/back/left/right movement only, no rotation of camera.
So all the confusion was my fault, I found changes that "fixed" the problem and posted them, instead of finding the root cause of the problem (which was entirely my stupid mistake by having a copy of Cameras.dat!) to begin with. My apologies to all :oops:

Glad it worked! You might want to "undo" the changes to Commands.cfg, as mentioned here and other places the changes I listed break some other useful keyboard functions. I never noticed it when I did those changes, I use 99.9% voice/mouse control, only thing I use keyboard for is to move the external cam.
There are several warnings about "copies" causing problems in some of the MiniTweaker threads - such as warning you to delete "Copy of <Cool Mod>.dat" after tweaking and before installing. Somehow I had got a "Copy" long before installing Sergbuto's mod and totally forgot about it and that was causing 100% of the problem...
Being basically stupid, I never realized that SH4 would "merge" the contents of a "copy" with the actual file :oops: I always understood that warning to mean that if a copy existed, the mod either wouldn't install, or would install but not work at all! But in this case the mod DID work, it just didn't work RIGHT.
So it's my fault, I apologize to all for any confusion or inconvenience I've caused :roll:

I haven't installed Kriller's mod but I just D/L and looked at it. Looks like there are 2 different mods in it, Kriller's and also Sergbuto's "Walk the Decks" mod.
Kriller's mod has a modded Cameras.dat in it, Sergbuto's does also. Not sure what Kriller has done in his Cameras.dat but if you install Sergbuto's 1st, then install Kriller's (using JSGME) then Sergbuto's mod gets overwritten and you won't be able to walk the deck anymore. The readme says:
Run the program "JSGME.exe" and choose which mod you want to install, by clicking in the left window under "available mods", then press enable to install the "Krillers visiual upgrade install". After that you can install a camera mod which let you walk around on the u-boat, by enabling the "SB_13PersonViewCameras_Mod_v1" on top of mine saying yes to owerwrite cameras.dat, warning this is his first release so there are maybe some bugs in it..
So if you installed Sergbuto's part then installed Kriller's part (or installed Kriller's part only) that will definately break being able to walk around the deck. If you install Kriller's portion, then install Sergbuto's, it should work fine (as long as you don't have any more "Copies of Cameras.dat" hanging around...)
If you've already been thru all that and it still don't work, I don't have a clue :huh:
